President Biden slammed antisemitism last week at a White House-hosted “United We Stand” summit against hate crimes, but he is being accused by some Orthodox Jewish leaders of excluding them from the event. The Rev. Al Sharpton requested the summit after the May massacre of 10 black shoppers in Buffalo, and it brought together hundreds of activists and community leaders from minority groups. But Orthodox Jews, who suffer a large number of hate crimes, struggled to make the cut. Orthodox Jewish Chamber of Commerce CEO Duvi Honig told The Post he tried to RSVP, contacting three Biden staffers and even brandishing an endorsement from the New Jersey Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy’s office to be honored as a Uniter — an award bestowed to 16 peopl...

Agudath Israel of California hails the passage of AB 1664,The California Nonprofit Security Bill. The bill makes several important changes to the state’s nonprofit security grant program including removing the 2025 sunset, and increasing the maximum grant level from $200,000 to $500,000 per institution. The bill originally included a unique clause that would have allowed nonprofit communal organizations to obtain grants for communal security infrastructure such as patrol vehicles, communal communications equipment, and training for institutions and volunteers. Unfortunately that clause was removed after the bill initially cleared the Legislature at the behest of the Governor’s office. Agudath Israel has been assured however, that the issue will be brought back in some form...

Dear Friend: Urge Congress to extend school lunches for all students. We reach out to you now because a small window of opportunity has opened to help our families and school children. During COVID, we fought for USDA waivers. For decades, Agudath Israel has made it a priority to help our community participate in federal child nutrition programs, including school-based meals. We worked especially hard during the COVID 19 pandemic – both in Washington and the states — to make sure that the USDA would be authorized to provide waivers that opened up school nutrition programs to millions of families, including tens of thousands in our own schools. Indeed, the kosher “food boxes” that had become a staple in many communities across the country proved to be a vital li...
Canada's federal government will likely drop its COVID-19 vaccine requirement for people entering Canada at the end of the month, a government source said on Tuesday. The source, who was not authorized to speak on the record, said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was "likely" to drop the vaccination requirement on Sept 30. The Globe and Mail newspaper reported the news earlier on Tuesday. Canada will also drop random coronavirus testing on the same day, and make it optional to use its ArriveCAN app, where travelers have been required to upload their proof of vaccination, the source said. Canadian airports faced chaos over the summer, with numerous cancellations and delays that some blamed on the country's strict COVID-19 restrictions. read more

Rehoboth Beach Police are investigating antisemitic flyers found outside hundreds of homes.  The hateful flyers came in small bags, filled partially with corn kernels. The flyers contain messages blaming Jewish politicians for civic issues. The Rehoboth Beach Police Department says over 300 bags were distributed.  Community members are disturbed by the hate speech. Many say, this is not typical for an open and accepting community like Rehoboth Beach.  While people are dismayed by the flyers, Rabbi Sholom Vogel of the Chabad of Southern Delaware, says he plans to fight back with love and kindness.  "You cannot fight darkness with a stick. You can only light a candle and the darkness will disappear," said Vogel.  One Rehoboth Beach resident, St...

New York, NY – Dianne Lob, Chair, and William Daroff, CEO, of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, issued the following statement: “We are outraged, but unfortunately hardly surprised, by Iranian President Raisi’s dishonest and dangerous call for ‘research’ to determine the truth of the Holocaust. “We condemn President Raisi’s flagrant attempt to distort and minimize the impact of the Holocaust, particularly egregious as Jewish communities around the world begin to prepare for the High Holy Days of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. “Raisi’s deceitful questioning and factual distortions of the historical record of the Holocaust, which resulted in the murder of six million Jews, demonstrates his deep-seated a...

About a quarter of a million people saw Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin as she lay in state for four days at Westminster Hall in central London, according to preliminary figures released by the British government. Members of the public wanting to pay their final respects after the queen’s death on Sept. 8 had to stand in a line – or queue – that grew so long over four days that wait times reached 24 hours at one point. The end of the line even had to be temporarily closed, but all that did was create a queue for the queue. Initial estimates suggest that more than 250,000 people went through the parliamentary building to see the queen’s coffin, Culture Secretary Michelle Donelan told British broadcasters early Tuesday. While some who entered Westminster Hall were...
The Baltimore Police Department is one step away from changing its district boundaries for the first time in decades. On Monday, the City Council voted to move forward on a third and final reading to implement the changesBaltimore City Councilman Yitzy Schleifer commented: "This first police redistricting in 50 years is a great step forward ensuring equitable distribution of police resources. This redistricting also unifies communities into the same police districts to more effectively address crime trends." The department's goal is to balance the workload in each district, which in turn could improve call response times. As part of the new map, 18 neighborhoods previously divided would be reunited. Once approved, the new boundaries could go into effect as early as next year. ...
1. Rabbi Yisrael Meir HaKohen Kagan, who passed away 89 years ago today, was a highly esteemed rabbinical leader and teacher who came to the conclusion that insufficient attention had been paid to one especially critical area of daily living: the content of our speech. He wrote "Chofetz Chaim" (and was subsequently known by that name), a book whose title was taken from words in Psalm 34: "Are you someone who desires life, who loves days of seeing goodness? Guard your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceitfully." (Chofetz Chaim means 'one who desires life.')2. His students emphasized that he was extremely careful regarding the laws of gossip and lashon hara (insulting or negative speech) and yet, perhaps surprisingly, he was not a quiet person. He proved that it'...
