A shallow 5.6-magnitude earthquake shook Indonesia's main island Java
The number of people killed in an earthquake in Indonesia's main island of Java on Monday rose to 162, West Java governor Ridwan Kamil said.
The governor of the worst-hit province had initially reported 56 deaths and more than 700 injured.
"Data from the district head team - 56 people died and more than 700 injured. Because there are still a lot of people trapped on the scene, we assume injuries and fatalities will increase over time," Kamil told a news conference broadcast by Kompas TV.

Hours before Baltimore City Council is set to vote on a bill shrinking the amount of time council members need to serve in order to earn a pension, community leaders in the city rallied against the plan.
Baltimore City Council set in motion a plan to change the amount of time city council needed to serve in order to earn a pension. Right now, council members need to serve 12 years in order to earn a pension. A bill before city council on November 21 would change it to 8 years of service.
Jovani Patterson, leader of People for Elected Accountability and Civic Engagement, said the move amounts to "unbridled, brazen greed and corruption" by members of Baltimore City Council.

Aharon Haliwa, head of the IDF's Military Intelligence Directorate, has warned that Iran is considering disrupting the World Cup.
Speaking at an INSS conference, Haliwa said, "These are the days of the World Cup. We need to say that Iran is on the entire field, and also under the field. We need to look at the events - their speed and their strength. Iran is considering whether or not to disrupt the World Cup games in Qatar."

A Tel Aviv court ruled in favor of the Netanyahu family Monday, ordering former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to pay the Netanyahus damages of 97,500 shekels for defamation.
Judge Amit Yair of the Tel Aviv Magistrate’s Court handed down the ruling Monday morning, in a defamation lawsuit brought by the Netanyahu family after Olmert publicly claimed that Benjamin Netanyahu, his wife Sara, and their son, Yair, suffer from an “incurable mental illness,” and have been hospitalized as a result.
The lawsuit was filed in May 2021, with the Netanyahus demanding 837,000 shekels ($256,360) in damages.

Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich (R) has waded into tensions over election concerns in Maricopa County, demanding answers about some Election Day printing issues before state election send in final election results.
The Arizona AG’s Elections Integrity Unit has received “hundreds of complaints” about the state’s election administration since Election Day, Brnovich said in a four-page letter to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office on Saturday.

According to the extremist right-wing faction, prime minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu's party backtracked on an initial agreement to give Otzma Yehudit an additional ministry in the next government.

Qatar will not allow any cooked kosher food and public Jewish prayers during the FIFA World Cup which kicked off on Sunday in Doha, forcing religious fans to cancel their trips.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., on Sunday vowed to remove Democratic Reps. Eric Swalwell, Adam Schiff and Ilhan Omar from their congressional committees when Republicans retake control in the new Congress.
During an appearance on Fox News’ "Sunday Morning Futures," McCarthy told anchor Maria Bartiromo that he will keep the promise he made in January to remove Swalwell and Schiff from the House Intelligence Committee and Omar from the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
McCarthy said Swalwell's association with a Chinese spy, Schiff’s promotion of the Steele dossier and Omar’s criticism of Israel disqualify them from serving on their respective panels.

A state audit of Maryland's unemployment benefits system found millions of dollars of benefits were improperly allocated during the pandemic.
The audit covered April 17, 2017, through November 15, 2020.
Division of Unemployment Insurance operations were greatly impacted due to the COVID pandemic, the Department of Legislative Services said, which increased unemployment insurance activity, requiring an expansion and modification of multiple operations.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said on Saturday that when he is speaker of the House next year he plans to remove Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., from the House Foreign Affairs Committee over her "antisemitic" comments.

Baltimore has reached 300 homicides for the eighth consecutive year.
The Baltimore Police Department said a 34-year-old man was shot around 10:30 p.m. last night in the 3400 block of Spelman Road in the Cherry Hill neighborhood.
When officers arrived to the scene, police said they found the 34-year-old suffering from gunshot wounds.
The victim was take to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

Elon Musk said he would reinstate Donald Trump‘s account on Twitter Inc. after polling users on the platform, broadening the former president’s potential reach days after he declared another run for the White House.
The move also underscored how Mr. Musk has made himself the principal decider on all things Twitter after buying the platform for $44 billion late last month. Mr. Musk had previously said he would establish a content council to weigh in on account reinstatements.
The Twitter poll that Mr. Musk launched Friday recorded 51.8% of votes in favor of reinstating Mr. Trump’s account and 48.2% against.
