It’s a truth not universally acknowledged that good can come from bad. As Iyov said, “Who can bring purity from impurity, not the One?” (14:4; see Targum Yonasan). An untruth almost universally asserted is that race relations in the United States are in a hopeless state. Although Jim Crow laws lie more than a half-century in the past, Americans of all shades live and work side by side and “racist” is an insult, according to a recent New York Times/CBS News poll, fully 70% of Americans say race relations in the country are generally bad. Recent events — more police killings of unarmed black men and the murder of five white policemen by a black militant — might seem to support that dire contention. But, ironically, the shock of all the blo...
Ankara - Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said on Friday that the risk of another coup had not disappeared but said the government and other institutions were in control of the situation. One week after a faction of the Turkish military staged a brief but abortive coup in which an estimated 246 people were killed, Yildirim also urged Turks to stay calm and said life had returned to normal, adding there was no room for complacency. “The danger has not ended but our citizens should not be anxious,” Yildirim told reporters, adding that Turkey’s institutions were guided by the rule of law, not by any desire for revenge, in dealing with the aftermath of the failed coup.
Malaysia - The more than two-year-long hunt for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 will be suspended once the current search area in the Indian Ocean has been completely scoured, the three countries conducting the operation announced Friday, possibly ending all hopes of solving aviation’s greatest mystery. Some families of the lost plane’s 239 passengers and crew were angry over the decision to stop what is already the most expensive search in aviation history, having cost 180 million Australian dollars ($135 million). Others continued to hold out hope. “In the absence of new evidence, Malaysia, Australia and China have collectively decided to suspend the search upon completion of the 120,000-square-kilometer (46,300-square-mile) search area,” Malaysian Transp...
Pastor Mark Burns addressed the Republican National Convention in Cleveland last night delivering a rousing, explosive speech.
Cleveland - Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s suggestion that the United States might abandon its NATO treaty commitments has upended decades of American foreign policy dogma and doctrine in both parties. It has created a domestic furor and fueled angst not only across Europe but in Asia, where Trump’s complaints about allies not paying their own way have also resonated. Trump’s mere musing that he would review allies’ financial contributions — in this case those owed by Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania — before acting under NATO’s Article 5 mutual defense clause if they were attacked by Russia could rock the foundations of the security architecture that has underpinned European stability since the end of World War II. That po...
I don’t usually comment on world events but it’s difficult not to comment on the recent news from France, as some kind of response is needed .What is it that motivates someone to murder multiple strangers in cold blood? Who was Bilam? People often think of him as some kind of magician, perhaps with a funny conical hat, attempting to cast spells. That’s not what Bilam was. He was really something like Hitler. He was a truly evil anti-Semite, of Biblical proportions, who repeatedly attempted to destroy the Jews. When Pharoah asked for advice as to how to deal with the ‘Jewish problem’, other advisors ran away or stayed quiet. It was Bilam whose advice was simple and stark - destroy them! He did eventually manage to achieve part of his aim with his pl...
The following was just posted on the Yesh Atid English Facebook page:  MK Yair Lapid's column in "Kikar Hashabat," an ultra-Orthodox news site, in response to a rabbi blaming MK Lapid for recent terror attacks:  My son Lior sits in a tank opposite the Gaza Strip monitoring the Hamas combatants through his scope.   He is there to defend all of Israel’s citizens. Among them, Rabbi Dov Aharon Zelznik. My son Lior sits in a tank opposite the Gaza Strip monitoring the Hamas combatants through his scope. He is there to defend all of Israel’s citizens- religious, secular, traditional and Haredi. That is what I taught him from the moment he was born, that we are all Jews. We are all brothers. We are all obligated to protect one another. And so he does. In the sea...
The following is Donald Trump’s speech at the Republican National Convention’s Day 4 last night in Cleveland, Ohio, during which he formally accepted the Republican Party’s nomination for president.
London - The estate of former Beatle George Harrison is complaining about the use of his music at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland. Harrison’s family tweeted Friday that the use of the song “Here Comes the Sun” during the introduction of candidate Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka was not authorized, and was “offensive and against the wishes of the George Harrison estate.” Rocker Paul Rodgers also complained about the use of his “All Right Now” at the climax of Trump’s speech. Earlier in the convention, Brian May of Queen complained about the use of the band’s 1977 hit “We Are the Champions” during a Trump convention appearance.‎
Cleveland - Donald Trump has accepted the Republican nomination for president, promising anxious Americans that they will be safer and richer if he is elected in November. Trump painted a dire state of affairs in the United States and the world — instability abroad and crumbling infrastructure at home — and blamed those problems on President Barack Obama and his former secretary of state, presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. “This is the legacy of Hillary Clinton,” he said in Thurday’s primetime speech. “Death, destruction, terrorism and weakness.” Closing the four-day convention in Cleveland, Trump pledged that as president he’ll end crime and violence around the country, and said he would speak for those who don’t...
