A major part of Sefer Bereishis is involved with the story of Yosef. He is a strong individual. He succeeds beyond all the expectations that people had for him. He had dreams about his relationship to his family. One regarding his brothers alone, and another regarding his parents along with his brothers. Most people’s dreams reflect what they are thinking about during the day and can be dismissed. On occasion, dreams have a prophetic quality to them where Hashem is sending the dreamer a message. Yosef was convinced that his dreams were a form of nevuoh which had to be revealed and ultimately fulfilled. Yosef knew that he was hated by his brothers and that sharing these dreams would make things worse. But he felt duty-bound to relate these dreams to them since they were a nevuoh that...

Baltimore could be hit its third round of measurable snow within a week. WBAL-TV 11 Meteorologist Ava Marie says parts of the Baltimore area could see 1 to 2 inches of accumulation and slick roads. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 1 PM this afternoon to 7 PM this evening. Maryland State Highway Administration crews are pre-treating major roadways with a slat brine to melt any snow that falls today. SHA spokesman Charlie Gischlar says crews only have about a five hour window as of 8 this morning to treat the roads. He does say there is some residual salt on some roadways following Wednesday night's clipper storm. Gischlar says road pavement temperatures are around freezing meaning pre-treating roads with salt will be ef...

Teva is shutting or relocating most of its Israel operations, firing 3,300 of 6,430 employees in Israel. Teva plans to cut the number of jobs at its global headquarters in Petach Tikvah by 45%. Nissenkorn said, “Teva has received NIS 22 b...
A raucous occurred on Wednesday in the meeting of the Knesset committee that is responsible for infant rights. During the lively meeting, 10 Rabbinical judges from the Rabbinical high court expressed their opposition to the proposed change in the current law that gives custody rights to the mother for all children under the age of six. The proposed change would affect the long-standing precedent that a mother in a divorced or separated couple would have the majority of the custody of children under the age of two except in cases of special consideration. Director of the Rabbinical Courts in Israel, Rabbi Shimon Yakoby requested that the members of the Rabbinical court intercede during the committee meeting and express their opinion. In a letter penned by the Rabbis they wrote: We, the und...
A gunman shot two suburban St. Louis police officers in the torso before barricading himself inside a home Thursday, but bulletproof vests saved both officers from serious injury. The shooting happened in the city of Bellefontaine Neighbors. The two local officers — a 44-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman — were hospitalized with bruising and checked for internal injuries, said St. Louis County police spokesman Shawn McGuire. “By God’s will, both officers were struck in a location where they had protection,” McGuire said. The officers were released from the hospital by midday. Both are expected to recover. Police had been looking for a 37-year-old man wanted for questioning after a Wednesday night report of shots fired, McGuire said. Officers saw t...
The Federal Communications Commission repealed the Obama-era “net neutrality” rules Thursday, giving internet service providers like Verizon, Comcast and AT&T a free hand to slow or block websites and apps as they see fit or charge more for faster speeds. In a straight party-line vote of 3-2, the Republican-controlled FCC junked the long-time principle that said all web traffic must be treated equally. The move represents a radical departure from a decade of federal oversight. The push toward eliminating the rules has touched off protests and stirred fears among consumer advocates and ordinary Americans that cable and phone companies will be able to control what people see and do online. On Thursday, about 60 demonstrators gathered in the bitter chill in Washington ...
Most Americans think Donald Trump did something illegal or at least unethical regarding ties between his presidential campaign and Russia — and they think he’s trying to obstruct the investigation looking into those possible connections. The deeply divided country is more concerned about health care and the economy than any collusion with the Kremlin, according to a new poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. But the survey also shows that Americans are unhappy with the way Trump is dealing with the investigations led by Congress and special counsel Robert Mueller. Most people believe Trump is trying to obstruct the investigations, which have produced charges against four of his campaign advisers and increasingly appear focused on the presi...
Dr. Edward Horwitz is a leading cardiologist/ lipidologist in Israel. He was trained at the Cleveland Clinic and is one of the only lipidologists practicing in Israel. The Five Towns Jewish Times spoke to him about differences between American medicine and Israeli medicine as it pertains to his field. It is hoped that this article will help save lives. RYH: Dr. Horwitz, generally speaking, in the field of cardiology – how does Israel compare to the United States? DH: For preventative cardiology, they are both poor. Care for diabetics in Israel, however, is particularly dismal. There needs to be drastic change. RYH: What about dieticians for both diabetic and cardiology patients? How are they doing? DH: They are both beating around the bush. They focus on the quality of foo...
Israeli Police Commissioner Roni Alsheich went to pay his respects on Thursday afternoon to the family of Maran Hagaon HaRav Aharon Leib Shteinman, ZATZAL, whose Levaya was on Wednesday. Menachem Shapira, Mayor of Bnei Brak, accompanied the Police Chief on the visit. One of the Rabbis present Rabbi Eliyahu Kav, the Police Rabbi of the Tel Aviv District, told a story about how Rav Shteinman helped an officer, who was not Charedi, get the officer’s nephews, who were Charedi, admitted to Charedi yeshivos. Family members recalled how Shapira was asked to admit the last of these nephews to a yeshiva back in Elul. Following the story, Alsheich said that: “If everyone were like HaRav Shteinman, there would be no need for a police force at all.” Family members then...
An 800-foot-tall (244-meter) centerpiece is coming to Detroit’s resurgent downtown as the city continues to build momentum about three years after exiting the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. The 58-story building dominating the local skyline will rise on the site of the iconic J.L. Hudson department store, whose 1983 closing epitomized Detroit’s economic downfall. “When we lost Hudson’s it symbolized how far Detroit had fallen,” Bedrock Detroit real estate founder Dan Gilbert said Thursday during a ceremonial groundbreaking for the new building. “When it was imploded in 1998 it was a very sad day for a lot of people.” But the bad times for downtown appear to be largely over. Bedrock Detroit’s $900 million, two-building ...
The American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland is requesting the body camera footage from the days-long investigation of detective Sean Suiter's death. The ACLU wants the six days of body camera footage to see how police interacted with citizens.  “The public has a right to see body camera footage of police interacting with civilians during the unprecedented cordon in Harlem Park,” ACLU of Maryland senior staff attorney David Rocah said. Parts of the neighborhood were shut down for nearly a week and residents reportedly had to show identification and allow police to search them before being allowed into the cordoned-off blocks.  The ACLU questioned the police cordon last month, troubled by reports of people being subject to pat downs.  "While ...
A second child, 5, who was injured after a rowhome fire early Wednesday morning in Baltimore, has died Thursday, officials said. The fire also claimed the lives of a 4-year-old and a woman a day earlier. The fire started just after 1 a.m. at a rowhome on the 700 block of East Cold Spring Lane, near York Road, in north Baltimore, officials said. Arriving crews found heavy smoke coming from the second floor of the home and rescued the mother and the two children. Neighbor Charlotte Garner heard the sirens and watched it happen. "I came outside, me and my neighbor, he was coming out at the same time and it was all smoky," Garner said. "The fire was shooting out with smoke. It was really smoky. They got in and they calmed it down, and then they started bringing people out. They w...

