Mother 'shut car door' to teach children 'lesson'.

A 24-year-old Fort Worth mother has been arrested on suspicion of two counts of injury to a child after her two young children were found dead in a hot car, the Stinson Hunter reports.

Cynthia Randolph was arrested on Friday following an investigation into the deaths of her 16-month-old son and 2-year-old daughter found they had died from extreme heat exposure in a locked overheating vehicle.

Authorities report that both toddlers were trapped inside a hot car that was parked on the driveway of their home outside of Fort Worth after their mother "shut the car door" to teach them a lesson.

Court documents released Friday revealed the Parker County Sheriff's Department used Randolph's alleged shifting statements about how the children died as probable cause to charge her, NBC News reports.

Randolph told officers she had been folding laundry in the house while her children played outside before she discovered them trapped in the vehicle after going out to check on them. When she was arrested Friday, police said she admitted to locking the children inside the car on purpose.

"When they refused to leave the car, the defendant said she shut the door to teach Juliet a lesson, thinking she could get herself and her brother out of the car when ready," authorities said in a statement.

The statement added that Randolph had since told officers that she went inside the home, smoked marijuana, and fell asleep for several hours before waking to find the toddlers in the car and unresponsive.

Randolph is facing two first-degree felony counts of injury to a child causing serious bodily injury.
