Annapolis, MD - Mar. 24, 2023 - The Maryland Senate voted this morning to fund the $10 million state budget allocation for the BOOST (Broadening Options & Opportunities for Students Today) program, a nonpublic school scholarship initiative. The House of Delegates had previously approved their budget containing a 20% reduction to the program and to prevent scholarships from going to new students. The Senate's decision is seen as a significant step forward in supporting BOOST, which helped over 3,000 students attend 200 nonpublic schools in Maryland in 2022-23 (including 1,100 in Jewish schools). The Book of VaYikra, introducing the full gamut of laws as they pertain to most elevated service of the various offerings in the Mishkan, begins with a simple summons: ויקרא — And He called, אל משה — to Moshe, and G-d spoke to him from the Tent of Meeting, saying, going on to teach the details of these laws.

For many people, the commencement of Sefer Vayikra marks a distinct departure in the Torah from the telling of the history of the world and our becoming an Am, to the more technical details of the Avodas Hamishkan and Korbanos. Indeed, without a Bais Hamikdash, it is all too easy to “read through” much of the Sefer as not relevant to our place in Galus. After all, what possible use could we have for learning the difference between a Korban Tamid and a Korban Mincha or the precise method in which a Kohen was to sprinkle the blood from an offering? Baltimore, MD - Mar. 23, 2023 - Please note that effective December 2022, STAR-K changed the status of the entire line of Ceres 100% Juice from "STAR-K Kosher for Passover" to STAR-K for year-round use only. This was due to a change in a processing aid used by the manufacturer that does not meet STAR-K's standards for Pesach.
Consumers who find containers of Ceres Juice on store shelves bearing a STAR-K P symbol should note that while these items are no longer certified Kosher for Passover according to STAR-K standards, they are halachically Kosher for Pesach.
New productions of Ceres Juice will bear only a STAR-K symbol.

Baltimore, MD - Mar. 23, 2023 - Six construction workers killed in a crash on I-695 Wednesday have been identified by the police. All were contracted highway employees working on the inner loop near Security Boulevard in Woodlawn. Lisa Adrienna Lea, 54, lost control of her vehicle after hitting another while changing lanes, subsequently crashing into the construction zone and killing the workers. Lea is currently hospitalized at Shock Trauma, and it is unconfirmed whether speed was a factor. The Baltimore County State's Attorney is reviewing the case to determine if criminal charges should be filed.

Baltimore City Council president Nick Mosby believes the city should look at day laborers to fill some vacant city jobs.
It's been more than a year since city sanitation had to roll back services like weekly recycling.
Mosby told C4 and Bryan Nehman on Thursday that he endorses the bill to use day laborers to fill up to 700 vacancies at five different agencies, including the Department of Public Works, to help collect recycling and trash.
He also noted that this would be a temporary fix.
A city-commissioned study last year found the agency is short about 100 workers.
At a hearing on Wednesday, department heads and labor union officials cited concerns over training and liability issues with using day workers.

Antisemitic incidents in the United States have reached the highest level ever recorded, according to a study by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL).
Cases surged to historic levels in 2022. There were 3,697 incidents reported across the US last year, an increase of 36 percent compared to 2021, which was also a record-setting year.
According to new data released this week in ADL’s Audit of Antisemitic Incidents, on average, 10 incidents took place for each day in 2022 – the highest level of antisemitic activity since ADL started keeping records in 1979.
The trend follows an uptick of “hate and vitriol directed against the American Jewish community over the last five years,” ADL noted.

Georgia senators saved a measure to include the IHRA definition of antisemitism in the sate’s hate crimes law on Thursday, after it failed to pass the state Senate earlier in the week.
The bill had been removed by its co-sponsors, state Reps. Esther Panitch and John Carson, after the Senate Judiciary Committee adopted an amendment from Senator Ed Setzler on Monday that altered the IHRA definition of antisemitism, replacing it with an explanation of antisemitism that defined discrimination against Jews as only the “negative perception of Jews instead of a ‘certain’ perception.'”
