Baltimore, MD - Jan. 30, 2023 - Tu B'Shevat (the 15th day of Shevat) is the new year for the trees - the day when the sap starts to rise in the trees in order to begin the formation of fruit. The significance of this day demonstrates that the very early stages are critical to the outcome. We should not view our lives as independent, isolated days, but rather as a cumulative growth process, building from the very beginning. Click here to listen

At a time when we are flooded with gloomy prognostications, the following episode in this week's Torah portion can plant hope inside us and give us strength. After the splitting of the Red Sea, the nation erupted in song, giving thanks for the miracle that had just occurred. In that same moment, Miriam the prophetess immediately took a tambourine and led the women in dance: "Miriam, the prophetess, Aaron's sister, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women came out after her with tambourines and with dances."But hold on a minute. Where did Miriam suddenly find a tambourine in the middle of the desert? Our commentators explain that Miriam took the tambourine with her from Egypt, where she had kept it by her side during many years of slavery and had it with her still. She had ...

A Journey With Joy If all you knew about Malky Hirth, A”h, was her illness, this may be a strange thing to hear, but for anyone who knew Malky, it is the most obvious truth about her: Malky was synonymous with life, with simchas hachaim, with the joy of being alive. Malky was born on Friday night, just as her father whispered the last words in sefer Tehillim: Kol haneshamah tehallel Kah — Every life praises Hashem. At the young age of two, Malky’s pure closeness to Hashem was already apparent. “I wish I could be a bird,” Malky said to her mother one day while walking outside. “Then I would be able to sing to Hashem all day!” Malky overflowed with thanks to Hashem, singing songs of gratitude for everything in her life. Thanks for her family, tha...
Mayor Brandon Scott has expanded his Group Violence Reduction Strategy (GVRS) in the Western District, which has seen two deadly shootings in the month since the expansion, Fox45 reports. Three people were shot on Saturday near Laurens St and Pennsylvania Ave, resulting in one death, one injured person, and a woman in critical condition. Two children were also injured when their car crashed during the shooting. Artist aleXsandro Palombo created a series of murals called "Track 21 The Simpsons deported to Auschwitz" at the Holocaust Memorial in Milan, Italy. i24 News reports the murals depict the famous cartoon family as prisoners in Nazi concentration camps during the Holocaust. The site was a former station en route to the camps. The first mural portrays the family before deportation, while the second depicts them as emaciated and stripped of dignity. The artist aims to transmit the horror of the Jewish genocide to future generations through art as a powerful antidote against oblivion. Palombo has previously tackled the theme of the Holocaust in his works, which have been analyzed by Israeli historian Batya Brutin.
i24News reports that according to a report in the Wall Street Journal Israel carried out a drone strike on a defense compound in Iran's Isfahan province, targeting a facility storing ballistic missiles. The attack was called a "cowardly strike" by Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian. Iran claims its facilities have been targeted by Israel in a "shadow war," following the collapse of the nuclear deal with world powers. The drones used were described as "quadcopters equipped with bomblets" by Iran's state-run IRNA news agency.
In 2022, Baltimore recorded its 8th consecutive year with over 300 homicides. Fox45 reports the Baltimore Police Department (BPD) has been under a federal consent decree since the investigation by federal law enforcement determined the agency had engaged in unconstitutional policing. BPD has made progress with compliance, but it has not led to a reduction in gun violence in the city. Former BPD Commissioner Ed Norris believes that the consent decree has led to hands-off policing and changing this would reduce crime. Norris argues that the consent decree limits the police from taking action and the reported decrease in civilian complaints against BPD officers is not necessarily a positive.

The recent explosion at a military site in Isfahan, Iran was reportedly a drone attack on a munitions factory, according to Al Arabiya al Hadath, citing American sources, according to Arutz-7. The attack was carried out by the US Air Force and another country, not Israel. The attack was intended to send a message to Iran and Russia about not allowing factories for exporting ballistic weapons. According to Iranian media, three suicide drones were used, similar to previous attacks. US and foreign sources report the attack was successful and caused significant damage, while Iran claims it was unsuccessful with only minor damage. The US Secretary of State is scheduled to arrive in Israel following a recent joint military exercise between the US and Israel.
