Brooklyn, NY - City investigators say a “defect” in a building’s elevator was a contributing factor in the death of a Brooklyn man earlier this month.

37 year-old Israeli immigrant Eran Modan was crushed on October 2 while he was trying to escape from a stalled elevator in a building located on Hope Street near Union Avenue in Williamsburg.

NY1.com reports that following an investigation, the city’s Building Commissioner stated that the particular type of elevator system in use in the building contains a defect that may prove potentially dangerous in any of the approximately 100 city buildings currently using the same system.

The Building Department has mandated that the owners and operators of the elevator system have the equipment evaluated by licensed inspectors and report all findings to the city.

In the meantime, comparable systems must either be shut down or operated manually until inspections are completed.
