Police are asking for the public’s help as they try to track the movements of a pioneering New York judge before she was found dead in the Hudson River. Sheila Abdus-Salaam’s body was found along the riverbank near her Manhattan home on April 12. She had been reported missing a day earlier. Two law enforcement officials say the death is being treated as a suicide. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation hasn’t been completed. Investigators were looking for any video or any witnesses who may have seen the 65-year-old in the time leading up to her death. An autopsy was inconclusive as to the cause of death and required further study. Abdus-Salaam was the first black woman on New York state’s highest court.
Officials of the Terem emergency clinics in Israel report a very alert and cautious physician saved the life of an 11-year-old boy involved in what appears to be a not-so-serious bicycle accident in Beit Shemesh. The family brought the child to a Terem clinic and he presented with abdominal abrasions from the fall. Dr. Ze’ev Wimpfheimer, the clinic’s medical director, did a comprehensive exam of the child and decided an ultrasound was in order. This diagnostic exam determined the child had internal bleeding and MDA was summoned and he was transported to Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem by ambulance where he was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit. It was determined that there was an injury to the child’s liver, that was life threatening. Need...

President Donald Trump will speak next week to the commander of the orbiting International Space Station. White House spokesman Sean Spicer said Wednesday the call with astronauts Peggy Whitson and Jack Fischer will take place on April 24. On that date, Whitson, the first woman to command the International Space Station, will have spent 535 days in space, the most time spent in space of any American astronaut. Last month, Trump signed into legislation a law authorizing $19.5 billion in spending for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for the budget year that began Oct. 1. Spicer says the call is partly intended to discuss the “importance of encouraging women to pursue careers in stem fields.” The call will air live on NASA TV.
CBS News has learned that a manhunt is underway for a traitor inside the Central Intelligence Agency. The CIA and FBI are conducting a joint investigation into one of the worst security breaches in CIA history, which exposed thousands of top-secret documents that described CIA tools used to penetrate smartphones, smart televisions and computer systems. Sources familiar with the investigation say it is looking for an insider — either a CIA employee or contractor — who had physical access to the material. The agency has not said publicly when the material was taken or how it was stolen. Much of the material was classified and stored in a highly secure section of the intelligence agency, but sources say hundreds of people would have had access to the material. Investigators are...
The math behind your credit score is getting an overhaul, with changes big enough that they might alter the behavior of both cautious spenders as well as riskier borrowers. Most notably for those with high scores: Abiding by the golden rule of “don’t close your credit card accounts” may now hurt your standing. On the other side, those with low scores may benefit from the removal of civil judgments, medical debts and tax liens as factors. Beyond determining whether someone gets approved for a credit card, a credit score can affect what interest rate and what spending limit are offered. The new method is being implemented later this year by VantageScore, a company created by the credit bureaus Experian, TransUnion and Equifax. It’s not as well-known as Fair Isaac C...

Despite the inglorious end to Bill O’Reilly’s two-decade Fox News Channel career, observers say his deep imprint on Fox and other cable news outlets and his influence on barbed political discourse are intact for the foreseeable future. Fired on Wednesday amid a drumbeat of harassment allegations, the vacationing host’s “The O’Reilly Factor” was quickly redubbed “The Factor” and Fox News announced his time slot will be filled by Tucker Carlson, another adamantly conservative Fox host who dovetails with the channel’s audience. But it was O’Reilly who created the template for how to succeed in cable TV punditry, delighting his viewers with unapologetic attacks on liberal politicians and media members that he delivered with gusto. ...
It was huge. Big money from billionaires, corporations and a roster of NFL owners poured into Donald Trump’s inaugural committee in record-shattering amounts — to pull off an event that was considerably lower-key than previous inaugural celebrations. That leaves a bit of a mystery: What the $107 million was spent for and how much was left over — the excess, if any, to go to charity. It also raises a new round of questions about the influence of money in politics, this time for a president who promised to “drain the swamp” of Washington. Contribution records from Trump’s inaugural committee, released Wednesday by the Federal Election Commission, show the president who railed as a candidate against the corrupting influence of big-money donors was only t...
Syria still has up to three tons of chemical weapons, Israeli defense officials said Wednesday in the first specific intelligence assessment of President Bashar Assad’s weapons capabilities since a deadly chemical attack earlier this month. The estimate came as the head of the international chemical weapons watchdog said laboratory tests had provided “incontrovertible” evidence that victims and survivors of the April 4 attack in northern Syria were exposed to sarin nerve gas or a similar banned toxin. Israel, along with the United States and much of the international community, has accused Assad’s forces of carrying out the attack, which killed at least 90 people, including dozens of children. A senior Israeli military official said Israeli intelligence believes ...
“Yes, Mommy, but what does the key mean? Why do we put it in the Challah dough?” Last Shabbos, we read a fascinating Pasuk in Shir HaShirim – the standard reading for Chol HaMoed Pesach. The verse (Shir HaShirim 5:2) states, “”I was asleep but my heart was awake. A voice! My beloved was knocking: ‘Open to me, my sister, my darling, My dove, my perfect one!..’” In this verse, Hashem is talking to Klal Yisroel. Chazal darshen this pasuk in Yalkut Shimoni (Shir HaShirim 988), “You have become My sister with the observance of the two Mitzvos in Mitzrayim the blood of the Korban Pesach and the blood of Bris Milah..Open for Me an opening like the eye of the needle and I (Hashem) shall open for you like the opening of a wide hall.” TH...
General Motors has stopped doing business in Venezuela after authorities took control of a factory in what GM called an illegal judicial seizure of its assets. The plant was confiscated on Wednesday as anti-government protesters clashed with authorities in a country that is roiling in economic troubles such as food shortages and triple-digit inflation. The Detroit automaker said in a statement Thursday that other assets such as vehicles were taken from the plant, causing irreparable damage to the company. GM says the plant was taken in disregard of its right to due process. The company says it will defend itself legally and that it’s confident that justice eventually will prevail. GM has about 2,700 workers in the troubled country, where it’s been the market leader for over...
Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman issued a statement praising the High Court of Justice decision to permit grocery stores to open in Tel Aviv on Shabbos. The court responded to a petition filed by Tel Aviv City Hall following over two years of government procrastination on the matter. In his Facebook posting the senior minister stated “I welcome the High Court decision to permit opening supermarkets in commercial areas in Tel Aviv on Shabbos. It is a proportional municipal law that on the one hand permits maintaining the Shabbos as a day of rest, and on the other hand gives many citizens the possibility to spend on Shabbos according to their will. Tel Aviv has a certain character that has developed since the establishment of the state, and there is no reason for the state to interv...

A record number of Jews - approximately 1,600 - visited the Temple Mount in Jerusalem during the seven-day Passover holiday this year, breaking last year’s record of 1,015 during the same time, according to non-profit organization Yirah. Additionally, a record number of Jewish visits to the Temple Mount in a single day – 495 – also occurred during the Passover holiday. That exceeds the previous record of 448 visits set during last year’s Sukkot festivities. The highest number of Jewish visits to the Temple Mount was also set during Sukkot 2016, with 1,611 recorded visits to the site.
