Remarks as prepared for delivery according to a draft obtained by POLITICO Thursday afternoon. Friends, delegates and fellow Americans: I humbly and gratefully accept your nomination for the presidency of the United States. Together, we will lead our party back to the White House, and we will lead our country back to safety, prosperity, and peace. We will be a country of generosity and warmth. But we will also be a country of law and order. Our Convention occurs at a moment of crisis for our nation. The attacks on our police, and the terrorism in our cities, threaten our very way of life. Any politician who does not grasp this danger is not fit to lead our country. Americans watching this address tonight have seen the recent images of violence in our streets and the chaos in ou...

Jerusalem - Israel’s inroads into Africa continues, as Chad – which has suddenly found itself on the front lines in the battle against Islamic extremists – is expected to be the next majority-Muslim African state to re-establish ties with Jerusalem, The Jerusalem Post has learned. Guinea and Israel announced the re-establishment of ties on Wednesday, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu – who visited four east African countries earlier this month – said that another African country would soon follow suit. Chad severed ties with Israel in 1972 after coming under intense pressure from its Arab neighbors, Libya and Sudan.  The Post reported earlier this month that delegations from Chad and Mali, both countries in northern Africa, were in Israel ...
Orlando, FL - New video shows Orange County sheriff’s deputies helping patrons escape the Pulse nightclub during the mass shooting there last month. The video released Thursday comes from the body camera of Sheriff’s Deputy Mark Rutkowski. Gun in one hand, Rutkowski runs into an entrance to the gay nightclub and helps escort out a patron who had been trapped. Another deputy is heard shouting, “Let’s go! Let’s go!” Rutkowski grabs the hand of one man and starts walking him away from the club. Another deputy asks, “Got anymore?” and Rutkowski says, “There’s a line of them coming out.” Gunman Omar Mateen opened fire at Pulse last month. Forty-nine people were killed and 53 injured. Mateen was killed in a shootout wit...

New York - New York City officials say 16- and 17-year-old inmates will be moved off the troubled Rikers Island jail complex and into a Bronx youth facility. Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio (dih BLAH’-zee-oh) announced the $300 million, four-year plan Thursday. It’s subject to land use, planning and community approval. New York and North Carolina are the only two states that automatically prosecute 16- and 17-year-olds as adults. Legislative efforts to raise the age of criminal responsibility statewide have failed. Almost all the 188 teens held on Rikers are awaiting trial. That’s down from 337 in 2013. Federal prosecutors have urged that the teens be moved off Rikers since a 2014 investigation found they were routinely abused. De Blasio says age-appropriate h...
Washington - President Barack Obama on Thursday praised the contributions of Muslim immigrants to the United States, saying any effort to discriminate against the Islamic faith plays into the hands of terrorists. “Muslim Americans are as patriotic, as integrated, as American as any other members of the American family,” Obama said at a White House reception to celebrate the Muslim Eid al-Fitr holiday. “Whether your family has been here for generations or you’re a new arrival, you’re an essential part of the fabric of our country,” he said. The Obama administration has faced criticism for its plan to admit as many as 10,000 Syrian refugees to the United States this year, with some Republicans warning that violent militants could enter the coun...
Highlands, NY - A man held an 81-year-old Marine Corps veteran hostage in his squalid motel room for at least four years in order to steal his benefits checks, authorities said Thursday. Perry Coniglio was arrested Tuesday in his room adjoining the victim’s at a motel in Highlands. The motel sits next door to the police station in the Hudson Valley town, about 50 miles north of New York City. Coniglio, 43, used brute force and intimidation to get the mentally diminished veteran to cooperate with him, police said. The elderly man has advanced dementia, according to police. Police Chief Jack Quinn said the veteran received a “tremendous amount of money” each month in Social Security benefits, pension checks and food stamps, though investigators wouldn’t di...
Pittstown, NJ - A 113-year-old New Jersey woman is the new holder of the title of oldest American. Adele Dunlap became the country’s oldest person earlier this month following the death of Goldie Michelson, of Worcester, Massachusetts, The Record newspaper reported (http://bit.ly/29VvKkY). She also is the 10th oldest person in the world, according to the Los Angeles-based Gerontology Research Group, which tracks supercentenarians, people 110 or older. Dunlap lives at the Country Arch Care Center in Pittstown, where she first arrived at age 99 ½. Asked how it feels to be the oldest American, she told the newspaper: “I don’t feel any different.” Asked what it means to be an American, she said: “Well, I’ve never been anything else.” ...
This essay is the first of a multi-part series on Jewish unity.  This series is dedicated in memory of Hallel Ariel Hy’d and Rabbi Miki Mark Hy’d; two precious neshamos (souls) who gave so much and had so much more to give.  May their memories bring us closer to one another. Our Torah is filled with many beautiful and meaningful mitzvos (commandments).  These mitzvos teach us to how to create and sustain a relationship with God and with one another.  Imagine for a moment if you were to be asked, which is the most important of all of God’s commandments?  Which mitzvah do you think outweighs the rest?  Perhaps, it is Shabbos or Bris Milah (circumcision) both of which are referred to as an “Os” (sign) between God and His nation.&n...
New York -  Donald Trump has said a lot of things that, were he a sitting U.S. president instead of a candidate for the job, could be expected to roil financial markets. If investors were taking the Republican presidential nominee at his word, they would be selling shares of Apple Inc , Mondelez International Inc and Ford Motor Co , and cashing out of Mexican equities - all targets of Trump threats of boycotts, barrier walls or import taxes. Investors betting on a Trump presidency would be buying shares of U.S. companies that dealt exclusively with domestic customers and suppliers. Yet the Trump trade is not much in evidence on Wall Street, where some market strategists and investors told Reuters they find it difficult to position their portfolios for his possible preside...
