I was thinking of the following question: Who is the number one fan? Is it the spectator in the stadium who is yelling the loudest? Or maybe it’s the spectator who is wearing the most face paint? Or perhaps it’s the spectator who buys the best seats? This leads me to another question. Oftentimes at a sports game, all of the fans will be given that classic foam glove that is shaped like a finger which says “#1 Fan”. Now, is it really plausible to suggest that each of the thousands of fans are all the number one fan? How is this possible? If guy A is the number one fan, how can guy B be the number one fan?  I think the answer is as follows. Being the number one fan is not based on a global rating system; but rather, the barometer for the number one fan is based ...
Are we eagerly looking forward to tomorrow, anticipating the redemption and the universal kindness it will bring, or are we solely preoccupied with worst case future scenarios?  When the highly emotional and joyful moment arrived after the splitting of the Red Sea and the Song of the Sea was sung, it is told that Miriam the prophetess immediately pulled out a tambourine: "Miriam, the prophetess, Aaron's sister, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women came out after her with tambourines and with dances."Wait a minute. From where did Miriam’s tambourine suddenly appear? It is clear that Miriam did not have to rummage around in her suitcase looking for it. It was already with her, right by her side, because she had been expecting this moment for years. She had also ed...
As I am privileged this week to walk, together with my wife, my son Mutti down to his chuppah, I would like to take this opportunity to share some of my personal feelings at this exciting time. Many have the custom to stand up for the chosson and kallah as they approach the chuppah. There is no identified source for this. Some suggest it is based on the notion of chosson domeh l'melech — a groom is compared to a king, and thus deserving of honor. The great Talmudist, philosopher, and master teacher, the ineffable Rav Yosef Dov Soloveitchik, famed Rosh Hayeshiva of Yeshiva University, pondered aloud this question. He discounted the analogy to a king since it is only after the act of kiddushin that he first becomes a 'chosson'. He touchingly suggested that perhaps it...
Busted smoke alarms. Broken ovens. Mold and malfunctioning exhaust fans. Those are among the horrors identified by city inspectors during recent reviews of apartments in a Bronx housing tower before it became the scene of the deadliest fire in a generation in New York City, records reviewed by The Post show. At least 17 people — including eight children — perished Sunday after a space heater sparked a fire that flooded the 19-story complex at 333 East 181th St. with deadly smoke. The decrepit conditions were documented and ordered fixed by the New York City Housing Authority, which was tasked by federal regulations with inspecting 12 of the 120 units in the building because it provided those tenants with rent vouchers.
The partnership allows researchers to access Yad Vashem’s Pages of Testimony data when doing a search on the JewishGen website, which includes nearly 3.8 million Holocaust records. New York City’s Museum of Jewish Heritage–A Living Memorial to the Holocaust and its genealogy affiliate JewishGen has announced a new partnership with Yad Vashem that will enable the public to gain more access to genealogical records. “By making available these precious records via JewishGen, the broader Jewish community can more easily research names of family and friends who were murdered during the Holocaust,” said Museum of Jewish Heritage president and CEO Jack Kliger. “The agreement facilitates access to the resources of our museum and Yad Vashem, two of t...
White House press secretary Jen Psaki admitted Thursday that President Joe Biden was “not the most effective messenger” when it came to convincing unvaccinated Americans to take the coronavirus vaccine shot. It was not the first time Psaki had noted that many Americans did not take their health advice from the president — and that some Americans would be inclined to ignore him for political reasons — but she stressed the importance of vaccination in any case. Asked whether the White House had any “evidence” or “sound basis” for believing that Biden could succeed in urging the unvaccinated to change their minds, Psaki said that “more than 80% of the country has gotten at least one dose.” She added:
What the presid...
The constantly rising shipping costs from overseas and even domestically are partially responsible for the soaring kosher food prices in the US. European Jews have also been shocked at the rising prices and of late the price increases are being felt in Israel. Israeli food manufacturer and distributor Osem is raising the prices of its products by an average of 4.6%. In a letter sent to retailers, Nestle unit Osem reported that it is hiking the prices of its products 3% and 7%. "This rise partially covers the major price rises of inputs and shipping," the company said. It continued: "As you know, we have seen strong price rises globally for many months in raw material and packaging, prices and shipping costs. These are real price rises of tens of percentages (durum wheat 90%, coffee bea...
