Baltimore, MD - Nov. 27, 2016 - The tragic evening of November 9-10, 1938, known as Kristallnacht (the Night of the Broken Glass), foreshadowed what would prove to be the most devastating blow to the Jewish people since the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash. A harbinger of the tremendous destruction to come, Kristallnacht symbolized the beginning of the Holocaust.

Sixty-four years ago, Rav Yitzchok Sternhell, zt"l, and a handful of other Holocaust survivors who were bravely trying to rebuild their lives, families, and Yiddishkeit, founded Yeshivas Kochav Yitzchok /Torah Institute of Baltimore. Certain that founding a cheder in which their sons would receive a Torah education was an essential part of this rebuilding process, they named the school, Shearis Hapleita, meaning the survivors of the destruction.

The cheder, since renamed Yeshivas Kochav Yitzchok in Rav Sternhell's memory, sensitively teaches their talmidim to remember the European Churbon and appreciate what we lost. As part of this effort, the middle school holds an annual commemoration of Kristallnacht. The program was launched through a generous partnership with Mrs. Marlene Resnick and her late husband, Stanley a"h, who felt that it was most appropriate for a cheder founded by Holocuast survivors to teach their talmidim to reflect upon the Churbon.

This year's guest lecturer was HaRav Sheftel Neuberger, shlita, Menahel of Yeshivas Ner Yisroel. He recounted the Mirrer yeshiva’s miraculous escape to Shanghai, as told to him by his late rebbi, Rav Dovid Kronglass zt”l, the Mashgiach of Ner Yisrael, who was a talmid of the Mir at that time.

Rav Neuberger focused on the concept of Hashgacha Pratis. Quoting a survivor, he told the middle school talmidim: “You can clearly see the yad Hashem when well-thought out plans to flee dangerous countries were unsuccessful, while seemingly unlikely plans worked out.” The talmidim, enthralled by the miraculous story of survival, readily absorbed Rav Neuberger's message.

YKI/TI is proud that its talmidim continue to use the Kristallnacht program to learn vital and inspirational lessons of emunah and hashgacha pratis, and expresses its deep gratitude to the Resnicks for enabling this special program which emphasizes these invaluable principles.