When Bila’am was traveling on his donkey to curse the Jewish nation, Hashem sent His angel of mercy to stop him (22:22). Despite his donkey refusing to move and miraculously speaking to him, Bila’am still didn't get the message that Hashem did not want him to proceed, and he carried on with his evil mission anyways. Earlier in the parsha, Bila’am himself had attested that if Hashem did not want him to curse the Jews, he would be utterly powerless to do so (22:18). After all of these open signs from Hashem, how did he remain so oblivious to the fact that Hashem clearly did not want him to continue with his wicked plans? Additionally, the Torah states that what convinced Bila’am to undertake this mission to curse the Jews, was the honor and prestige that king B...
Cleveland - A GOP delegate says mega-donor Sheldon Adelson showed Wednesday night where he stood on Ted Cruz’s non-endorsement of Donald Trump. Afterward, he invited Trump into his luxury box. Delegate Amy Tarkanian said she was in the box with Adelson and his wife, Miriam, while Cruz was speaking. When Cruz came to the non-punchline — “vote your conscience” — Tarkanian said, “I fell back into my seat, disgusted.” She said she looked back and saw Miriam Adelson’s jaw had dropped, too. “There were Cruz supporters who weren’t fully on board (with Trump) and now they’re 100 percent” for Trump, Tarkanian said. The Adelsons then invited Trump into their box and indicated they were fully on board with his bid, accord...
Washington -  The White House will revisit a 2015 ban on police forces getting riot gear, armored vehicles and other military-grade equipment from the U.S. armed forces, two police organization directors told Reuters on Thursday. Shortly after the recent shooting deaths of police officers, President Barack Obama agreed to review each banned item, the two law enforcement leaders said. That could result in changes to the ban imposed in May 2015 on the transfer of some equipment from the military to police, said Jim Pasco, executive director of the Fraternal Order of Police, and Bill Johnson, executive director of the National Association of Police Organizations. Last year’s ban came after a public outcry over police in cities, such as Ferguson, Missouri, using military...
Philadelphia - More than 60 current and past office holders from across the country were announced Thursday as speakers at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia next week. They include Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, Flint, Michigan, Mayor Karen Weaver, former U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, of California. More speakers were to be announced in the coming days. Democrats are making the argument that they are uniting behind Hillary Clinton following a bruising primary against Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. He is among the keynote speakers who were previously announced for the convention that begins Monday and runs through Thursday....
Several years ago, a certain Talmid Chacham could not find an available wedding hall to marry off his daughter. The only open date was the night of Shiva Assar B'Tamuz. To the astonishment of many, he booked it! Although he made sure that the Chuppah was indeed before nightfall, he was heard to have commented that many people do not realize when the Three Weeks actually start... We are currently entering the period of mourning that the Midrash refers of “Bein HaMetzarim[1]”, or ‘Between the Confines (Straits)’. This period of Three Weeks commemorates the heralding of the beginning of the tragedies that took place prior to the destruction of both Batei Hamikdash, from the breaching of the walls of ancient Jerusalemon the 17th of Tamuz, until the actual dest...
This week’s Parsha, Balak, presents before us the story of Bilam, the man with the world's greatest ability to curse. Bilam’s power of cursing had been used quite successfully in a remarkable military campaign by Sichon the king of Amorie against the kingdom of Moav. Before employing Bilam’s cursing services Sichon was unable to defeat Moav as hard as he tried. Once Bilam provided the necessary curse upon Moav, he succeeded. Let us look beneath the surface to appreciate Bilam’s ability to curse and why he was so good at it. Our Sages draw our attention to the parallel between our father Avrahum and Bilam. Regarding Avrahum the Torah says “And Avrahum awoke early and saddled his he-donkey …” By Bilam the Torah records the story “And B...
New York - Roger Ailes, who built Fox News into a money-making ratings powerhouse, has resigned as chairman and chief executive of the popular cable channel following allegations of sexual harassment, according to the company. The media executive and Twenty-First Century Fox Inc, the parent of Fox News, had been in negotiations over his departure, a person briefed on the discussions said on Tuesday. Rupert Murdoch, executive chairman of Twenty-First Century Fox, will assume the role of chairman and acting CEO of Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network, the company said. The exit marks a swift downfall for Ailes, the 76-year-old media executive who advised several U.S. Republican presidents, including George H.W. Bush, and turned Fox News into the most-watched U.S. cable news...
Warsaw - The World Jewish Congress has demanded an apology from the Polish education minister over her refusal to recognize the complicity of Poles in a 1941 massacre of several hundred Jews at Jedwabne in the country’s northeast. Speaking to private broadcaster TVN24, Education Minister Anna Zalewska refused to openly admit Poles’ complicity in the pogrom, saying it was a “historical fact, which has been misunderstood many times, with many very biased opinions”. “The dramatic situation which took place in Jedwabne is controversial. Many historians, distinguished professors, paint a completely different picture,” she said. Before World War Two, Poland was home to Europe’s largest Jewish community of some 3.2 million people. Most of them...
Campaign of Muslim leaders in US aims to ensure that the Presidential hopeful won't reach the White House. US Muslim leaders are waging a campaign against Republican nominee Donald Trump to ensure that he never makes it to the White House. According to Reuters, United States imams hope to register a million Muslim voters from their respective communities, in hopes to defeat Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. Trump has occasionally run an anti-Muslim platform. After the terror attack San Bernadino, California, he called to bar all Muslims from entering the US. "We want the Muslim community to understand that if you give up your rights voluntarily, no one will come and give it back to you," said Osama Abu Irshaid, a member of the U.S. Council of Muslim Organizatio...
