The gunman who reportedly swore allegiance to ISIS and barricaded himself inside a supermarket in southern France, killing at least two people, reportedly demanded the release of Salah Abdeslam, one of the men behind the deadly 2015 Paris terror attacks.  Local media reports at least 12 others are injured in the incident that French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said "seems to be a terrorist act."  "This is a serious situation," Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said. The gunman then took shelter inside the supermarket in Trebes and reportedly yelled “Allahu Akbar!” which roughly translates to “God is Great!” in Arabic. The suspect also reportedly said "he is ready to die for Syria" and demanded Abdeslam be released from custody. Abdeslam is the l...
Baltimore, MD - Mar. 22, 2018 - I recently heard a joke that goes along these lines: Studies say that one in every 4 people has a mental health issue. So look at your three closest friends. If they’re fine, it’s probably you. Unfortunately, I smiled when I heard that, but I know that mental health issues are no laughing matter. That’s why, since I started my campaign for State Delegate last year, I have constantly been raising the issue of the need for more affordable mental health care. From teens and young adults battling eating disorders or depression to families grappling with opioid addiction issues, to aging parents facing dementia or other illnesses that affect their mental health, this issue is a priority for many families, but unfortunately not for lawmakers an...
PARIS (AP) — An armed man took hostages in a supermarket in southern France on Friday, killing two and injuring about a dozen others, police said. He had earlier opened fire on officers nearby. A spokesman with the national police service told The Associated Press that the attacker was still in the supermarket but it was unclear if there were people inside with him. Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said all information suggested it "seems to be a terrorist act." France has been on high alert since a string of Islamic extremist attacks in 2015 and 2016 that killed more than 200 people. The attacker first fired six shots at police officers who were on their way back from jogging near the city of Carcassonne on Friday morning, said Yves Lefebvre, secretary general of SGP Police-FO pol...

The Paris prosecutor's office said counterterrorism investigators are taking over the probe into the ongoing incident Friday in the town of Trebes, but did not provide details on why. There are unconfirmed media reports that the assailant claimed connections to the Islamic State group. Interior Minister spokesman Frederic Delanouvelle told The Associated Press that there is one suspect and police are trying to subdue him. WASHINGTON (AP) — Huge spending bill clears key Senate hurdle as Congress nears OK of big boosts for defense, domestic programs.
Washington - Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell set a record on Wednesday, after the U.S. central bank delivered a widely-expected interest rate hike, by holding the briefest quarterly news conference since the Fed began giving them in April 2011. Powell, who took the helm at the U.S. central bank in February, gave the Fed’s views and took reporters’ questions for 43 minutes, according to a video posted on the YouTube page of the Fed’s Board of Governors. His predecessor Janet Yellen, Fed chair from 2014 until January, made appearances lasting about 58 minutes on average during her 16 new conferences, Reuters found in a review of the videos on the Fed’s YouTube page. Powell showed a business-like approach that contrasted with the more academic style favored b...
NEW YORK (AP) — New York City's buildings regulator launched investigations at more than a dozen Kushner Cos. properties Wednesday following an Associated Press report that the real estate developer routinely filed false paperwork claiming it had zero rent-regulated tenants in its buildings across the city. The Department of Buildings is investigating possible "illegal activity" involving applications that sought permission to begin construction work at 13 of the developer's buildings, according to public records maintained by the regulator. The AP reported Sunday that Kushner Cos. stated in more than 80 permit applications that it had zero rent-regulated tenants in its buildings when it, in fact, had hundreds. The false filings were made while Kushner Cos. was run by Jar...
Twitter shares were down 12 percent by Tuesday evening following reports that Israel was considering legal action against the social-media platform. Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked has accused Twitter of providing a channel for terror organizations to promote terror and incite violence, and not doing enough to end incitement against Israel. “Terrorist organizations such as Hamas and Hezbollah have moved to Twitter instead of Facebook,” she said. “Through Twitter, the terrorist organizations promote terror and incite to violence, including public activity that they carry out without fear.” A wave of stabbing attacks in 2014 gained strength through social media, leading Israel’s government to try to pass a “Facebook Law” that would empower Israel t...
On all other nights we eat chametz and matzah. On this night - only matzah? Do we really eat matzah on all other nights of the year? Although we certainly may partake of it, but the vast majority of people don’t eat matzah regularly. So what is this child referring to? The Abarbanel, among other commentators suggest that the child in this very first of the four questions is asking a much more pointed question. On Pesach we celebrate the exodus from Egypt and thank Hashem for saving us from destruction and choosing us as His nation. In the days when the Mikdash stood one who was released from bondage, where life was in jeopardy, would bring a Korban Todah, a Thanksgiving offering. This sacrifice not only entailed the bringing of an animal but one also brought four sets of bread, ea...
