According to a Channel 20 report, organizers decided on the unusual move of holding a religious ceremony to install the mezuzah as a gesture to Israel and following the recommendation of U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman. THE FOLLOWING IS VIA YWN A number of Sephardi rabbonim are working to encourage Yachad party leader Eli Yishai to enter the Jerusalem mayoral race, hoping they will be able to get Shas to back the former party leader in his bid to enter City Hall, Yehuda Schlesinger reports in Yisrael Hayom. Yishai in recent months has stated on more than one occasion that he is not interested in local elections, and that he only plans to run in national elections. The rabbonim feel if elected as mayor of Jerusalem, Yishai will not run in the next Knesset elections, and his party will not enter the national elections race. This they feel will bring an end to the controversy between Yishai and Shas, as Shas would back Yishai’s bid for mayor and this would result in Sephardi unity. Senior Shas offici...
NEW YORK (AP) — If you've ever wondered exactly what sorts of things Facebook would like you not to do on its service, you're in luck. For the first time, the social network is publishing detailed guidelines to what does and doesn't belong on its service — 27 pages worth of them, in fact. So please don't make credible violent threats or promote terrorism or the poaching of endangered species; attempt to buy marijuana, sell firearms, or list prescription drug prices for sale; post instructions for self-injury;  or commit multiple homicides at different times or locations. Facebook already banned most of these actions on its previous "community standards" page , which sketched out the company's standards in broad strokes. But on...
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is warning that if Iran restarts its nuclear program it "will have bigger problems than they have ever had before." Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron will be discussing the Iran nuclear deal Tuesday during their meetings at the White House. Macron wants Trump to maintain the deal. Trump is undecided but has called it "a terrible deal." Though Trump has warmly welcomed Macron to Washington, the two have disagreements to sort through, including Trump's decision to leave the multinational Paris climate change agreement. While with Macron, Trump refused to answer a reporter's question as to whether he is considering a pardon for his personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, whose office was raided by the FBI. Trump called it "a stupid...
Question #1: How many mitzvos? “Is keeping kosher more than one mitzvah?” Question #2: Food for thought “Am I required to eat each of the kosher species?” Question #3: Check your scales “Must I check fish for scales each time I purchase one?” Introduction: Two weeks ago we discovered that when the Torah discusses which species are kosher, it says (in parshas Shemini), “These are the living things from which you may eat,” which the midrashei halacha and the Rambam count as mitzvos aseih. We noted that the Rambam considers these as lav haba miklal aseih, a prohibition verbalized as a mitzvas aseih, which is sometimes called an issur aseih. We also noted that the Rambam counts four different mitzvos aseih, one to eat only kosher an...

A two-year-old boy died Tuesday afternoon, after he was forgotten in a car outside of Haifa in northern Israel. Paramedics and emergency first responders from MDA and United Hatzalah were called to the scene, and attempted to resuscitate the child. Despite their efforts to save the boy, however, emergency medical teams were ultimately forced to declare the child dead. “When I got there, I saw a toddler, unconscious, next to a car,” said MDA paramedic Haim Atia. “He wasn’t breathing and had no heartbeat. JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli military says it has demolished the home of a Palestinian involved in the killing of a West Bank settler. The military said on Tuesday that troops knocked down the home of Ahmad Konba in Jenin. It says he was part of a group involved in the fatal drive-by shooting in January of Rabbi Raziel Shevah from an Israeli settlement outpost. During the demolition, the military says shots were fired and explosive devices hurled toward the forces. An Israeli paramilitary soldier was slightly injured. Israel typically demolishes the homes of Palestinian attackers as a deterrent measure, but Palestinians consider the policy collective punishment. Israel captured the West Bank, along with the Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem in the 1967 Mideast war, areas the Palestini...
BANGKOK (AP) — Thailand is willing and able to host a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, but no plans have been made to do so, the country's foreign minister said Tuesday. Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai was responding to questions from reporters who noted that Bangkok was one of several possible venues mentioned for such a summit, which Trump said could take place in early June to discuss North Korea's denuclearization. It would be the first-ever meeting between the leaders of the two countries. Don said Thailand was able to help with such a meeting and had hosted talks between the two countries before, including one set of talks in 2000 that had led to improved relations. He said speculation that Thailand might be the host...
Brooklyn, NY - The NYPD is turning to the public for assistance, hoping that surveillance footage will help them nab the man who viciously beat a Chasidic man as he walked home from shul on Shabbos afternoon. As previously reported on VIN News (http://bit.ly/2HVJE75), a 52 year old Crown Heights resident was assaulted by a man who made anti-Semitic remarks and threatened to kill him repeatedly. Police describe the suspect as a 6 foot tall bearded black man in his forties, weighing 200 pounds and wearing dark clothing.  Surveillance video shows the suspect wearing glasses and a dark baseball cap with a colored bill. The incident, the second to involve the beating of a Chasidic man in Crown Heights in a week, is being investigated by the NYPD as a hate crime.  Two rewards have b...
BERLIN (AP) — Germany's main Jewish leader says he would advise people visiting big cities against wearing Jewish skullcaps, following a street assault last week on two young men wearing them. The attack in Berlin, in which a 19-year-old Syrian asylum-seeker is a suspect, added to growing concern in Germany about anti-Semitism. Josef Schuster, the head of Germany's Central Council of Jews, told broadcaster Radioeins Tuesday that wearing a skullcap is right in principle, but that he was advising individuals "against showing themselves openly with a kippa in a big-city setting in Germany, and wear a baseball cap or something else to cover their head instead." Schuster suggested three years ago that Jews shouldn't wear skullcaps in areas with large Muslim populations. ...
