U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration announced Tuesday it was restoring relations with the Palestinians and renewing aid to Palestinian refugees, a reversal of the Trump administration’s cutoff and a key element of its new support for a two-state solution to the decades-old conflict between Israelis and Palestinians.
Acting U.S. Ambassador Richard Mills made the announcement of Biden’s approach to a high-level virtual Security Council meeting, saying the new U.S. administration believes this “remains the best way to ensure Israel’s future as a democratic and Jewish state while upholding the Palestinians’ legitimate aspirations for a state of their own and to live with dignity and security.”

President Joe Biden on Tuesday ordered the Department of Justice (DOJ) to phase out its use of private prisons.
The executive order, signed alongside three others as part of an effort to address racial inequality, largely returns the department to the policy adopted under the Obama administration.
“To decrease incarceration levels, we must reduce profit-based incentives to incarcerate by phasing out the federal government’s reliance on privately operated criminal detention facilities,” Biden wrote in the order.

A newly released study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows COVID-19 spread in schools appears to be low, suggesting in-person learning might be safe if proper procedures are in place.
The study, released Tuesday, was made among 17 rural Wisconsin schools, grades K-12, from Aug. 31-Nov. 29.

A U.S. Capitol rioter accused of stealing the laptop of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., could be banned from internet access after allegedly attempting to destroy evidence.
Riley Williams, 22, was arrested a week ago in Central Pennsylvania, according to the Justice Department.
At a court hearing Monday, officials said Williams might have, or could have, deleted online messages and accounts, per the Daily Mail.

A number of pro-Trump rioters who stormed the Capitol wore clothing with anti-Semitic messages—the latest sign of a growing problem in America.

MARYLAND — As the federal government works to ramp up production of the COVID-19 vaccine, Gov. Larry Hogan said the state is preparing before the supply arrives.
About 2 million people are now eligible to receive the vaccine in Maryland, and there is not enough of the vaccine for everyone.
Maryland is taking measures "to push the federal government for more vaccines" and leveraging every resource "to get shots into arms as quickly as possible," Hogan said, "and we will not rest until the vaccine is available to every Marylander who wants one."
Over 100 providers are offering the vaccine in Maryland, including pharmacies, hospitals and health care provider clinics, the governor said.

Johnson & Johnson said Tuesday that it is on track to meet its target of 100 million coronavirus vaccine doses for the United States by the end of June, one of a string of confident announcements on vaccine supply.
Johnson & Johnson is being closely watched as a potential third vaccine for the U.S., helping further an increase in available doses. The company said Tuesday that it expects results from its Phase 3 trial “by early next week.”
If the vaccine proves to be safe and effective and is authorized in the coming weeks, the company’s chief financial officer, Joseph Wolk, told CNBC: “We’re very confident and on track to meet all of our commitments, which would include 100 million doses to the U.S. by the end of June.”

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is releasing some more information about its increasing role in COVID-19 vaccination efforts, though it is not yet saying where it will be setting up federal vaccination centers.
FEMA announced Monday that it would be reimbursing states, territories and tribal governments for the use of National Guard troops to respond to the pandemic and plans to expedite reimbursement for eligible emergency projects such as leasing facilities or equipment to administer or store vaccines.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) indicated on Monday night that power-sharing talks could move forward after two Democrats reiterated they would not nix the 60-vote legislative filibuster.
