Baltimore, MD - Apr. 1, 2020 - For a long time, Tova Cohn knew that she wanted to go into a field where she could work with her hands, something which she really loves to do. It wasn’t until three years ago, however, as a tenth grade Bais Yaakov of Baltimore High School student, that her aspirations began to crystallize. Tova’s passion for entering the biomedical engineering field stems (pun intended!) from her Bais Yaakov STEM experience. STEM is an acronym which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. According to the latest National Center for Education Statistics, young adults with bachelor’s or higher degrees in the STEM fields tend to have more positive economic outcomes, such as higher median earnings, than do those with degrees in non-STEM f...
Israeli Health Ministry Director-General Moshe Bar-Siman-Tov said that several countries, including Israel, has decided to recommend that the public wear protective masks when leaving the house. “There is no hurry to head out and buy masks, you can improvise at home. You can cover your face with a piece of cloth, for example.” The Sion company in Sderot will produce 35 million face masks for the Defense Ministry. 11 million masks will be produced by the end of April and 5.5 million N95 masks will be produced as well. The Defense Ministry helped import a special machine to make production of the advanced masks possible.
The US Food and Drug Administration is requesting that manufacturers pull all prescription and over-the-counter ranitidine drugs, known by the brand name Zantac, from the market immediately, the agency announced on Wednesday. The FDA noted that an ongoing investigation has determined that levels of a contaminant in the heartburn medications increase over time and when stored at higher-than-normal temperatures, pose a risk to public health. The contaminant, N-nitrosodimethylamine or NDMA, is a probable human carcinogen and the FDA has been investigating levels of it in ranitidine since the summer of 2019. "We didn't observe unacceptable levels of NDMA in many of the samples that we tested," Dr. Janet Woodcock, director of the FDA's Center for D...
The coronavirus crisis is first and foremost about people. People stuck at home, people out of work. People sick with the virus, people caring for them. People canceling dream weddings and vacations, people deciding public-health policies. Technology is also about people. Here in Israel, a powerhouse of innovative technology, people are busy inventing and adapting technologies to ease the corona burden. “Technology has a great role to play in solving and helping us get through this crisis, from diagnosis, mitigation, patient tracking, contamination prevention, and protecting medical staff, to education and exercise for the homebound,” says OurCrowd CEO Jon Medved. As you read below about Israeli medical technologies for the COVID-19 pandemic, remember that each one i...
Maryland Lt. Gov. Boyd Rutherford said Wednesday that state officials are not putting a timeline on when restrictions put in place in response to COVID-19 could be relaxed. "We're hoping that the steps we've taken will level out the curve in regard to the number of new cases and particularly the number of people who have to go into hospitals," Rutherford told Yuripzy Morgan. "Generally speaking we're going to be looking for a slowdown or a plateauing of the rise of infections and, particularly, the hospitalizations." Though Rutherford acknowledged the burden the closures and directives from Gov. Larry Hogan have placed on Maryland residents and businesses, he said a push by Comptroller Peter Franchot for rent and mortgage relief goes too far. He warned of a "cascading effe...
For stock investors the second quarter kicked off on a down note as U.S. cases of the coronavirus topped 200,000. The Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged over 973 points or 4 percent, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite fell 4.4 percent. Boston Federal Reserve President Eric Rosengren believes the coronavirus is a ‘Black Swan’ event that will result in two-quarters of negative GDP growth coupled with a 10 percent unemployment rate for several months, a far cry from the current rate of 3.5 percent. The selling follows the worst first quarter in years after President Trump warned the number of COVID-19 infections is set to surge warning Americans that the country is in for a “very painful two weeks” and that the&nbs...

The latest: In the United States, there are more than 203,000 cases, according to a Johns Hopkins University tally. More than 4,300 people have died nationwide. President Donald Trump on Sunday extended federal social distancing guidelines until the end of April. While the president has said nationwide stay-at-home order is "pretty unlikely," more than 80% of Americans live in areas under a stay-at-home order issued by their state's governors. With a death in Hawaii reported Tuesday, Wyoming is the only state that has not had any reported coronavirus deaths. Globally, the number of cases has surpassed 887,000 with more than 44,000 deaths, Hopkins reports. The number of U.S. coronavirus cases surged by more than 14,000 in just a few hours Wednesday as the death toll to...
Baltimore County Executive John Olszewski Jr. said he was floored by the White House estimate Tuesday that even if social distancing measure remain in place, 100,000 to 240,000 Americans may die from COVID-19 "It's very sobering and so I want to applaud most of the residents of Baltimore County. They've actually been complying with the orders that are out there," Olszewski told C4 on Wednesday. Authorities have only had to issue two cease and desist orders to non-essential businesses that remained open in defiance of Gov. Larry Hogan's executive order. Two police officers and two EMS workers have tested positive for the coronavirus. Olszewski said that though the county had a stockpile of some essentials, protective equipment for priority personnel is at a premi...
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, issued a statewide stay-at-home order on Wednesday afternoon to curb the rate of infection in his state during the global coronavirus pandemic. The order will go into effect at midnight Thursday and last for at least 30 days. “It makes sense to make this move now,” the governor said during a press conference Wednesday, adding that he was taking the action after President Trump extended the social distancing guidelines nationwide for another 30 days. DeSantis, who balked for weeks at issuing such an order, also changed his mind less than a day after receiving a letter from 13 Democratic members of Congress urging him to “immediately issue a statewide stay-at-home order t...
