Baltimore, MD – March 30, 2020 –  We’ve all heard what the adults around the globe have been saying – and watched the YouTube parodies they have been singing – about the Coronavirus. I thought it was about time that we check in on the kids in our community to hear their take on this whirlwind of unfolding events, and to see how they are managing. I began by asking 14-year-old Beth Tfiloh freshman, Michael Bitman. “I really feel that it is kind of cool that we can learn from home,” shared Michael. “I was reading that a lot of people in public school are not learning because the public schools cannot necessarily expect their students to have Wi-Fi. Therefore, they cannot connect to some of the programs that...
One ultra-Orthodox community near Jerusalem, at first badly hit by Covid-19, has been exemplary in stamping out the virus. "Globes" finds out how they did it. The media are devoting great attention to infection in Israel's haredi (ultra-Orthodox) communities. One such town, however, initially hit hardest of all, has halted the spread of the virus. Kiryat Yearim (Telz-Stone) in the Judean hills west of Jerusalem was initially called the "local coronavirus capital." For almost a week, however, there have been no recorded cases of infection there. One of the residents was infected by a relative who arrived from France, and then infected several more residents at a Purim party attended by dozens of Kiryat Yearim residents. Within a short time, it was learned that 2,000 of the ...

Annapolis, Md. — In the absence of a coordinated federal response to the coronavirus pandemic, leaders at the state and local levels across the country are filling the void. Only essential workers are currently on the job, including the governor, who on Monday issued a stay-home order statewide. "We believe it's necessary to further get people off the streets so we can continue to save thousands of lives," Gov. Larry Hogan said Tuesday on CNN. Hogan spent Tuesday morning, and will spend Tuesday evening, messaging on two fronts in his role as leader of Maryland and as chairman of the National Governors Association. Hogan hit the airwaves Tuesday morning to talk to people in Maryland and beyond, including a seven-minute interview on CNN. And, in case the White H...

Trump delivered a sobering COVID-19 assessment on Tuesday evening, warning the country is in for a “...
Baltimore, MD - Apr. 1, 2020 -  Baltimore City officials said they anticipate a $42.3 million budget deficit through June 30, the end of the fiscal year. City officials cited a sharp loss of revenue as a result of the shutdown of businesses ordered to stop the spread of coronavirus cases. Robert Cenname, Baltimore City's budget director, listed several revenue sources significantly affected by the restrictions placed on business and travel. He said fewer people are driving, resulting in lower parking revenues and money the city receives for maintenance of highways. Hotels have lower occupancy, resulting in lower revenue from the hotel tax. The Baltimore Convention Center is not hosting meetings and conferences, affecting tourism revenues. The drop in value in markets has lowe...
Baltimore County Police Chief Melissa Hyatt said Wednesday the department is taking further protective measures amid the coronavirus outbreak. Hyatt told WBAL NewsRadio 1090 and FM 101.5's Bryan Nehman the department will start taking officers' temperatures prior to their shift starts. For some time, Hyatt said the department struggled to get temporal and infrared thermometers, but a shipment came in a few days ago.  The details still need to be worked out; however, Hyatt said supervisors will most likely take the officers' temperature before the start of their shift.
Gov. Larry Hogan announced Monday that three Maryland Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program centers have been converted to drive-thru coronavirus testing sites. The three sites in Bel Air, Glen Burnie and Waldorf are free, appointment-only drive-thru testing for the coronavirus, according to Hogan. Although the Glen Burnie location opened for a short period of time Monday, all three locations will officially open Wednesday. Testing Requirements: - Meet coronavirus testing criteria by a licensed healthcare provider. - Receive an order from a healthcare provider. - Register an account and make an appointment online. Those in the Bel Air area must make an appointment with the University of Maryland Medical System Upper Chesapeake Health hospital.  Once the individual's tes...
The Pesach of 1986 was our first year living in Efrat. We had five young children at the time, ranging in age from one to eight. We decided that, rather than join a larger extended family seder, we would do our own, but invite guests. The community had arranged for a number of families, who had recently made aliya from the Soviet Union, to be hosted by families in Efrat, and we were among them. We were all excited about it, and the children prepared for it as well. At 3PM we got a phone call that some of the families had not come, and our guests were among them. We were stunned. A seder with just our nuclear family? What does that even look like? It was wonderful. The center of the focus was undeniably and only the children. “Vehigadta l’bincha. – And you shall tell [...
Jerusalem, Israel - Apr. 1, 2020 - The Tokyo Olympic Games have been postponed from the summer of 2020 until 2021, due to the current situation with the COVID-19 pandemic.  Israeli Marathon runner Beatie Deutsch wrote a letter to the Olympic Committee requesting the women's marathon race be held on Sunday, not on Shabbos. Posting on Facebook, "Speedy Beatie" as she has been called by admiring fans, asked her words to be shared to get the message out there, beginning with: "Thank you for your support always ❤️❤️ My name is Beatie Deutsch and I am Israel's national champion in the marathon, an Orthodox Jewish mother of five and have been training for the Olympics for the past year. First of all, I want to commend your decision to postpone the Tokyo 2020 Olympic...
An all-star cast of singers has come together virtually to cover the MBD classic “Someday” for a good cause. The music video, shot entirely on cellphones, was produced in support of Chai Lifeline’s Isolated Together emergency response campaign to help children with life-threatening illnesses and their families who have been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.  The video features Avraham Fried, Mordechai Shapiro, Benny Friedman, Gad Elbaz, Levy Falkowitz, Zusha, and a host of artists from across the Jewish world. Dini Storch, who composed the original song, is herself a Chai Lifeline mother (of Hudis a”h).

The following are remarks delivered last week by the Sanzer Rebbe in Netanya, Israel. It’s important to contemplate that just as this virus cannot be seen by our eyes and yet it has the power to transform the whole world, so too the Almighty is not seen but runs the whole world. While you might say that with the right instruments one can see the virus, you should know that if you have the right “instruments” you can also “see” the Almighty. Those instruments can be accessed – as is mentioned in many works and throughout chassidic literature – through deep connection to Torah….It is forbidden to say about anything – certainly about something so major –that it is just a random event. We must attempt to ponder: Why did Hashem bring th...
Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) Tuesday called for a congressional inquiry into the World Health Organization (WHO) over its response to the coronavirus, accusing the group of “helping Communist China cover up” the full extent of the virus’s spread. Scott, a vocal China critic, has voiced concerns about the relationship between the WHO and Beijing in the past and said the health organization “failed” to get adequate information from China out to the public. “The mission of the WHO is to get public health information to the world so every country can make the best decisions to keep their citizens safe. When it comes to Coronavirus, the WHO failed. They need to be held accountable for their role in promoting misinformation and helping Communist China cover up a...
