Jerusalem, Israel - May 5, 2024  - Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Day is observed this year beginning on Sunday evening, May 5, 2024.

The official Israeli Opening Ceremony for Holocaust Remembrance Day was held on Sunday night in Warsaw Ghetto Square, Yad Vashem, on the Mount of Remembrance in Jerusalem.

 Israeli President Isaac Herzog and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered remarks at the Opening Ceremony. 

Holocaust survivor and Chairman of the Yad Vashem Council Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau lit the Memorial Torch as he has done in past years.

Haim Noy spoke on behalf of the survivors and Yitzhak Perlmutter will recite El Maleh Rahamim, the Jewish prayer for the souls of the martyrs.


During the ceremony, Holocaust survivors light six torches with the assistance of a close relative.  First torch: Pnina Hefer; second torch: Allegra Gutta; third torch: Arie Eitani; fourth torch: Raisa Brodsky; fifth torch: Michael Bar-On; sixth torch: Izi Kabilio.

Produced and directed by Eli Levy, these videos are available on the Yad Vashem website in the section dedicated to Holocaust Martyrs, and Heroes' Remembrance Day 2024. As every year, the personal reflections of the survivors are powerful stories of success after intense suffering. 

The emcee for the ceremony was Doria Lampel.


The ceremony features a traditional memorial service, including a recitation of Tehillim by the Chief Rabbi of Israel Rabbi David Lau. The Rishon LeZion, Chief Rabbi of Israel Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef recited the Kaddish and Keil Malei Rachamim was said by Holocaust survivor Yitzhak Perlmutter.

The weather was cool and breezy on the mountain for the crowd seated outside in the plaza with MASA participants and soldiers among the guests. An empty yellow chair symbolic of hostages was placed in the front row next to the seat for former President Reuven Rivlin.
