Baltimore, MD – Dec. 29, 2016 - On the evening of December 28, 2016, the joyous sounds of the Ner Yisrael band filled the dining hall at the Yeshiva. The entire Mechina, of 240 bochurim, enthusiastically gathered for their annual Chanukah Mesiba. The room was beautifully set to celebrate the fifth night of Chanukah and the simcha could be felt in the air.

Adding to the evening’s festivities was the overwhelmingly warm welcome the bochurim gave to the 5th District’s new Baltimore City Councilman Isaac “Yitzy” Schleifer. It was clear that the bochurim were excited to see the new Councilman, who is the first Orthodox Councilman the City has had in over 50 years.

When asked what the evening meant to him, Councilman Schleifer responded, “I am overwhelmed and appreciative of the reception the Ner Yisrael bochurim gave me. These amazing students are the true lights of Chanukah that represent the continuity of the Jewish people, which is the real theme of holiday. It is obvious how well a job the hanhala does with their student body as they prepare them for the future.”

Nathan Willner, President of the Cheswolde Neighborhood Association, who accompanied the Councilman to the event remarked, “It is no wonder that Ner Yisrael is one of the preeminent Yeshivas in the country. The refined demeanor of its bochurim and their simchas hachayim could be seen radiating on their faces. This type of joy and pride can only be felt at a yeshiva like Ner Yisrael. Baltimore is so fortunate to have such a prestigious institution in its midst.”
