(July 15, 2016) – Continuing to improve the ride quality for motorists in Baltimore County, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) recently started two resurfacing projects on I-795 and I-83.  The two projects will be complete by fall, weather permitting.

The first project is on the heels of one being completed in the Hunt Valley/Hereford area on I-83 (Baltimore-Harrisburg Expressway) between Dairy Road and MD 45 (York Road). Work is ready to start on the one-mile project in Parkton.  SHA will patch, grind, pave and restripe this one mile section of I-83, which has an average daily traffic volume of 51,000 daily, much of which is truck traffic.  This section of I-83 was last resurfaced in 1999.

SHA will then move contractor crews to I-795 between Franklin Boulevard and MD 140 (Westminster Pike) in Owings Mills/Glyndon. This 2.4 mile section of highway was last resurfaced in 1991.  Approximately 56,000 vehicles travel on this section of I-795 each day.

The $9.5 million project is part of an area wide contract that includes I-95 between the Baltimore City line and I-695 in the southwest corner. That part of the contract will begin later this fall.

SHA’s contractor, P. Flanigan and Sons, Inc. of Baltimore, are permitted to block a single lane during construction between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m., Sundays through Fridays.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.

A complete listing of current SHA projects is included in e-Road Ready 2016, the online brochure. Maryland drivers can also know before they go by calling 511 or visiting www.md511.org for live traffic updates, including construction delays and lane closures.
