Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) on Monday defended his opposition to President Trump‘s use of executive orders to address the coronavirus pandemic, hours after the president publicly called the GOP senator out over his criticism. Sasse — in a note tweeted from his campaign account and signed “Gym Rat” — indicated he would rather have the discussion privately with Trump but added “since you moved our conversation from private to public, here we are.” “On the topic that had you mad this weekend: No president — whether named Obama or Trump or Biden or AOC — has unilateral power to rewrite immigration law or to cut taxes or to raise taxes. This is because America doesn’t have kings,” Sasse wrote. Read more at&nbs...

A coalition of 128 organizations has sent an open letter to Facebook’s board of directors calling on the social media giant to officially adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism as a guiding policy on combating online Jew-hatred. The letter noted that Facebook’s director of content policy stakeholder engagement, Peter Stern, “admitted that Facebook does not have a policy aimed at combating online antisemitism” and that the IHRA definition had not been adopted because it included antisemitism related to Israel. The letter pointed out that almost 40 countries, including the US, had adopted the IHRA definition in some form, and “the overwhelming majority of civil society organizations at the forefron...

Parshat Re'eh reviews Jewish dietary laws supplying a sweeping list of banned foods. It catalogues kosher and non-kosher animals, bans the drinking of blood, mentions the prohibition of mixing meat and milk, and also references the procedure of shechita. These comprehensive details regulate the entire experience of eating and dining. In our era, which unfortunately has witnessed a broad decline of full halachik observance, observance of kosher food regulations remains a baseline for religious identity. We often refer to those who observe Shabbat and maintain kashrut as "Orthodox" Jews even as we hope for their adopting a more augmented and expanded religious lifestyle. At first glance, many of the laws of kashrut seem random. Admittedly, the prohibition of drinking blood, is understa...

Even in the campaign, her anti-Semitic proclivities resurfaced when she sent out an election flyer in July accusing her opponent of being “in the pocket of Wall Street” and listing only Jewish donors to his campaign. Rep. Ilhan Omar is facing a surprisingly well-funded challenger in Minnesota’s Democratic primaries on Tuesday. Antone Melton-Meaux, a black lawyer and mediator, raised millions of anti-Omar dollars to fill mailboxes and flood airwaves. His “Focused on the Fifth” message has portrayed Omar, a member of “The Squad” of four progressive female lawmakers, as out of touch with the 5th District. Omar rejected Melton-Meaux’s attacks, saying they were funded by interests that wanted to get her out of Congress because she’s ...
The Torah in Devarim 13:17 tells us that in the event there is a whole city that serves avoda zora, all its belongings will be gathered in the middle of the city and get totally burned. The Gemara in Sanhedrin 71a tells us that Reb Eliezer says that if a city that served avoda zora has even just one house with a mezuzah in it, the city will be saved. This will not render the city an Ir Hanidachas. The reason for this is that even though there is a mitzvah to burn everything in a city that served avoda zora, they are not allowed to burn a mezuzah. The meforshim ask why don’t we say that a city that has a Shul would also be exempt from becomin...
