When Trinity Lutheran Church of Columbia, Missouri, decided that they wanted their playground resurfaced with car tire scraps, they probably didn’t think that Agudath Israel of America would end up invoking their experience in a brief filed before the Supreme Court.  Agudath Israel has filed an amicus curiae (friend of the court) brief in the Supreme Court of the United States in a case, Espinoza v. Montana Department of Revenue, involving a Montanta tax credit program for donations to scholarship funds for students attending private schools. The Montana Department of Revenue ruled that the scholarship could not be used at religious schools, on the grounds that the state Constitution contained a provision that prohibited government aid, even indirect aid, to religious inst...
Baltimore, MD - Apr. 11, 2019 - In the wake of outbreaks in areas with large Orthodox communities around the world and the recent Measles exposure which occurred in our community, the Baltimore City Health Department will provide a free MMR clinic for adults between the ages of 30 and 62 in conjunction with and sponsored by Sinai Hospital this Friday at Shomrei Emunah. The Vaad HaRabbanim, in consultation with Sinai Hospital, Hatzalah, community schools and physicians and State, City and County Health Departments, have expressed the clear imperative that all members of the community make sure they are vaccinated and immune to the disease. Specifically, adults between the ages of 30 and 62 have generally not received 2 MMR vaccines. This group has, in other communities, served as a compone...
There is a long-standing tradition that the Shabbos before Pesach is referred to as Shabbos Hagodol – The Great Shabbos.  Virtually every commentary relates this title all the way back to Yitzias Mitzrayim.  The year Bnei Ysroel left Mitzrayim, Pesach fell on a Thursday.  Hence, the preceding Shabbos was the 10th of Nissan.  This was a particularly special day.  It was on the 10th of Nissan that Bnei Yisroel were commanded to take the lamb which would eventually be used as the first Korban Pesach.  (Shemos, 12:3)  Accordingly, we mark the Shabbos which precedes Pesach as Shabbos Hagodol.  (Tur Orech Chayim, Siman 430). The Halachic authorities go into great detail as to the reason for the observance.  They point out that the lamb was the ...
Washington - President Donald Trump’s sister has retired as a federal appellate judge in Philadelphia, ending a civil misconduct inquiry launched after a report that she participated in Trump family schemes to dodge taxes. The retirement of Maryanne Trump Barry was revealed in an April 1 order signed by a top court official in New York, where the misconduct case was assigned to prevent conflicts of interest for judges who knew Barry. A judicial panel began the review in response to four citizen complaints filed in October after The New York Times published a story alleging the president and his siblings evaded inheritance taxes. The April 1 order said Barry’s voluntary Feb. 11 retirement ends the review stemming from claims based on the news article alleging that Barry may h...
San Francisco - Uber Technologies Inc on Thursday revealed its initial public offering (IPO) filing, saying more than 90 million riders used the service worldwide while warning it may never make a profit due to pressure from rivals. The Uber filing gave the first comprehensive financial picture of the ride-hailing and transportation services company. Started in 2009 after its founders struggled to get a cab on a snowy night, Uber has changed the way millions of people travel and commute but continues to lose money. The filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission revealed Uber had 91 million users on its platforms at the end of 2018. Uber said in its filing it expects operating expenses to “increase significantly in the foreseeable future” and cautioned it “m...
New York - A senator is introducing a bill in Congress requiring plane makers to provide airlines with all safety equipment now considered optional and to do so without an additional charge. Democratic Sen. Edward Markey of Massachusetts says safety equipment that had not been installed on two Boeing 737 Max jets might have saved them from fatal crashes. He says the equipment might have alerted crews to false readings from sensors implicated in the crashes that killed all 346 aboard. Markey says plane makers shouldn’t treat safety features as luxuries that can generate additional fees like premium seats and extra bathrooms. Boeing says its planes are equipped with “all critical features” necessary for safety. It has said it will provide two features missing in the two ...
Washington - President Donald Trump treated four World War II veterans to an Oval Office meeting Thursday, fulfilling a birthday wish for 95-year-old Allen Jones and giving three other veterans age 100 and older a day to remember. One of the men, 101-year-old Floyd Wigfield, managed to win a promise from the president for a return flight on Air Force One following this June’s ceremony marking the 75th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy. “We’ll work that out,” Trump said. “You’ll like Air Force One.” Trump had met Jones at a Veterans of Foreign Wars convention last year and Jones asked to spend his birthday with the president. Trump looked happy to oblige, joking with the men and their families, and asking each one to say a few words....

THE FOLLOWING IS VIA YWN The Der Yid Newspaper (affiliated with the Satmar community of Williamsburg) printed a strong editorial against the anti-vaxxers. The newspaper also took the rare step of printing it in English. It would be good if it can be posted. The English below is a verbatim translation of the Yiddish. Below is an edited version for smoother reading and clarity. Senseless! Heartless! Torah-less and Reckless Orthodox Jewry in general, and Williamsburg in particular, found themselves in the media this week due to the measles outbreak that is spreading among observant Jews more than any other community. The City, doctors, community leaders and the yeshivas have been appealing with public for weeks and months to stop the foolishness that penetrated to a small percentage of o...
