The wife of Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman pleaded guilty Thursday to charges in the U.S. and admitted that she helped her husband run his multibillion-dollar criminal empire.
Emma Coronel Aispuro, wearing a green jail uniform, appeared in federal court in Washington and pleaded guilty to three federal offenses as part of a plea deal with federal prosecutors.
The charges include knowingly and willfully conspiring to distribute heroin, cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamine for several years. She also pleaded guilty to a money-laundering conspiracy charge and to engaging in transactions with a foreign narcotics trafficker.

The Senate on Thursday confirmed the first Muslim American to serve as a federal judge in U.S. history.
Senators voted 81-16 to confirm Zahid N. Quraishi to serve as a district judge for the district court of New Jersey. Thirty two Republicans joined with Democrats to confirm him.
“Mr. Quraishi will be the first American Muslim in United States history to serve as an Article III federal judge. Third largest religion in the United States; and he’ll become the first to ever serve as an Article III judge,” Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said ahead of Thursday’s vote.

Some experts say unemployment fraud during the coronavirus pandemic could easily reach $400 billion, with most of that money likely ending up in the hands of international crime syndicates in China, Nigeria, Russia and elsewhere, Axios reports.
The federal government has allocated more than $896 billion to state unemployment insurance programs since March 2020, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Inspector General, including enhanced benefits of $300 a week.
But many states weren’t prepared for the influx of unemployment claims filed in the first few months of the pandemic due to ancient computer systems, fewer workers to process claims and strict eligibility requirements.

U.S. regulators are allowing for the release of 10 million doses of Johnson & Johnson's COVID-19 vaccine from a troubled Baltimore factory, but material to make many more must be thrown out because of possible contamination, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press on Friday.
The FDA announced that it had determined that two batches from the plant could be released. But it said several other batches are not suitable for use and additional batches are still under review.

Google is claiming it’s developed artificial intelligence software that can design chips in less than six hours compared with the months it would take humans to make a chip.
In a paper in the journal Nature posted by CNBC, the tech giant’s engineers said the breakthrough could have “major implications” for the semiconductor sector.
The AI has already been used to develop the latest of Google’s tensor processing unit chips that are used to run AI-related tasks.
“We showed that our method can generate chip floorpans that are comparable or superior to human experts in under six hours, whereas humans take months to produce acceptable floorpans for modern accelerators,” the authors wrote in their conclusion.

Ohio is one step closer to a major expansion of its school choice programs. On Wednesday evening, the Ohio Senate passed its version of the Ohio biennial budget that includes significant changes, and advances Agudath Israel’s legislative priorities. In addition to increasing the maximum voucher amounts of the EdChoice Scholarship (from $4,650 to $5,500 for K-8th grade students and from $6,000 to $7,500 for high schoolers), the Senate created several new programs that advance the cause of school choice.
The Senate proposal creates education savings accounts for every single student whose family income is below 300% of the federal poverty level.
These savings accounts will be worth $500 per student in each of the next two years and can be spent on educational activities ...

Tourism Minister Orit Farkash-Hacohen announced that Israel will open its borders to regular tourists from July 1.
“It is time for Israel to open up to tourism and take advantage of its status as a vaccinated country for the benefit of its economy,” Farkash-Hacohen says on Twitter.

The National Weather Service issued a flood warning for Baltimore County and Baltimore City until 5:30 p.m. Friday.
Up to 1 inch of rain had fallen in the past few hours, officials said upon issuing the warning before 2 p.m., stating that another 0.5 inch was possible.

Johnson & Johnson declined to comment on a report that the FDA said to throw out 60 million doses of its COVID-19vaccine that was produced at a troubled Maryland facility over concerns of possible contamination. The report, published by the New York Times, cited people familiar with the situation and comes as the FDA announced it authorized two batches of the vaccine produced at the Emergent BioSolutions facility in Baltimore but found "several other batches" not suitable for use.

Russia is preparing to provide Iran with an advanced satellite that would enable it to track potential military targets across the Middle East, the Washington Post reported on Thursday.
