Baltimore, MD - Feb. 29, 2024 -  Several mayoral candidates want to put the brakes on Baltimore's bike lanes. "They need to be removed," insisted Wendell Freeman, a Democratic vying for the mayor's seat. "I think we need to rethink where we place these," said former mayor Sheila Dixon, who's also vying to regain the city's top job. Bike lanes have come under fire recently in communities where residents insist they had no input. In some neighborhoods, bike lanes have replaced vehicular lanes creating blocks of congested traffic. "We really do need to have some balance," said Republican Shannon Wright who's also vying for the mayor's seat. Outside a mayoral forum in West Baltimore Wednesday night, some candidates called for a moratorium on bike lanes....
Baltimore, MD - Feb. 29, 2024  - According to the study, 23 percent of below-basic third grade readers will likely drop out of high school. For comparison, nine percent of children with basic reading skills and four percent of proficient readers will likely drop out of high school. The report then looked at Maryland’s prison population and found 57 percent of inmates under age 25 were high school dropouts. “We want to make sure that we can get as many of our third graders reading by the end of the year as possible,” said Mitchell. If that’s the goal, the question then becomes, how is it accomplished? Dr. Carey Wright was appointed Interim State Superintendent of Schools by the Maryland State Board of Education in October 2023. The report then looked ...
On Thursday, Mayor Brandon Scott announced that the City of Baltimore joined a statewide settlement with Walmart to resolve claims regarding its role in the opioid crisis. The City's portion of the settlement is estimated to be just over $7.2 million. The City declined to sign onto the remaining global settlements in which Maryland agreed to participate, City officials say.
"The opioid epidemic, which was directly brought on by corporate greed and irresponsibility, has been disastrous for our great city and has plagued communities across the country,” said Mayor Brandon M. Scott. “Walmart has reached this settlement in an effort to rectify the damage it has done, and with these funds, our City will be able to invest more in addressing the ongoing problem of ...
Dodging potholes could become a sport in Maryland, which ties with New Jersey to rank No. 8 in the country for axle-jarring craters, according to a new analysis of Google searches for pothole-related terms from USA Today. Potholes are formed when the top layer of pavement and the sub-base beneath can no longer support the weight of traffic. Small cracks expand over time, allowing water to seep in. Hitting a pothole can result in expensive repairs that insurance won’t always cover. USA Today based its analysis on Google Trends data from 2020 to 2023 for terms such as “pothole,” “potholes,” “pothole repair,” “pothole damage” and “pothole complaint.” Each term was given a search index number, which was then us...
Defense Minister Yoav Gallant visited northern Gaza today (Thursday) and commented on the IDF's readiness to engage in an operation in Hamas' last stronghold in Rafah. “We are closing in on Hamas. We are preparing to act in Rafah, as well as in the central camps, in order to reach the next stage which we will decide according to our priorities,” Gallant said. He added, “We use the information we captured from the Hamas archives. There are huge amounts of information that we brought from the places we reached, computers, hard drives, servers and other things. All this information is decoded, it is used in order to destroy the tunnels and the nerve centers of Hamas." Gallant also said that "the network of tunnels that Hamas built is now being used by us in orde...
New York Attorney General Letitia James said she is investigating the recent cell service outage that hit thousands of AT&T customers last week. "Americans rely on cell service providers for consistent and reliable service to help them with nearly every aspect of their daily lives," James said. "Nationwide outages are not just an inconvenience, they can be dangerous, and it's critical that we protect consumers when an outage occurs." James encouraged affected New Yorkers to file a complaint with her office. James said her office will investigate the causes of the outage as well as AT&T's response. AT&T has apologized for the incident, which left people around the country without cellphone service for hours. A company spokesman said last week that the outage was c...
A survey conducted by the Anti-Defamation League's Anti-Semitism Research Center found that the number of Americans who hold antisemitic opinions has increased to 24 percent, a rise from 20 percent in 2022. According to the data, 27 percent of Americans think it is acceptable, at least to some extent, for a close family member to support Hamas, and 24 percent of Americans have a friend or close family member who does not like Jews. The study also confirmed that accepting conspiracy theories is one of the main predictors of antisemitic attitudes and beliefs. Researchers found that one third (33 perce...
Two weeks ago, a New York judge ordered Donald Trump to pay a huge penalty of $355 million plus interest — a grand total of more than $450 million — after finding him liable for fraudulently inflating his wealth. But now that it’s time to produce such an amount, Trump’s legal team is undercutting both his and their own claims about his ability to do so. In a filing Wednesday, Trump’s lawyers asked for a delay and offered to post a bond of just $100 million rather than the full amount. They called the full amount a “facially absurd” judgment and added that its terms preventing him from obtaining loans “make it impossible to secure and post a complete bond.” Posting cash or a bond in the full amount is required with...
A federal judge has blocked Texas from enforcing a new law that would make illegal immigration a state crime. Federal judge David Ezra on Thursday granted a preliminary injunction that will block Texas' SB4 from taking effect next week. The law would allow state authorities to arrest and jail illegal immigrants, and would give state judges the power to order deportations.  In his ruling, the judge wrote that states "may not exercise immigration enforcement power except as authorized by the federal government."
The White House responded to the incident this morning (Thursday) in which dozens of Gazans were trampled as they swarmed trucks delivering humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip. Calling the trampling a "serious incident," the US National Security Council stated that “the loss of innocent life and recognize the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, where innocent Palestinians are just trying to feed their families.” It further stated that the incident “underscores the importance of expanding and sustaining the flow of humanitarian assistance into Gaza, including through a potential temporary ceasefire. We continue to work day and night to achieve that outcome.” The IDF on Thursday reported that as aid trucks were brought into northern Gaza on Thursday morning, Gaza...
With Purim approaching, the Pesach travel season is just around the corner. Tens of thousands of US citizens who reside in Israel may be considering traveling Stateside to visit family for the holiday. Embassy staff went above and beyond by assisting US citizens who recently welcomed newborns.  Families gathered at Chaim V’Chessed offices in Har Chotzvim for a streamlined process to apply for their infants’ first-time passports and Consular Reports of Birth Abroad within the comfort of their community.  In advance of Pesach, the US Embassy continues to ex...