The battle is not only trying to find the refuah, it's also trying to stay up with the financial obligations which are so overwhelming.ALS has paralyzed his body, but it will not break his family’s spirit - Your kindness and generosity will save the life of former Baltimorean Rabbi Dovid Frid and change the lives of his family I once heard from my Rebbi in the name of the the “Avnei Neizer,” a beautiful explanation of the Gemoro Shabbos105b “Whoever lets down/ weeps over the passing of an adam kasher -- upright, virtuous man -- Hashem counts his tears and puts them aside in His treasury." The Avnei Neizer explains why the term Adam Kasher is used as opposed to Chosid, Tzadik, Gaon… He brings the Gemoro in Chulin 58a which says “A Treifah, an ani...
Officials in Beit Shemesh City Hall announce a major operation took place to remove modesty signs in areas of the city that were ruled to be illegal by the High Court of Justice. City Hall released a message to the press on Thursday, 26 Kislev, that two days after the signs were removed, they were back in place. The city launched a second operation, during predawn hours, again in cooperation with police, removing the signs again in compliance with the High Court’s stern instructions. The court expressed it anger at city officials for failing to rid the city of the signs, warning Mayor Moshe Abutbul that time around, he would be held in contempt of court. The city has since spent an estimated NIS 50,000 to remove six of the eight signs found in the area of Nahar Yarden Street i...
It sounds like a story about the fictional Chelm. The town philosopher sagely informs his fellow citizens that he has no face. He can’t perceive it directly, he points out, and besides, as anyone can plainly see, what people claim is his face clearly resides in his mirror. The silly scene is inspired by celebrated scientists. Like Yale psychology professor Paul Bloom, who has lamented human beings’ stubborn commitment to “dualism,” the idea that people possess both physical and spiritual components. He pities those who believe that there is an “I” somehow separate from one’s body and brain. “The qualities of mental life that we associate with souls…,” he asserts confidently, “emerge from biochemical processes in the brain...
Saudi foreign minister: U.S. serious about peace deal between Israelis and Palestinian Arabs, but plan is still being put together. Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister says he believes the U.S. administration is serious about getting a peace deal between Israelis and Palestinian Arabs, but its proposed plan is still being put together. The minister, Adel al-Jubeir, made the comments in an interview with France 24 television and was quoted by Reuters. “We believe the Trump administration is serious about bringing peace between Israelis and Arabs,” said Jubeir. “They were working on ideas and were consulting with all parties, including Saudi Arabia, and they are incorporating the views represented to them by everybody. They have said they would need a...
The crude pipe bomb that exploded beneath the streets of New York this week served as a chilling reminder of the vulnerability of the city’s subway system, a 24-hour-a-day operation with 472 stations and more than 5 million daily riders. While police say the nation’s largest subway system has some of the tightest security possible that still allows busy New Yorkers to get where they’re going, they acknowledge they can’t be everywhere or anticipate every kind of attack, particularly in this era of lone-wolf terrorism. “It’s very difficult, and it’s getting harder,” John Miller, the New York Police Department’s deputy commissioner of intelligence and counterterrorism, said on CBS’s “This Morning.” ”This is ...
