Information from an alert citizen led to the arrest of five juveniles in connection with theft from a vehicle on October 20.

Just after 3:30 a.m. on October 20, police responded to the area of the 6500 block of Copperfield Road 21208 after a citizen reported seeing people trying to get into vehicles in the area. When officers arrived in the area, they observed a group of juveniles walking along Wickfield Road. One of the juveniles matched a description given on the call. Another juvenile in the group was observed pulling a car door handle and then walking away when the door did not open.

The juveniles ran when police approached them.

All five of the juveniles (three 17-year-old males, one 15-year-old male, and one 16-year-old female) were taken into custody. Searches incident to the arrests revealed miscellaneous coins on the juveniles. In addition, one of the juveniles had gloves and a hat with him. Officers reported the temperature at the time was 63 degrees.

Officers found two vehicles in the 6500 block of Copperfield Road that had been ransacked. Nothing was taken from one of the vehicles. Money was taken from the other vehicle.

One of the juveniles told police that they had come to the area to steal a car. They heard that Pikesville is an easy place to steal a car because the residents leave their car doors unlocked and leave the keys in the car.

All five of the juveniles were charged as juveniles with theft. Four of the juveniles were released to their parents. The fifth juvenile was released to the Baltimore County Sheriff’s Office.

The Baltimore County Police Department recommends to the following to help keep your property safe and secure.

  • Always roll up the windows and lock the doors to your vehicle when you are going to be away from it.
  • Never keep keys to a vehicle in the vehicle.
  • Never keep money or other valuables in a vehicle.

Also report suspicious persons, vehicles, or conditions to police immediately. Do not be afraid to call 911. It was an alert citizen reporting suspicious activity to police that led to the clearance of these cases.
