Baltimore, MD - Feb. 22, 2017 -  Traditionally, the girls in Bais Yaakov learn to read over the first six months in first grade and receive their siddurim on a Sunday in February. This is followed by ongoing instruction in the different parts of the Siddur as well as an exciting program to encourage girls to practice their skills by reading all of Sefer Tehillim. This event is held on Sunday morning in conjunction with the Middle School Bas Mitzvah dinner which begins in the late afternoon. These two festive programs draw many grandparents from out of town who come for Shabbos and have an opportunity to enjoy their families over the weekend.

The Siddur Play is a compendium of songs staged by our first graders as a group with individual lines for each child. It provides an opportunity for each child to shine in front of her peers, parents and family members. Moreover, they receive their beautiful siddurim and enjoy refreshments after the play is concluded.

Four years ago, Rabbi Mendel Freedman, Bais Yaakov’s recently retired elementary principal, began video conferencing the school siddur play live. This technological tool has enabled numerous family members from all over the world to enjoy this most special moment. This year, on Sunday morning, February 19, we had close to 400 virtual attendees besides for the 500 people who were physically present in the school auditorium to honor these first graders.

This is one of the comments that we received from grandparents living in Eretz Yisrael who attended their granddaughter’s Siddur play via videoconferencing this past Sunday morning.

Dear Bais Yaakov of Baltimore,

We have just finished participating in the siddur party of our granddaughter, Chayah. Boruch Hashem, we have very many Einiklech all around the world and not being able to travel, we naturally miss out on many special milestones and enjoy our Nachas from the parents’ reports that follow.

This evening, (morning in Baltimore), is the first time we have been able to be a part of it as it was happening - such an extra special nachas for us. Organizing this was surely no easy job and we have tremendous Hakoras Hatov to Bais Yaakov and all the work you put into it.  From our connections with Baltimore, we greatly appreciated the words of Rabbi Sanders that Baltimore is a city of Achdus - he could not have said anything truer. For everyone who lives there, they are greatly privileged.

May HKB"H bentsch you to grow M'chayil El Chayil in raising our future Imahos b'Yisroel.

The Bais Yaakov Siddur Play is sponsored by Dr. and Mrs. Marcel Reischer in memory of Mrs. Eva Reischer, חוה בת יצחק מנדל ע"ה. She was a woman who treasured Tefilah and valued the role her siddur played in her life. Every student receives a siddur with an inscription describing Mrs. Eva Reischer’s unique personality. May her Neshama be uplifted through the Kiddush Hashem of the actual Siddur Play as well as all the Tefillos which are expressed daily by our entire student body using the donated siddurim. Each year, Dr. Reischer joins all the girls and their families for this program and serves as an inspiration and role model for helping shape the quality of prayer in our community.

We recognize the planning, practice and attention to detail which all seven Moros, their assistants, music teacher and support staff invested in making this moment such a memorable one. Their caring for the students is both genuine and palpable.

We also express special kudos to Mr. Tzvi Wygoda and Mr. Avraham Klugman for making the video conference a reality year after year even though it is a significant effort of time and labor. May Hashem grant us that all of Klal Yisrael’s Tefilos be heartfelt and that they be answered for good!
