The Har Habayis – and the area around Al-Aqsa Mosque – proved to be a flashpoint again Sunday, as the Islamist Ra’am faction – a member of Israel’s governing coalition – condemned the hundreds of Jewish worshipers who ascended to the site.
“The Al-Aqsa Mosque, in its 144 dunams, is solely the property of Muslims, and no one else has any right to it,” the Islamist party said in a joint statement with its parent organization, the Islamic Movement, reported The Times of Israel (TOI).
According to the status quo, the Waqf, the Jordanian Islamic religious authority has responsibility for the site, which has been in force since Israel decided after the Six Day War in 1967 to not assert its rights over the Har Habayis. Any Jewish presence at ...

Nikki Haley, the former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. during the first two years of the Trump administration, cautioned the Biden administration against returning to the nuclear deal with Iran, in a speech to supporters of Israel on Sunday.
Iran’s prime goal, by funding its proxies in the Middle East region, is to target the U.S. and destroy the state of Israel, Haley said in remarks at the annual Christians United for Israel leadership summit in Dallas, Texas. “Iran is the sugar daddy of Hamas. The 11-day war that Israel just fought, wasn’t just with Hamas,” she added. “Israel was fighting against Iranian weapons, Iranian money and Iranian trained terrorists, and everyone knows it.”
Haley urged the Biden administration to change course in its diplomatic...

Gov. Andrew Cuomo used campaign funds to pay the attorney representing him in his harassment case despite previously stating that he would use state financing to pay for his legal fees.
Cuomo’s reelection campaign, “Andrew Cuomo for New York,” gave Glavin PLLC, a New York-based law firm, $111,774 on May 3 and $173,098 on June 2, according to disclosures released by New York’s Board of Elections on Friday. That same June day, Cuomo told reporters that he would use taxpayer funding rather than campaign finances for his legal defense amid the New York State Assembly’s “impeachment investigation” into claims of harassment against the governor.
It was estimated in early June that Cuomo’s legal defense could cost New York taxpayers up to $2....

The Biden administration is moving forward with a plan to drop a Trump-era rule that sought to loosen restrictions on showerhead water flow – something the former president was known to complain about.
The Energy Department announced on Friday that it is taking a step toward reversing the Trump administration’s move in order to tighten showerhead efficiency regulations.
Officials said they will propose a rule reinstating the 2013 definition of “showerhead,” which the Trump administration changed. The Trump rule from late last year sought to bypass a requirement allowing no more than 2.5 gallons to flow through a showerhead per minute.
In products containing multiple showerheads, each is considered separately under...

Health experts, including an influential group of pediatricians, are pushing back on federal guidance that vaccinated Americans can go without masks, warning that the honor system has failed to keep many people safe in the face of the delta variant.
The American Academy of Pediatrics on Monday called for schools to enforce universal masking mandates because so many kids won’t be protected by fall and schools have no way of verifying COVID vaccine status yet.
"AAP recommends universal masking because a significant portion of the student population is not yet eligible for vaccines, and masking is proven to reduce transmission of the virus and to protect those who are not vaccinated,” the AAP wrote in a statement. “Many schools will not have a system to monitor vacci...

Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked said in an interview with Channel 13 News tonight (Monday) that "isolation for all returnees from all countries will probably be approved. We are still debating whether it will be for seven or four days." The minister clarified that the government prefers that people fly less.
Shaked called on people to get vaccinated and added: "Among the vaccinated there are fewer critically ill patients. My children, aged 13 and 16, have also been vaccinated. Our strategy is to live with the coronavirus with the help of vaccines, masks and the green pass. We are conducting epidemiological investigations and monitoring the sewer in order to reduce the rate of infection."
When asked what the government's plans are for Khan al-Ahmar, Shaked said, "I think th...

Activists, journalists and politicians around the world have been spied on using cellphone malware developed by a private Israeli firm, reports said Sunday.
The use of the software, called Pegasus and developed by Israel’s NSO group, was reported on by the Washington Post, the Guardian, Le Monde and other news outlets who collaborated on an investigation into a data leak.
The leak was of a list of up to 50,000 phone numbers believed to have been identified as people of interest by clients of NSO since 2016, the reports said. Not all of those numbers were subsequently hacked.
Among the numbers on the list are those of journalists from some of the world’s leading new agencies and publications.
Also on the list were two numbers belonging to women close to&n...

The Biden administration Monday removed its first detainee from Guantanamo Bay, sending a man back to Morocco who had first been recommended for discharge in 2016 but who remained in the Cuba prison through former President Donald Trump’s time in office.
Abdul Latif Nasser, 56, was transferred to custody in Morocco, leaving 39 prisoners at the prison, reports The New York Times. The transfer marks the renewed efforts, that had been pursued under former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama but slowed under Trump, to thin the prison’s population
Eleven of the remaining prisoners at the facility have been charged with war crimes. At its peak over the almost 20 years since the Sept. 11, 2011 attacks and during the invasion of Afghanistan, the prison, at ...

Foreign Minister Yair Lapid says there is no change to the longstanding religious arrangements on Har Habayis, under which only Muslims may pray at the site.
“There is no change to the status quo on the Gar Habayis. We’ve clarified this to the Jordanians,” says Lapid. The Jordanian Waqf are the official custodians of the site.
His comments come after sources in the Prime Minister’s Office told Army Radio that Prime Minister Naftali Bennett had misspoken on Sunday when he said both Jews and Muslims have “freedom of worship” on Har Habayis, which would be a potentially explosive change after decades of Jews being permitted only to visit, but not daven, there.

Two South African soccer players have become the first athletes inside the Olympic Village to test positive for COVID-19, with the Tokyo Games opening on Friday.
Organizers confirmed the positive tests on Sunday but didn’t identify the athletes other than to say they were non-Japanese. The South African Football Association later confirmed there were three COVID-19 cases in its delegation — two players and a video analyst.
Organizers also said Sunday that another athlete had tested positive but this person was not residing in the Olympic Village. This athlete was also identified as “non-Japanese.”
Also on Sunday, the first International Olympic Committee member was reported as positive. He recorded a positive test on Saturday upon entering a Tokyo airport.

The long wait will soon be over for foreigners who have been banned from entering Canada for nearly 16 months.
Beginning Aug. 9, fully vaccinated citizens and permanent residents of the U.S. that are currently residing in the U.S. will be permitted to enter Canada. Non-essential travel into Canada has been banned since March 2020, something the Canadian government said was necessary to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
International travelers may also be allowed to enter Canada beginning Sept. 7, provided that the "COVID-19 epidemiology remains favorable," the Canadian government said in statement released Monday.
Entry to Canada will continue to be prohibited for all foreign travelers who are not fully vaccinated.

The Egged bus company has reported 11 rock-throwing attacks on its buses in Yerushalayim on Tisha B’av, mostly around Shaar Shechem, the Ynet news site reports.
The assaults injured one person, who was hospitalized with a head injury, the report says. A number of buses suffered shattered windows and other damage.
Egged chairman Avi Friedman brands the uptick in stone-throwing “a real terror attack that was premeditated with the aim of harming visitors to the Kosel and deterring them.”
