Weis Markets on Tuesday announced plans to convert 38 purchased Food Lion locations in the mid-Atlantic to Weis Markets stores.

The chain has completed its purchase of the Food Lion locations, and officials said in a statement they should all be converted by the end of October. Food Lion sold the locations as a condition of its owner Delhaize's merger with Ahold, whose holdings include Giant Food, Martin's and the grocery delivery service Peapod.

“Once the conversions are completed over the next two months, we will have nearly doubled our Maryland store count and expanded into Virginia and Delaware,” Weis COO Kurt Schertle said in a statement. “Our goal is to build on our advantages as a locally focused retailer that offers a strong combination of quality, value and service. As part of this commitment, we plan to expand variety in every department.”

Earlier this year, Weis bought several Baltimore County locations of Mars Super Markets as that chain went out of business. Weis plans to keep more than 2,000 current employees of the Food Lion locations it's buying, Schertle said.

This week, Weis is converting Food Lion stores in Cumberland, Frostburg, Owings Mills, Eldersburg and Reisterstown. Those will reopen Friday. Then next week, they'll work on stores in Columbia, Elkridge, Mitchellville and two in Gaithersburg, with all set to reopen the following Friday.