Melania Trump was in the news at the beginning of the week for purportedly plagiarizing from Michelle Obama’s speech of 2008. Many Republicans are in denial that plagiarism took place, and the odds are that Mrs. Trump herself did not actually commit the plagiarism. The fact that it took place, however, is undeniable to anyone who reads the transcripts from the Republican National Convention. Melania Trump’s speech included this paragraph: “From a young age, my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life. That your word is your bond; that you do what you say and keep your promise. That you treat people with respect. They taught and showed me values and morals in their daily life. That is a lesson that I continue to pass along to our so...

Donald Trump's daughter explains why she believes her father would be better for women than Hillary Clinton. Ivanka Trump stepped out as a potent surrogate for her father on Thursday, promising he would be a compassionate leader who would fight for women's rights and affordable childcare. The 34-year-old businesswoman and mother of three, a loyal fixture on her dad's campaign trail, introduced the 70-year-old mogul as he accepted the Republican nomination for president that few imagined ever possible. "My father not only has the strength and ability necessary to be the next president, but also the kindness and compassion that will enable him to be the leader that this country needs," said the elegant blonde. For those disturbed by Trump's inflammatory comment...
A leader of Nice's Jewish community talks about concerns and confidence a week after terror attack killed 84 people. On Thursday, a week after the terror attack in southern France, representatives from the three major Abrahamic religious held a memorial ceremony and prayer. Arutz Sheva spoke with a senior member of the Jewish community in Nice in order to hear how the past few days have been for the community. N. is one of the people responsible for the Jewish community's security in the city and asked not to be identified by name during these sensitive times. "The attack left the Jewish community in shock," he explained. "It occurred close to Shabbat and many people didn't come to the synagogues the next morning. People are afraid. It happened near the community, ...
“Va’yeef’tach Hashem es pi ha’ason va’tomer l’Bilam, ‘Meh ah’see’see l’cha ki hee’kee’sa’nee zeh shalosh r’galim?’  v And Hashem opened the mouth of the donkey and it said to Bilaam, ‘What have I done to you that you have struck me these three times?’"  Numbers 22:28 Trying desperately to circumvent G-d’s command not to curse the Jewish people and not to go with the ambassadors of King Balak of Moav, Bilaam mounts his donkey and goes with them anyway. When the donkey perceives that an armed angel of G-d is blocking their way, she veers from the road three different times – and three times Bilaam uncharacteristically strikes her to bring her back onto the desired path...
Cleveland - Declaring America in crisis, Donald Trump pledged to cheering Republicans and still-skeptical voters Thursday night that as president he will restore the safety they fear they’re losing, strictly curb immigration and save the nation from Hillary Clinton’s record of “death, destruction, terrorism and weakness.” Confidently addressing the finale of his party’s less-than-smooth national convention, the billionaire businessman declared the nation’s problems too staggering to be fixed within the confines of traditional politics. “I have joined the political arena so that the powerful can no longer beat up on people that cannot defend themselves,” Trump said. The 71-year-old celebrity businessman’s acceptance of the Rep...
Cleveland - Donald Trump’s daughter promised Thursday that her father will fight for equal pay for women and affordable childcare for parents, issues the Republican nominee has rarely if ever addressed on the campaign trail. Ivanka Trump got an enthusiastic welcome at the Republican National Convention. Her primetime speech elicited repeated applause and much praise from delegates in the arena. Touting a side of her father rarely seen on the campaign trail, Ivanka Trump cast her father as a leader who would fight to address the student debt problem and would be a champion for equal pay for mothers and single women. “As president, my father will change the labor laws that were put in place at a time when women weren’t a significant portion of the workplace, an...
Cleveland -  Despite promising “the truth, and nothing else” in his convention speech, Donald Trump presented the nation with a series of previously debunked claims and some new ones Thursday night — about the U.S. tax burden, the perils facing police, Hillary Clinton’s record and more. A look at some of the Republican presidential candidate’s claims and how they compare with the facts: ___ TRUMP: “Decades of progress made in bringing down crime are now being reversed by this administration’s rollback of criminal enforcement. Homicides last year increased by 17 percent in America’s 50 largest cities. That’s the largest increase in 25 years.” THE FACTS: A rollback? President Barack Obama has actually achieved some ...
Baltimore, MD  Daily Dvar Halacha -  July 22, 2016 /  16 Tammuz 5776 - Uh Oh Shabbos Is The 17 Of Tamuz! What Do I Do?
Phoenix, AZ - The longtime sheriff of metropolitan Phoenix fired up the crowd at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland on Thursday by reminding them of Donald Trump’s pledge to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. To chants of “build the wall,” Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Trump will secure the border, “restore law and order and keep drugs and illegal immigrants from entering into our country.” “I am supporting Donald Trump because he is a leader. He produces results and is the only candidate for president ready to get tough in order to protect Americans,” Arpaio said. “I have fought on the front lines to prevent illegal immigration, and I know Donald Trump will stand with me and other proud Americans to ...
