Baltimore, MD – Nov. 13, 2016 - Yocheved Roth ended up being a table captain for the Challah Bake the very last minute for one of the two National Council of Synagogue Youth (NCSY) tables, so she was pushed up to the front of the hall—close to the stage--where the event took place. She and her daughters, Michal, 15, and Ayelet, 10, took special notice of the seven U.S. Naval Academy midshipmen, who also came to participate in the Challah Bake, as they were called up to the stage.

“We happened to have just toured the Naval Academy over Chol HaMoed Sukkot, with my kids, parents, and my brother’s four children,” relates Yocheved. “All nine kids, from ages 15 down to 5, enjoyed it so, so much and loved it. As the midshipmen were coming down from the stage, I turned to Michal and Ayelet and said, ‘Let’s go over to tell them how much we enjoyed going to their Naval Academy and welcome them to the Challah Bake.’ We went over to them when they came off the stage and while we were waiting for our turn to talk to them, Michal said to me, ‘Mom, see the one on the end? I have a picture of her on my IPod! Remember when they were lining up to practice for the parade? She was standing in the group next to us and she was laughing and I took a picture of her group’ (Mind you, there are 4000 midshipmen at the Naval Academy; they were lining up in groups of fifty.)

“Michal takes out her iPod, finds the picture and zooms in,” continues Yocheved. “To me, they all look the same—because they are wearing the same uniform, their hair is pulled back, they are wearing hats. ‘I said, okay, we’ll ask her.’ So, we go up to them and introduce ourselves, welcomed them and told them about our recent tour at the Naval Academy that we went on over Sukkot when they were practicing for their parade, and how we enjoyed it immensely.’ The girl who we thought was in the picture, Miriam, said, ‘I remember you!  You came on Wednesday when we were practicing for the Friday night parade and I was just telling someone the story how there was a Jewish family touring the Academy that day.’ Michal took out her IPod and I told Miriam, ‘We think we have a picture of you.’

When Michal showed it to her, Miriam started laughing and said, ‘That’s me; that’s a picture of me!’ It was shocking. There were 4000 midshipmen at the Naval Academy lining up for a parade, 3500 people at the Challah Bake, and we met her.

Yocheved extended a warm invite to Miriam to come to her house for Shabbos, however, since they are sophomores at the Naval Academy, they are not allowed off base, Friday night. The amazed women exchanged numbers so they can keep in touch. Yocheved texted Miriam before the Shabbos Project Shabbat to wish her a good Shabbos.

“I would like to keep in touch,” Yocheved told me. “My kids were blown away by this!”
