A French court on Thursday sentenced a 19-year-old Deliveroo courier to four months in prison on discrimination charges after he refused to deliver meals from Jewish restaurants.
Two restaurant owners in the eastern city of Strasbourg filed complaints last week after alleging the courier canceled delivery orders after learning they were for "Israeli food."
One of the owners told the court that the man said "I don't deliver to Jews."

We had all hoped that 2021 would be different. We hoped that the violence and discord which was so prominent last year would not follow us into this new one. But alas, infighting has reared its ugly head in the first weeks of this new year. It is over a week since the violent protest in our nation’s capital, and it still seems surreal. The images, the violence seem like scenes from a distant land. But yet, it was here, just an hour away. There has been much commentary and blame. But is there something to be learned? Is there a lesson? Or is this simply another dark chapter for our great nation? I would like to share some thoughts and insights as I grapple with these events.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority will close more than a dozen stations around the National Mall and U.S. Capitol Building in the days before and after Joe Biden's inauguration, the system announced Thursday.
Beginning Friday, Jan. 15, Metro will close 13 stations inside the a perimeter designated as security, with 11 stations closing on Friday and two additional stations on Saturday.
Until Thursday, Jan. 21, trains will pass through those stations without stoping.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Health Minister Yuli Edelstein visited the Maccabi Health Services vaccination center in the city of Ramla this evening (Thursday), and were photographed with the two millionth person to be vaccinated: Margaret El Soso, an assistant at a kindergarten in Ramla.
Netanyahu said that "if we all make sure to follow the rules and sign up for vaccination, we will be the first country to leave this situation behind. We will shorten the lockdown as much as possible, but we will need cooperation."

The number of Americans filing for first-time unemployment aid last week jumped to the highest level since mid-August, the latest sign the economy's recovery is stalling amid a surge in COVID-19 infections nationwide.
Figures released Thursday by the Labor Department show 965,000 Americans filed first-time jobless claims in the week ended Jan. 9, higher than the 795,000 forecast by Refinitiv economists.
The number is nearly four times the pre-crisis level but is well below the peak of almost 7 million that was reached when stay-at-home orders were first issued in March. Almost 70 million Americans, or about 40% of the labor force, have filed for unemployment benefits during the pandemic.
