Three people were killed and nine others were injured, two critically, after at least six vehicles collided in a chain-reaction crash on the Long Island Expressway Wednesday morning, police and witnesses said.

A large dump truck apparently struck two other vehicles around 4:20 a.m. in Maspeth, Queens. At least three other vehicles then slammed into the vehicles involved in the first crash, witnesses said.

"I heard a bam and then another bam," one man said. I ran outside, and as I ran outside I hear cars breaking and I hear cars crashing."

Three people were pronounced dead at the scene. Nine other people were injured. Two of them were critically injured and two more were in serious but stable condition. The other five people suffered minor injuries

One of the critically injured victims was in cardiac arrest. She was taken to Elmhurst Hospital, as was the other person who was critically injured.

A silver sedan that was being taken away in a flatbed was severely damaged, as was a dark Hyundai Santa Fe, which was also taken away in a flatbed truck. A dark Toyota Camry was also involved in the crash, along with a yellow taxi cab and another vehicle.

All eastbound, lower-level lanes of the LIE were closed between the 48th Street and Maurice Avenue exits as of 6:30 a.m. Traffic was being diverted to a service road. The accident also closed BQE ramps to the LIE.

Traffic wasn't significantly affected by the closures, although rubbernecker delays were beginning to build in the westbound lanes.

Commuters heading to the city from Manhattan weren't even sure why the traffic was backed up. Some people got out of their cars to try to get a better look, photos on social media show.
