U.S. equity markets surged on Thursday with the Dow Jones Industrial Average exiting bear market territory as optimism grows that the economy will regain its footing despite the coronavirus crisis. The Dow gained 1,351 points or over 6.4 percent. The S&P 500 also rose 6.3 percent and the Nasdaq Composite over 5.6 percent. A new bull market is set to begin on Thursday. This hope outweighed first-time unemployment filings which surged to a record 3.28 million last week, according to the Labor Department, as the COVID-19 pandemic prompted businesses to temporarily close...

Blue and White leader voted in as Knesset Speaker 74-18 as his party falls apart. Blue and White chairman Benny Gantz was selected to be the next Speaker of the Knesset Thursday. 74 MKs voted in favor of Gantz's appointment while 18 voted against. Gantz was the only MK to submit his candidacy for the position. The move received support from the Likud and Prime Minister Netanyahu, but was opposed on the left and within the Blue and White party. Telem leader Moshe Ya'alon and Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid submitted requests to break away from the Blue and White party in protest against Gantz's candidacy. Gantz's election paves the way for a national unity government to be formed.
After much rancor and two failed motions to proceed, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed the $2 trillion “Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act,” the "phase three" legislation that is intended to address the monumental economic fallout that the nation is expected to experience as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. The bill, which has been the subject of days of intense negotiation and will now go to the House, has been designed to cover various sectors of American society, including families, businesses, and nonprofits and educational institutions. Agudath Israel of America has been working with the Administration, congressional leaders and other faith-based organizations in helping to craft the stimulus legislation. Families, religious entities and charitable in...

In a unique display of collaboration between the IDF and Israeli civil society, tens of thousands of senior citizens in Israel will be receiving basic food and hygiene products, allowing them to stay at home and avoid the risk of being infected by the coronavirus. Participating in this joint initiative and operation is the Latet organization, the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews (The Fellowship), some of the largest foundations in Israel (Rashi, Ted Arison, Azrieli and Adelis), as well as leading companies in the business sector (...
U.S. equity markets clambered higher Thursday as investors digested record jobless claims and waited for the House to vote on a $2 trillion relief package. First-time unemployment filings surged to a record 3.28 million last week, according to the Labor Department, as the COVID-19 pandemic prompted businesses to temporarily close their doors and lay off employees. The previous record was 695,000, set in 1982. The all-time high in claims came hours after the Senate voted 96-0, passing the $2 trillion relief package that would extend aid to individuals, small businesses and corporations hit hardest by the pandemic. The House of Representatives is scheduled to debate the bill on Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained as many as 1,171 points, or 5.5 percent, whi...
Frontline health care providers around the country are sounding alarm bells about the rationing of protective gear and lack of rapid response COVID-19 testing -- and some are even doing so from quarantine. Distressed doctors and other health care professionals have been sidelined from the pandemic response because they have suspected cases of coronavirus. They are home with their quarantined spouses and kids, but in a sign of how disjointed the coronavirus response has been, some doctors have no idea if they are actually infected. "It's pretty frustrating that we have celebrities and basketball players getting tested the same day," said Dr. Damian Caraballo, a Tampa emergency room physician who had been quarantined for a week before learning he was negativ...

The service was kept small, as the foundation stuck to strict adherence to the Health Ministry guidelines. Tens of thousands of people tuned in to watch dozens of worshipers as they came out to pray at the Western Wall on Wednesday evening, praying for the end of the coronavirus 'plague' and the speedy recovery of the sick.  50,000 people watched the service live on the Western Wall Heritage Website and on Kol Lashon. The prayer was held on Yom Kippur Katan, the day before the beginning of the month in the Jewish calendar. Read more at JPost
“As Freud has shown, blunders are not the merest chance. They are the result of suppressed desires and conflicts. They are ripples on the surface of life, produced by unsuspected springs. And these may be very deep - as deep as the soul itself. The blunder may amount to the opening of a destiny.” - Joseph Campbell, The Hero With a Thousand Faces  “Speak to the Children of Israel, saying, When a person will sin unintentionally from among all the commandments of Hashem that may not be done, and he commits one of them.” (Vayikra 4:2) Now this, of all commands, strikes one as troubling.  To seek atonement for errors and mistakes made consciously and even intentionally… that seems only right.  Every one of us must be held accountable for our acti...

Likud's bloc to support Gantz in vote. In a dramatic turn of events, Blue and White leader Benny Gantz will be voted in as the next speaker of the Knesset on Thursday after his party reached an agreement with Likud that could result in the breakup of Gantz's party. The Likud has objected to Blue and White MK Meir Cohen becoming Knesset speaker, because he is from the Yesh Atid party in Blue and White that may end up staying out of a national unity government if it is initially led by Netanyahu. Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid has an agreement with Gantz that the speaker must come from his party. A meeting of the cockpit of leaders in Blue and White ended in what has been described as the worst ever fight among the leaders. Sources in Blue and White said the party is close...

The number of Americans filing for unemployment surged to 3.28 million last week, shattering a decades-old record in jobless claims as the coronavirus pandemic forced businesses around the country to shutter their doors. The number eclipsed the previous record of 695,000 set in 1982 and is well above the levels seen in the midst of the 2008 financial crisis, the Labor Department said in its weekly report. Estimates varied drastically for how high the number of people who applied in mid-March for unemployment benefits would be, ranging from 1 million to 2.25 million Americans who lost their jobs during the period between March 15 and March 21, but economists agreed it would be grim.
