Rockland County, NY - A mother and her three children were seriously injured in a car crash that will leave a main Monsey thoroughfare closed to thru traffic till approximately 9 PM.

The accident took place near the intersection of Route 59 and Robert Pitt Drive across from the Town Square shopping center.

Sergeant Brian Corbett of the Ramapo Police Department said that the crash took place at approximately 3 PM when a silver Toyota Corolla traveling westbound on Route 59 hit the 36 year old woman, her two daughters, ages thirteen and eight, and her three month old baby boy, who was in a stroller.

The male driver of the Toyota, the only occupant of the car, was uninjured.

Corbett said that the family was walking along the side of the state roadway, which has no sidewalks in that area, when they were struck. Early reports that the group had been crossing Route 59 were incorrect, said Corbett.

All four victims were seriously injured and transported to Westchester Medical Center.  According to NBC reports (http://bit.ly/2teVtAT),  the baby suffered cardiac arrest and her sister sustained traumatic injuries, with first responders performing CPR on the older girl.

Multiple ambulances were called to the accident site.

The Toyota, with its shattered windshield, remains at the accident scene, along with a second vehicle, a white livery car belonging to Motty’s Car Service. It is unclear if it was involved in the accident.

An overturned stroller was also visible at the scene for a short time as police continued their investigation.

Corbett declined to give any information about the driver of the vehicle, or any contributing factors to the accident as police continue their investigation.

County Legislator Aron Wieder identified the victims as members of the Braun family, residents of Monsey.

Wieder described the accident as “a tragedy waiting in the making,” blasting the state for not responding to repeated requests for sidewalks in the area to accommodate the many area residents who walk to nearby shopping centers.

“The state has come into Ramapo to criticize everything under the sun, yet the one thing, the one road where they are responsible, Route 59,  a state road, they are nowhere to be found,”  Wieder told VIN News.

Route 59 is completely shut down between Robert Pitt Drive and the Monsey Park and Ride and is expected to remain closed to thru traffic between Kennedy Drive and Route 306 for several hours as the investigation continues.