Gaza - Hamas said its security forces in Gaza shot dead on Thursday the main suspect behind an attempt to assassinate the Palestinian prime minister, a bombing that threatens to unravel its reconciliation agreement with the West Bank-based government. Two members of the Hamas security forces and one accomplice of the suspect also died in the shootout, the Hamas-led Gaza interior ministry said. Advertisement: The bombing of Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah’s convoy in Gaza last week dealt another blow to efforts to implement a unity deal between the two main Palestinian factions - Islamist Hamas, which dominates Gaza, and Fatah, the main party in the Palestinian Authority in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. The motorcade Hamdallah and Palestinian security chief Majid Faraj...
THE FOLLOWING IS VIA YWN HaRav Shlomo HaKohen Aviner has spoken out against the photo appearing on the rear of the IDF Rabbinate’s new Haggadah, a photo of both female and male soldiers seated side-by-side for Seder. When Rav Aviner, Rosh Yeshivat Ateret Kohanim was asked what troubled him, he responded that he saw the illustration showing male and female soldiers seated around the Seder Plate together. He questioned rhetorically if this is acceptable, responding “it certainly is not”. In his teshuva addressing the Haggadah, the rav says the photo is without a doubt unacceptable...read more at YWN
WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland's government distanced itself Thursday from comments made by the prime minister's father, who claimed Jews willingly entered ghettos during the German occupation of Poland to get away from their Christian neighbors. The comment by Kornel Morawiecki, a senior lawmaker and father of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, is the latest episode in weeks of bitterness that have erupted over a controversial new Holocaust speech law. Kornel Morawiecki claimed in a recent interview that Jews were not forced into ghettos by Germans but went willingly because "they were told there would be an enclave where they could get away from nasty Poles." The comment is historically inaccurate. It also seems to minimize the tragedy of the Jews and suggest they partly...
RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) — A series of recent health scares have raised new concerns about octogenarian President Mahmoud Abbas, reviving anxiety about a potentially chaotic, and even bloody, succession battle that is bound to further weaken the Palestinian cause. In the latest sign of Abbas' health troubles, officials and medical sources say a cardiologist has moved into the presidential compound in Ramallah to monitor the longtime leader. The move follows a mysterious hospital visit in the United States after Abbas appeared weak in an address to the United Nations Security Council. Abbas, a heavy smoker with long-standing heart problems who turns 83 next week, insists he is fine. But after more than a decade of avoiding discussion of the post-Abbas era, Palestinian official...
A teenage girl who was shot when a classmate opened fire inside their Maryland high school is brain dead and is being removed from life support, her mother said Thursday. Melissa Willey told news reporters Thursday night that her daughter, 16-year-old Jaelynn Willey has "no life left in her." She said Jaelynn would be removed from life support during the evening, by the family's decision. The mother, holding a young baby, said, "On Tuesday ... our lives changed completely and totally forever. My daughter was hurt by a boy who shot her in the head and took everything from our lives." The teen was shot Tuesday by 17-year-old Austin Rollins at Great Mills High School in St. Mary's County. Rollins died after shooting Willey. A school resource officer got there within a minute and...
JERUSALEM (AP) — In Israel, Paddington Bear eats his marmalade on matzo. On some posters advertising the new film, "Paddington 2," the British movie creation is being given a kosher-for-Passover makeover. Elsewhere, Paddington Bear holds his trademark bread and marmalade sandwich shaped as a 2. In Israel, his marmalade is spread on a 2-shaped matzo — the unleavened bread eaten during Passover. A spokeswoman for the Israeli distributor said Thursday the campaign is meant as a nod to the holiday, which starts next week.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Primed for economic combat, President Donald Trump set in motion tariffs on as much as $60 billion in Chinese imports to the U.S. on Thursday and accused the Chinese of high-tech thievery, picking a fight that could push the global heavyweights into a trade war. China threatened retaliation, and Wall Street cringed, recording one of the biggest drops of Trump's presidency. But he declared the U.S. would emerge "much stronger, much richer." It was the boldest example to date of Trump's "America first" agenda, the culmination of his longstanding view that weak U.S. trade policies and enforcement have hollowed out the nation's workforce and ballooned the federal deficit. Two weeks ago, with fanfare, he announced major penalty tariffs on steel and alumi...
Jerusalem - The next “prize” the Palestinians will likely claim as their own at UNESCO will probably be the archeological site of Qumran and its Dead Sea Scrolls, Shimon Samuels of the Simon Wiesenthal Center said on Wednesday. He spoke at a panel on the denial of Jewish history in international organizations at the Foreign Ministry-sponsored sixth Global Forum for Combating Antisemitism in Jerusalem. Samuels chronicled the Palestinians’ success at having attributed to themselves biblical and cultural sites, including Jewish ones, on the World Heritage List since joining the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization as a member state in 2011. The World Heritage Committee ascribed to “Palestine” Bethlehem’s Church of the Nativity...
