Baltimore, MD – June 1, 2016 - When food packages were being put together to feed the needy on a back porch at the Brull home almost 39 years ago, Reb Elozer Isbee, ZT’L, and his cousin Rabbi Avrahom Kowalsky were looking for a cause to be a memorial for their Grandfather Rabbi Chaim Nachman Kowalsky, ZT’L.

The Brull’s and the Isbee’s joined ranks and started a Tomchei Shabbos called The Rabbi Chaim Nachman Kowalsky Memorial Ahavas Yisrael Charity Fund. After operating for a year, the founders - a Rebbe and an attorney - decided they could use some business expertise. They wanted a business person to join them to grow the tzedaka to meet community needs.

I was extremely fortunate to be that business person. We were joined by 20 board members and a wonderful staff, all volunteer, and we were Baltimoreans helping Baltimoreans. Our goal was that we made sure nobody would go hungry if they were in financial need. First it was food but soon BGE, water bills, evictions and other basic financial needs were being addressed.

As the town of Baltimore grew so did Ahavas Yisrael. We were led by the wonderful Rabbanim of the Baltimore community. Together with this Daas Torah and with community dedicated volunteers, Bal Habattim and their wives all would work tirelessly for the tzedaka. Soon, from a small first year budget of under $5,000 when it all started, through today in 2016, Ahavas Yisrael had grown to a budget of over $2.6 Million.

Thousands of children, parents and the aged are being helped. In 2014 with Rabbonim and Board approval Ahavas Yisrael hired an Executive Director, a founder, Rabbi Boruch Brull. Rabbi Brull oversees over 150 active volunteers. Ahavas Yisrael helps well over 500 plus households a year with myriad financial issues.

We need your help! NOW!

Today, Wednesday June 1st from 2:00 PM through Thursday June 2nd at 2:00 PM, Ahavas Yisrael will conduct its very important crowd fundraising event of 2016. Last year Ahavas Yisrael raised well over $800,000. This effort is led by our young and very talented dynamic leadership who work very hard to make this happen.

It is an incredible team effort with much enthusiasm. A successful event insures that Ahavas Yisrael can meet the needs of our growing community.

We ask for every member of our community to go on-line and contribute to this worthy cause. We need 100% participation. Baltimore is a community of chesed; let us make sure that no one in our community goes to bed hungry.

You can make this happen!