First Lieutenant N., commander of the Egoz staff who accidentally fired at two IDF officers, has not managed to sleep since the incident, and is suffering great mental turmoil. On Wednesday evening, two company commanders in the IDF's Egoz Unit, Major Ofek Aharon, 28, from Gan Yavneh, and Major Itamar Elharar, 26, from Bnei Re'em, were killed by friendly fire in the Jordan Valley. In an interview with Yediot Aharonot, it was reported that despite N.'s anguish and mental state, he succeeded in attending one of the funerals, thanks to support and aid from his unit and commanders. "I was sure that they were terrorists," N. told those close to him on Thursday. "I felt a danger, I was afraid, so I fired."
Baltimore, MD - Jan. 14, 2022 - 10:37AM - Here we go. Yet another impactful winter storm headed our way! And this one is going to have major impacts to our area. As we discussed earlier, there were 2 possible outcomes. An inland track, and a coastal track. At this point, its looking more and more likely that we will have an inland track, with the center of low pressure riding up I-95. This will bring us a mixed bag of precipitation, with heavy snow to start, then switching to sleet and freezing rain, and eventually over to plan rain. Snow should start between 3 and 5PM Sunday for central Maryland, before transitioning to sleet and freezing rain for a few hours after about 8-10PM. Then plain rain through early Monday, before potentially switching back to a mix or snow again late M...

Across Baltimore, city recycling is piling up block after city block. “On a routine basis collections are being missed,” Councilman Yitzy Schleifer said. Councilman Yitzy Schleifer is expressing frustration with DPW. The agency announced Wednesday that recycling collection will now only occur every other week amid a staffing shortage. “It’s very frustrating. This is the most basic city service that is supposed to be provided and for that to be routinely missed by the agency that has the largest budget in the city is just unacceptable,” he said. The councilman says the problem has been going on for months. “COVID-19 is the go-to excuse, but this is more than just a COVID-19 issue. This is a failure of leadership on every level at DPW,” he said. D...
A Jewish employee has filed a complaint against his former employer, claiming that he was forced to remove his yarmulka during work. He says that the firm allegedly gave him the anti-Jewish instructions, after getting a complaint from a client he was training. Golan Levy, of London, is a martial arts expert and safety instructor. HIs employer, Securitas UK, a British security firm, allegedly told him to remove his head covering while training clients over Zoom. In addition, he says that they told him to remove an Israeli flag that could be seen in the background during sessions. The Krav Maga expert who is also an Israeli citizen, accused the firm of discrimination and hired lawyers to file a grievance over the matter. Mr. Levy reportedly got in touch with a local watchdog, the ...
Beth Medrash Govoha will reportedly be purchasing a property that belongs to the nearby Georgian Court University in Lakewood, NJ. The goal of the purchase is to build low-cost housing for yungeleit. The purchase of 44 acres of land by the country’s largest yeshiva will still leave the college with the majority of its 150+ acre campus. The plan is to build about a dozen buildings and about 500 apartments on the site. Georgian Court University is set on a magnificent 156-acre estate formerly belonging to financier George Jay Gould. After a long history as a women’s college with coeducational graduate programs and undergraduate evening programs, Georgian Court became fully coeducational in 2013.
A subvariant of the Omicron variant of COVID-19, known as BA2, has arrived in Israel and 20 cases of it have already been detected in the country, Kan 11 News reported on Thursday. According to the report, BA2 is currently known to have even more mutations than the original Omicron, and as such, some scientists around the world have speculated that it may be more violent. However, at the moment this is only a hypothesis, and it is important to note that there is no absolute certainty and knowledge about this. The subspecies was first seen in China a few weeks ago. The suspicion is that it originated in India. It has also been located in Denmark, Australia, Canada, and Singapore. Israeli scientists told Kan 11 News that they are concerned by the variant because of its ...
The Republican National Committee (RNC) alerted the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) on Thursday that it plans to require GOP presidential nominees not to attend debates run by the commission going forward.  "The RNC will initiate the process of amending the Rules of the Republican Party at our upcoming Winter Meeting to prohibit future Republican nominees from participating in CPD-sponsored debates," wrote Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel in the letter, which was obtained by The Hill.  McDaniel said GOP voters "have lost trust" in the commission and noted that the RNC has proposed a number of reforms to the debate process. "Unfortunately, neither the tone nor substance of your latest response inspires confidence that the CPD will meaningfully address the serious is...