Brooklyn, NY - The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has launched an investigation after a report that one of its drivers made references to the measles when an obviously Chasidic man boarded her bus. Rabbi David Niederman, executive director and president of the United Jewish Organizations of Williamsburg said that the incident happened last week aboard a B57 bus.  A Chasidic man in his forties was waiting at the corner of Flushing and Franklin avenues when the B57 bus reportedly passed him by.  The man ran over to the bus, which was stopped in traffic, and knocked on the door, hoping to board the bus so that he could get to work. “As he came up the stairs, the bus driver covered her face with her sweater and turned away from him towards the window,” Rabbi Nied...
Recent visitors to Woodbury Common may have been exposed to the measles after a New York City resident with a confirmed case of measles visited the mega shopping area, according to the Orange County Health Department. The infected person visited the shopping area between the hours of 4 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, March 31, the department said in a news release. Areas the person visited included Nike Factory Store and Sayki Men’s Fashion Store, they added.
Yankelevich has taken a different path however, and decided to seek elected office outside of the constraints of the haredi system. A number of haredi women have fought a prominent battle in recent years to demand female haredi representation within Shas and United Torah Judaism (UTJ), as well as some initiatives outside the current haredi parties.Although they have notched up some legal victories, their goal of representation on the Shas and UTJ lists still appears very distant. Omer Yankelevich – 41, and a resident of Beit Shemesh – has taken a different path however, and decided to seek elected office outside of the constraints of the haredi system, and was placed 23rd on Blue and White’s electoral list.Although UTJ and Shas have not permitted any women t...
London - The U.S. Justice Department has charged WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange with conspiring with Chelsea Manning to break into a classified government computer. The charge was announced Thursday after Assange was taken into custody in London in connection with a U.S. extradition request, as well as for breaching U.K. bail conditions in 2012. His lawyer has previously said that Assange planned to fight any U.S. charges against him. The indictment accuses Assange of assisting Manning, a former U.S. intelligence analyst, in cracking a password that helped Manning infiltrate Pentagon computers. Ecuador’s government says that as part of its decision to expel Julian Assange from its embassy in London, it has withdrawn the Ecuadorian citizenship he was granted last year in a faile...
Redmond, WA -  Authorities say a 20-month-old boy survived a six-story fall from suburban Seattle apartment window after the toddler landed on the roof of a parked car that cushioned the impact of the plunge. Redmond police spokesman James Perry told the KIRO television station that the toddler “landed in a way where the car absorbed enough of the impact that he was awake and crying when paramedics arrived” Wednesday afternoon. The boy was in serious but stable condition at a hospital. Perry said the toddler was alone in a bedroom, while his mother and two siblings were in another room. Investigators believe the boy propped himself on the edge of a window that was cracked open, pushed through a screen and tumbled about 60 feet (18 meters).
Washington - It was a far cry from “I love WikiLeaks!” President Donald Trump declared on Thursday that “I know nothing about WikiLeaks” after its disheveled founder Julian Assange was hauled out of the Ecuadorian Embassy in London to face charges, a stark contrast to how candidate Trump showered praise on Assange’s hacking organization night after night during the final weeks of the 2016 presidential campaign. Asked about Thursday’s arrest, Trump said at the White House, “It’s not my thing. I know there is something having to do with Julian Assange. I’ve been seeing what’s happened with Assange and that will be a determination, I would imagine, mostly by the attorney general, who’s doing an excellent job. So, he’ll ...
Scranton, PA - A Pennsylvania man created a digital image of himself pointing an AR-15 rifle at a group of praying Jewish men and posted it online, one of several cyber threats he made against Jewish, Muslim and black people, prosecutors said Thursday in announcing a criminal charge. Corbin Kauffman, 30, used aliases to post hundreds of racist, anti-Semitic and Islamophobic messages, images and videos, several of which contained threats, prosecutors said. Kauffman “expressed a desire to commit genocide and ‘hate crimes,’ and called for or depicted images of the killing of Jewish people, black people and Muslim people,” the U.S. attorney’s office in Scranton said in a news release. The Lehighton man was charged April 1 with interstate transmission of threats,...
Washington - U.S. President Donald Trump said he and South Korean President Moon Jae-in will discuss North Korea during their White House meeting on Thursday, including potential additional summits with the North’s leader, Kim Jong Un. Trump said good things have come out of negotiations with North Korea even though Washington did not get what it wanted from the meetings with Kim. He said great progress was made and that he got to know and respect the North Korean leader. Moon was in Washington for talks that he hoped would help put denuclearization with North Korea back on track after a failed summit between the United States and North Korean leaders in February. Ahead of his trip, aides to Moon stressed the need to revive U.S.-North Korea talks as soon as possible after a second...
