After beginning to enforce Shabbos observance in Ashdod, secular protests pushed Mayor Yechiel Lasri to change policy. He announced that a municipal bylaw requiring shops to close on Shabbos will no longer be enforced at the Big Fashion and Star Center malls, but only in grocery stores situated in religious areas or near shuls. MK Tamar Zandberg of Meretz claimed this as a secular victory, hundreds of secular Jews demonstrated outside city hall despite the new policy. A leader of the protest told Haaretz that “residents are worried and they don’t understand the mayor’s changing versions.”
A United Airlines passenger who got bumped from her flight ended up with a $10,000 travel voucher for her troubles. That’s what the carrier ultimately offered Allison Preiss on Thursday when she lost her seat on a full morning flight from Washington Dulles to Austin. The issue, as it turned out, is that a broken seat on the plane apparently had to be taken out of service. That meant United now had one less seat to offer on the fully-booked flight. Once it looked like she was about to be that passenger, Preiss – a communications director from Washington – took to Twitter with a long list of complaints and gripes. "United is offering $1K in travel credit for an oversold flight. If nobody bites, they will kick off the lowest fare passenger by pulling them ...
TREBES, France (AP) — An armed man took hostages in a supermarket in southern France on Friday, killing three people and injuring about a dozen others before being shot to death when French police stormed the market, authorities said. French President Emmanuel Macron said all evidence suggested that it was a terror attack — the first one since he became president in May. It's unclear how many victims there are overall, said Yves Lefebvre, secretary general of SGP Police-FO police union, The attacker first fired six shots at police officers on their way back from jogging near the city of Carcassonne on Friday morning, said Lefebvre. The police were not in uniform but were wearing athletic clothes with police insignia. One police officer was shot in the shoulder, but the ...
Indiana Republican Congressman Todd Rokita is calling on the House of Representatives to condemn “Nation of Islam” leader Louis Farrakhan. Most of us are familiar with the racist demagogue Mr. Farrakhan’s more memorable rantings, like “The white man is a devil by nature”; “Hitler was a very great man”; “We know that Jews are … plotting against us as we speak.” The calypso singer-turned-“reverend” has denied the Holocaust, blamed Jews for the 9/11 attacks, and said that white people “deserve to die.” And just to make sure no one thinks he may have gone soft (or sane) in his dotage, just last month he railed that “powerful Jews are my enemy … responsible for … filth and degenerate behav...

An Israeli borrower owed a record $460 billion, most of it interest, on a $870,000 loan he took in the ’90s from a gray-market lender at 77% annual interest for missed payments. The borrower stopped payments in 1996. After losing two court cases, the borrower appealed to the Supreme Court, by which time his debt was double Israel’s annual state budget. Justice Isaac Amit canceled the penalty interest rates retroactively and brokered a compromise payment of $6.4 million.
Worldwide carbon dioxide emissions related to energy grew 1.4 percent last year over the previous year, hitting a new record, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said. The growth to 32.5 gigatons of pollution followed three straight years of flat emissions. Emissions did not grow everywhere, the IEA said Thursday in its annual report. Many nations, including Japan, Mexico and the United Kingdom, saw their emissions fall, and the United States’ carbon emissions dropped the most of any country. Read more at The Hill.
A survey conducted by Israel’s Ministry of Science and Technology revealed that the majority of Israeli parents hope their children will go into medicine or the high-tech industry. Out of 18 potential professions, 57 percent of parents said they hoped that their children would grow up to be doctors, 52 percent chose high-tech, and 48 percent picked engineering. The field of science came in fourth place, followed by business, accounting and law. Just 16 percent of parents hoped their children would be career army officers or teachers. Parliamentarians and journalists tied for 12th place — a five-place-position jump for journalism since last year’s survey. The survey was carried out by the Geocartography company among a representative sample of Jewish and Arab adults du...

An Israeli soccer player and the captain of the Iranian national team took to the internet to show that the people of Iran and the people of Israel do not harbor hate. “In soccer, there are different rules, and there is one language without prejudice and without wars,” Maccabi Haifa and Israeli national team player Maor Buzaglo posted in Hebrew on Facebook and Twitter. “The captain of the Iranian national team and I show it can be different.” Buzaglo posted a picture of himself sitting on a table with Ashkan Dejagah, Iran’s national team captain. Dejagah refused to play with the German Under 21 team in Israel in 2007, but said he had declined out of fear that he would be jailed by the regime if he ever went back to Iran. Iran does not recognize the State o...
An Iranian who chairs a Maltese bank has been arrested on US charges that he participated in a scheme to evade US sanctions and funnel more than $115 million paid under a Venezuelan construction contract through the US financial system, federal prosecutors said on Tuesday. Ali Sadr Hashemi Nejad, 38, was charged in a six-count indictment filed in federal court in Manhattan accusing him of a role in a scheme to evade US economic sanctions against Iran, prosecutors said. Sadr, chairman of Maltese-registered Pilatus Bank, was arrested on Monday in Dulles, Virginia, according to court papers. A lawyer for Sadr declined comment. Prosecutors said Sadr’s family controlled an Iranian conglomerate called Stratus Group, which had international business operations and that led a project to c...
The family of Stephon Clark renewed its calls for justice Thursday, hours after police in Sacramento released body-camera and helicopter video footage of a fatal shooting by officers that activists say raises new questions about the officers’ actions. Clark, 22, was killed Sunday after two officers, responding to a call about someone breaking windows with a crowbar, confronted him outside his grandmother’s home. In video footage, Clark can be seen running to the backyard, where an officer is heard yelling at Clark to “show me your hands” and then exclaiming “Gun!” The two officers fired 20 times at Clark, killing him. The only thing in his hands, police have since said, was a white iPhone. “He was at the wrong place at the wrong time in his own b...
The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee issued a subpoena to the Justice Department Thursday night, demanding documents related to the role information from a controversial dossier played in securing a surveillance warrant for a Trump campaign adviser, the investigation into former secretary of state Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server, and the firing of Andrew McCabe as deputy FBI director. In a letter to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., complained that the Justice Department has been taking too long to produce the materials, some of which he and House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., began asking the department for last October. Gowdy did not join Goodlatte in issuing any of the subpoenas...

U.S. allies breathed sighs of relief Thursday after the Trump administration issued a temporary reprieve on tariffs on steel and aluminum, hours before they were set to begin. The decision to exclude some of the United States’ closest trading partners from the import tariffs gave some space to the U.S. allies as they sought to negotiate permanent exemptions. Argentina, Australia, Brazil, the European Union and South Korea are on the list U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer announced at a Senate hearing. Canada and Mexico already had been exempted.(c) 2018, The Washington Post · Michael Birnbaum

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump threw the massive spending bill into doubt Friday, saying he was "considering" a veto of the $1.3 trillion plan over concerns about young "Dreamer" immigrants and border wall money. Hours before funding for the government expires, Trump said on Twitter that he was weighing a veto "based on the fact that the 800,000 plus DACA recipients have been totally abandoned by the Democrats (not even mentioned in Bill) and the BORDER WALL, which is desperately needed for our National Defense, is not fully funded." The tweet was at odds with comments Thursday by Trump's supporters. Budget director Mick Mulvaney had said the president would sign the bill and Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan said Trump was supportive. Congress has already left tow...
