Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan is again speaking out against crime in the city and Baltimore City Mayor Brandon Scott is asking to meet about solutions. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Hogan was asked about an incident that took place Sunday night in the city where two Korean women were assaulted at the Wonderland Liquor Store in Druid Heights. Surveillance video showed a man attacking the women with a cement block as they were closing late Sunday night. "I was outraged," Hogan said. "It was pretty hard to watch with two older women being smashed in the head with a cinderblock. We're going to get to the bottom of this." Addressing a recent surge in violence, Hogan said: “We are very concerned about the increase in violent crime in the city. It’s got three main r...
'Amid all the cries I approached Avigdor and he told me, ‘Save my child" Rami Alwan, a Bedouin officer with Israel Police, was reunited with the father and son he helped rescue at the Mount Meron disaster last Thursday that left 45 people dead and another 150 injured.  “Rami did not ask me what party I belong to, what stream [of Judaism] I belong to, or if I am a Bedouin or an Arab. Rami saved us,” said Avigdor Hayut, who hosted Alwan at his home in Bnei Brak, where he was mourning with family over the death of his second son, Yedidia.  Hayut thanked Rami Alwan "from the bottom of his heart" for saving his son Shmuel, who also greeted the officer, paraphrasing the Talmudic phrase that "he who saves a life, saves the world." “Anyone who sa...

Baltimore, MD, May 4, 2021 — The Coalition for Jewish Values (CJV) welcomed news today that the U.S. State Department will not participate in the "Durban IV" conference. The United States withdrew from the original conference in 2001, referring to "hateful language" employed in the Durban Declaration, which ignored human rights crises around the world to name only the "Palestinian people" as victims. Rabbi Pesach Lerner, President of the CJV, made the following statement: Join BJL on WhatsApp Status: Click here to Join BJL status for engagements, births, deals, levayos, events & more Join BJL on WhatsApp Groups: Click here to Join an official BJL WhatsApp group for breaking news as it happens We commend the Biden Administration for refusing to participate in t...
President Rivlin will now need to make decision on whether to transfer the mandate to another candidate or back to the Knesset. The mandate given by President Reuven Rivlin to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to form a government following the elections to the 24th Knesset expired at midnight on Tuesday. Moments before the expiration of the mandate, the Likud released a statement indicating that the Prime Minister had returned the mandate to the President. The Likud said, "Due to Bennett's refusal to commit to a right-wing government, which would certainly have led to the formation of a government with the addition of other Knesset members, Prime Minister Netanyahu has now returned the mandate to the President." In Vayikra 26:4 the Torah tells us about a bracha of having rain come down in its proper time. The Mishna in Berachos 54a says that when it rains one should say the bracha of HaTov VeHaMeitiv. The Mishna Berura 221:1 explains that in Eretz Yisrael, where the land is extremely dry, when the rainy season arrives everyone is very excited, and they therefore make the bracha. In the event it continues to rain, we don’t repeat the bracha, it is said just the first time. It stands to reason that in a place where the rains come naturally, and it is not such a great simcha, one would not make the bracha.  The Sefer Kol Bo 87 and the Bais Yosef 221 say that in our times...

John Kerry, the Biden administration’s climate czar, made millions off of his stock in various companies in the energy industry before taking his current post, according to financial disclosures. The former Secretary of State divested his portfolio to avoid conflicts on interest upon becoming President Joe Biden’s Special Presidential Envoy for Climate. An ABC News analysis of Kerry’s filings found, while he substantially lowered his financial interests in the energy sector in recent years, Kerry owned millions of dollars in stock in oil and gas companies during his time in Congress and in the Obama administration. Your information and feedback (anonymous if you so choose) will provide crucial data to the Baltimore City Health Department and The Associated, and provide helpful information for our wonderful community as a whole. Once again, the Vaad HaRabbonim is asking that everyone in our community take this survey. It is also endorsed by our Baltimore City Councilman Isaac “Yitzy” Schleifer. The commission President Joe Biden created to study expanding the Supreme Court could give Democrats the chance to realize Democrats’ goals of limiting the tenure of U.S. Supreme Court justices, The Daily Caller reported. Biden on April 9 signed an executive order creating the presidential commission on the Supreme Court of the United States, to examine topics like “the genesis of the reform debate; the Court’s role in the Constitutional system; the length of service and turnover of justices on the Court; the membership and size of the Court; and the Court’s case selection, rules, and practices.” Join BJL on WhatsApp Status: Click here to Join BJL status for engagements, births, deals, levayos, events & more Join BJL on WhatsApp Groups: Click...

The United States set another record for the number of air travelers since the pandemic set in, although passenger numbers remain far below 2019 levels. More than 1.6 million people were screened at U.S. airport checkpoints on Sunday, according to the Transportation Security Administration. House Republicans are moving closer to ousting Conference Chair Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) from leadership, and are already considering replacements — including Reps. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), Ann Wagner (R-Mo.) and Jackie Walorski (R-Ind.), congressional aides tell Axios. What we’re hearing: Most members recognize Cheney can’t be succeeded by a white man, given their top two leaders — House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) — fill that demographic. Hundreds of Ukrainians attended marches celebrating Nazi SS soldiers, including the first such event in Kyiv. The so-called Embroidery March took place in the capital on April 28, the 78th anniversary of the establishment of the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS, also known as the 1st Galician. It was a force set up under German occupation auspices comprised of ethnic Ukrainian and German volunteers and conscripts. The marchers held banners displaying the unit’s symbol. The Kyiv march by about 300 people was an import from the western city of Lviv, which for several years has hosted such events. A day earlier, hundreds attended a larger Embroidery March there. Ukraine has a large minority of ethnic Russians, who oppose the glorification of Nazi collaborators. Such actions w...
Sergeant Rami Alwan, a Druze Israel Police officer who rescued Rav Avigdor Chiyut and his 10-year-old son Shmuel during the Meron disaster came to the Chiyut home in Bnei Brak on Monday to comfort the family on the loss of 13-year-old Yedidya, z’l, who didn’t survive the disaster. The grieving father thanked Rami for saving his other son. He said that the officer saved them without asking which class he belonged to, which shows that we can all get along together peacefully if we choose to. Afterwards the boy himself thanked the officer for saving him. The officer got up and gave both the father and son hugs. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room when the moving encounter took place.
