Jerusalem, Israel - May 8. 2024 - Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant at the IDF’s Division 91 on the northern border: “I am determined to ensure the safe return of the residents of our northern communities to their homes, and to rebuild that which was destroyed. The task here is incomplete.”

This morning (Wednesday, 8 May 2024) Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant held an operational situation assessment at the IDF’s Division 91 on the northern border, together with the Division’s commander, Lt.-Col. Shay Klaper and additional senior IDF officers.

Minister Gallant discussed the adjustment of IDF activities in the face of Hezbollah’s aggression. He also raised the efforts to thwart Hezbollah terrorists and terror infrastructure on Lebanese territory.

Later, Minister Gallant spoke with troops serving in reserve duty in the IDF’s artillery corps.

Excerpts from the Minister’s remarks:

“The defensive battle is a complex one – it is a battle in which you are constantly anticipating the enemy’s actions, while remaining alert and active. The Division is carrying out its missions in an excellent fashion – we have pushed Hezbollah to significant distances.”

“In order to safely return the residents of Israel’s northern communities, we require either a process that will lead to an agreement, or an operational process. It is the military’s duty to prepare the operational process, which also serves as an anchor for additional processes. I am determined to return these communities to their homes and to rebuild that which was destroyed.”

“I am aware of the needs and the feeling that the mission has not yet been completed – indeed, it is incomplete. War is costly and it would have a heavy cost for Israel and a catastrophic one for Hezbollah and Lebanon. We strive to make achievements without war – yet we have an obligation to our citizens.”

“We have very significant, very heavy fire mechanisms and we will be sure to activate these should there be a need and a reason.”
