BALTIMORE — For the third week in a row, new unemployment rates dropped in Maryland.
A total of 13,117 new claims were filed for the week of Aug. 8.
The Maryland Department of Labor reports unemployment claims by type: regular or pandemic related assistance (PUA and PEUC). There were 7,626 regular claims and 5,491 PUA and PEUC claims.
The Unemployment Insurance Claim Center hours have been extended weekdays to 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and claims centers will be open on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon -- call 410-949-0022.
The BEACON One-Stop Online Application website was launched April 24 and has posed problems for many Marylanders since.

Afiw Bkreia lives in the town of Peki’in and works as a park ranger in the national park of Nachal Amud in Israel’s Galilee. He is married with one son and is a volunteer EMT with United Hatzalah. On Tuesday, Afiw was staying late at the park to close up and make sure that all of the visitors had left, due to a recent wave of people getting stranded or lost in the park as a result of summer vacation.

A top federal health official is issuing a dire warning: Follow recommended coronavirus measures or risk having the worst fall in U.S. public health history.
"For your country right now and for the war that we're in against COVID, I'm asking you to do four simple things: wear a mask, social distance, wash your hands and be smart about crowds," said Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"I'm not asking some of America to do it," he told WebMD. "We all gotta do it."
Without following the recommendations, this could be "the worst fall, from a public health perspective, we've ever had," he said. In addition to taking measures to combat the pandemic, people should also get a flu vaccine.

Baltimore Gas and Electric has released more findings into the investigation of a row house explosion that left two dead and seven injured.
The utility released a statement on Thursday morning saying that they have completed the inspection of BGE gas and electric equipment serving the 4200 block of Labyrinth Road in northwest Baltimore.
According to the statement, the utility “found that all of its equipment—gas mains, gas service pipes and gas meters, as well as electric equipment—has been operating safely and was not the cause the natural gas explosion that occurred Aug. 10.”
The statement also says that BGE also looked into customer-owned gas piping and appliances at the scene.

The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits fell below 1 million last week for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic started in mid-March.
The latest jobless claims figures from the Labor Department, which cover the week ending August 8, show that 963,000 workers sought aid last week, pushing the total number since the shutdown began to nearly 56 million.
Economists surveyed by Refinitiv expected 1.12 million new claims.
The figure -- the lowest since March 14, just as the pandemic brought the economy to a grinding halt -- indicates there's still driving power behind the job market's recovery, despite fears that flare-up in COVID-19 cases and a fresh round of business closures would derail ...

Egypt has insisted that Hamas and other terrorist groups in the Gaza Strip cease incendiary balloon attacks on Israel, fearing the situation may spiral out of control.
“Senior Egyptian intelligence officials contacted leaders of Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) and warned them that the continued attacks on Israel could lead to an all-out military confrontation in the Gaza Strip, the sources said,” according to a report in the Jerusalem Post.
There is some speculation that the leaders of the two main groups – Hamas, which runs the Gaza Strip and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) – may be invited for urgent discussions in Cairo, as Egyptian officials attempt to avert a possible war on their border.

Hundreds of protesters in Portland who were arrested in the past 80 days of demonstrations will not face any charges, Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt announced Tuesday.
“The protesters are angry … and deeply frustrated with what they perceive to be structural inequities in our basic social fabric, and this frustration can escalate to levels that violate the law,” Schmidt said. “This policy acknowledges that centuries of disparate treatment of our black and brown communities have left deep wounds and that the healing process will not be easy or quick.”

Baltimore, MD - Aug. 12, 2020 - The last three days have been sad, exhausting, stressful but most of all inspiring. The tragic explosion that left 2 constituents deceased and 7 others critically injured has brought out the absolute best in our community.
I have been out on the scene for 15 hours a day coordinating resources and connecting city agencies to our constituents in need. We have been helping residents get back into their homes to retrieve medications, clothing and other essential personal items.
There have been countless offers for assistance from businesses, religious institutions and people trying to do anything and everything they can to help the victims of this unfathomable incident.

Baltimore fire officials released more information Wednesday about the victims in Monday's explosion in northwest Baltimore.
Just before 10 a.m., fire crews responded to the 4200 block of Labyrinth Road and began clearing debris and rubble once they learned people may have been in the three destroyed homes at the time.
Fire officials said they recovered the body of 61-year-old Lonnie Herriott just before noon Monday and 20-year-old Joseph Graham Jr., previously identified by his family, early Tuesday.
