The Zohar depicts the nature of our celebration of the holiday of Sukkos as children who shelter themselves in the warmth of their mother’s protective embrace.   This relationship is referred to as the אמא עילאה — the Higher Mother.   The saintly Reb Mordechai of Neshchiz explains, that this intimates man’s ability to repent from his sins, finding refuge ‘in the apron strings of his mother’, from those who seek to persecute him.  But isn’t Teshuva an erasure of one’s past misdeeds through meaningful regret and repentance, without any need to ‘escape’ the intentions of those who seek to harm him?  After the sin of partaking from the Tree of Knowledge, the Torah enumerates a series of curses that will befal...
[Ed. Note] Out of the respect and recognition of the impact made by longtime BJL friend and contributor, Reb Shaya Gross, z’l, we will maintain a living memoriam to Shaya through the sweet words and thoughtful insights of  his Divrei Torah. BJL readers will remember his weekly column on the Parsha and on various Torah ideas and concepts. These meaningful words will help us remember this special young man who will be sorely missed and for those who did not merit to know him, this will be the most appropriate way for them to become familiar with who he was. On each of the six days of creation [with the exception of the second day; see the commentaries as to why], the Torah says "and G-d saw that it was good." However, at the end of the sixth day, the passuk says "And G-d saw...
NEW YORK (VINnews) — After Twitter’s Jack Dorsey admitted that his company’s attempted suppression of the e-mails sent by Hunter Biden implicating his father as having had business contacts with Ukrainian company Burisma while serving as Vice President responsible for US policy towards the Ukraine was ‘not great’, Fox News’s Tucker Carlson discussed the attempts by the Biden campaign to ignore the story and hide behind the fact that Facebook and Twitter had tried to suppress it.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Thursday that he was wrong not to wear a mask at the White House, after he and President Donald Trump both came down with the coronavirus. Christie, in a statement, said he has recovered from COVID-19 after a week-long stay in a hospital’s intensive care unit. He called on all political leaders to advocate for face-coverings, as the practice has become increasingly politicized even as the pandemic has killed more than 217,000 Americans. “I believed that when I entered the White House grounds, that I had entered a safe zone, due to the testing that and I and many others underwent every day,” Christie said. “I was wrong.” Christie, who was at the White House for the announcement of Judge Amy C...
Wells Fargo & Co. fired more than 100 employees suspected of improperly collecting coronavirus relief funds, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The firm determined that the staffers defrauded the Small Business Administration “by making false representations in applying for coronavirus relief funds for themselves,” according to an internal memo reviewed by Bloomberg. The review focused on employees who tapped the Economic Injury Disaster Loan program, a key part of the government’s effort to prop up businesses during the pandemic. “We have terminated the employment of those individuals and will cooperate fully with law enforcement,” David Galloreese, Wells Fargo’s head of human resources, said in the memo. “These wrongful ...
Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden‘s (D) campaign announced late Wednesday that it had raised a massive $383 million in September, marking the best period for the campaign so far. The figure, announced by Biden and his campaign manager, Jennifer O’Malley Dillon, on Twitter means that the former vice president will go into the remaining weeks of the election with $432 million in the bank, an impressive figure to fund last-minute advertising. “To every person who chipped in a few dollars last month — thank you. Because of your support, we raised an astounding $383 million,” tweeted Biden late Wednesday evening. “I’m incredibly humbled.” Read more at The Hill.
It’s fair to say the coronavirus pandemic has turned many people into TV binge watchers in 2020. For some people however, isolation is leaving them bored and depressed no matter what’s on television. A new study finds there may be a way to cure this boredom and get back in touch with nature, without leaving your couch. Researchers at the University of Exeter find that watching nature programming actually reduces feelings of boredom and sadness. The study examined 96 participants who researchers actively tried to bore before their experiments. To accomplish this, the volunteers watched a video where a person described their work at an office supply company. After being sufficiently fatigued by this dull tale, researchers showed the group scenes of an underwater coral...
