We live in an age when the entire world is one village. Anything that happens anywhere can be seen almost immediately anywhere on earth. If we add to that, Facebook, even technologically challenged people like me can interact, in a way, with people and share ideas and information. This is especially meaningful for me because, through an Israeli invention ,What's App, my children, who are scattered all over,  can communicate, almost as if they were in the same room Modern technology can indeed be a blessing, if  used appropriately.

This morning, I saw the following somewhat funny picture and its ludicrous caption.

A woman named Rina Neeman was having breakfast at a major Israeli hotel and noticed this sign at the salad bar.

Her  Proposed tagline: מתפוצץ בפה. "It explodes in your mouth".

Someone else on Facebook pointed out "Funny, but it makes sense when realizing that the description is half English, half French. Grenades in French = Pomegranates".

Rimon can mean a pomegranate or a grenade. I think the salad has pomegranate seeds in it, not grenades. At least, I hope so.  This ‘funny' picture' helped me focus on what is happening in our beloved Eretz Yisrael right now. The juxtaposition of normal life and explosive violence is indeed a scary mix.

Our family had the following discussion last week on What's App with children all over chiming in. Here are excerpts;

Feigi wrote: Stabbing in shul in Tel Aviv, 10 minutes from Yoni"

I wrote: What can be done about the stabbing's?"

Yoni responded, "Some questions have no good answer"

An anonymous person- in Chutz L'Aretzz, not to be named- wrote "Kill them all, don't let them live in the country!" Another anonymous individual agreed.

To which, Nina Oberstein of Modiin, responded ,"Oy _______No"

Yoni commented, “We know that is not a solution. I was in many operations and a war and that is not the way." To which, Shmuel Oberstein of Modiin said, "Thank you for speaking up .Genocide is not the solution."

i asked Yoni ,who lives and works in Tel Aviv, "Do  you think more people should have guns?"

Yoni responded, "Abba, there are many guns in Israel. No, I do not want to walk around with a gun."

Nina chimed in, "The only place lacking guns are probably the chareidi areas like Meah Shearim" She added, "having people with no training walking around with guns is probably more dangerous than the terrorist attacks."

To wrap up that conversation, which includes other comments, as well, this is what Yoni had to say about this question.

"Yes, I am a sharpshooter and well trained, but that is not the life, I want.

Abba, i am a reserve fighter, I live in Tel Aviv and I am ready any day if I'm called, but, we love life and peace. No one wants to carry guns and fight wars. But, I will, if called."

"Abba, I run to the beach and work out every day so that I'll be in shape if I'm called.,"

To bring this into perspective. I am very proud of all my children. But, when it comes to what Israel should do, I defer to the ones who live there and, especially, to my son who, even when he is a civilian, is always ready to put on his uniform for his country. How can we, armchair philosophers, tell Israelis what they should do.

We are living in a dangerous time all over the world. The goal of terrorism is to terrify people into surrendering. Another goal is to cause such a massive reaction against non-combatants that will engender greater hatred of the West and of the Jews. Terrorism has its own logic and those who succumb to hysteria, whether in the United States or elsewhere, are unwitting allies of the terrorists they profess to want to suppress. I know that this is something that may not be popular to say, especially at a time of great fear and panic.

There is a global war on terrorism. The mass murders in France are just another round and who knows what will happen next.  I hope that this wakes up the entire planet to the danger and that there is concerted effort to deal intelligently and appropriately with Islamic Fundamentalism. I fear that much of today's panic is counterproductive and ultimately, not effective. Our sages tell us not to comfort someone whose dead is before his face. Talking sense to hysterical people is useless.

I have found that out.

I am proud that my children have not lost their ‘tzelem Elokim' and pray that Yoni is not called up and that this horrible time of random stabbing's is brought under control, NOW !