Hailing his administration’s response to the global coronavirus pandemic — as his opponent almost entirely focuses its campaign on that issue — President Donald Trump told Newsmax TV, the worst is behind us. “We’ve come up with great therapeutics and cures and all sorts of things,” Trump told Wednesday’s “Greg Kelly Reports” in an exclusive interview, noting the mortality rate is declining and survival rates are going over 99%. “We’ve come up with things that are amazing. The job we’ve done is incredible, and now the vaccines are coming out. We’re rounding the turn, but most people, 99-point-something percent, if you get it, you get better. I got better.” Read more at NEWSMAX.
Bereishis contains many firsts.  For that matter it really contains all firsts.  Central however to all the firsts is the existence of Shabbos.  The Torah tells us “Hashem blessed the seventh day and made it holy because on that day he abstained from all work which he had created to do”.   (Bereishis, 2:3) Interestingly, Shabbos observance is not given as a Mitzvah at that time.  I am unaware of any commentaries or Midrashic sources which indicate that Adam Harishon was commanded to or kept Shabbos.  Moreover, Hashem chose not to include Shabbos observance in the Sheva Mitzvos B’nei Noach.  There are Mepharshim and Gemaras which discuss Avraham Avinu wanting to keep Shabbos but unsure if he was permitted to – If he was a goy, ...
Israel suspended granting of any visas to employees of the United Nations human rights agency, outlet Middle East Eye reported on Thursday. The move effectively compels the body’s top staff to leave the country, the report added. In February, the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) released a “blacklist” of 112 companies with activities in Israeli settlements in the West Bank. In response, Jerusalem announced it was suspending ties with the global body. Read more at i24NEWS.
Israel’s Coronavirus Cabinet lifted Thursday several lockdown restrictions amid the recent decrease in morbidity across the country. As of Sunday, kindergartens, small businesses that receive no costumers, and take away services will reopen. During the meeting, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu branded the country’s second nationwide lockdown a “success,” saying other states are taking Israel as an example for curtailing the virus spread. “Other countries, in Europe in particular, are beginning to talk about it [lockdown] and examine it as morbidity already exceeded us in several countries,” Netanyahu said during a meeting of the Coronavirus Cabinet, outlet Ynet reported. The mainstream media has been involved in its “usual coverup” of the “criminality” of Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden and his family when there is “so much evidence that the Biden family has been taking money illegally for many, many years,” President Donald Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani told Newsmax TV Thursday. “Now we have [Hunter] Biden’s own text messages to his father, to others, which make it clear they were stealing money, taking money from countries like Iraq, Ukraine, China, Romania, don’t forget Moscow, the $3.5 million from Moscow that Biden lied about at the debate,” Giuliani told Newsmax TV’s “National Report.” He also claimed that one of the messages sh...
As we continue on our journey of living with corona,  and the one constant of the  nothing-is-constant  impact on our lives, we also continue to be pleasantly surprised! The Yamim Noraim came and went and ended up being so uplifting!  Then came Succos and celebrating in G-d’s great outdoors with His incredible ever -present kindness and gifting us beautiful weather that certainly enhanced our V’Samachta B’Chagecha!  What about Simchas Torah you ask?   To all those who predicted doom and gloom  of how depressing Simchas Torah of 2020 would be because of the Big “C,” I say, “SURPRISE,” again! All the neighborhood chit chat included  who was doing Where What and When (yes pun intended) which inevitably led...
Baltimore, MD - Oct. 15, 2020: Dear Faculty, Parents and Friends of TA, It is with great excitement that we announce a generous grant award by an anonymous foundation (the rules of the grant do not allow us to release the name yet) to fund the installation of a comprehensive solar power system on TA's campus. We also express our appreciation to TA grandparent, Mrs. ZC Brodie and her son, TA parent Shlomo Brodie from HESP Solar, who have given us constant guidance throughout this process, and have also arranged for the donation of additional solar panels to be able to expand the system beyond the initially planned scope of the project. Lastly, we thank the Weil Mandel Charitable Foundation for funding a portion of the project as well.   This investment ...
Despite national and battleground state polls showing Democratic nominee Joe Biden enjoying a healthy lead over incumbent President Trump, the Biden campaign issued a stark warning to its supporters, saying the race is much closer than people think.
