Baltimore, MD - Feb. 12, 2025 - The Maryland Realtors said a new survey showed housing affordability is the No. 1 concern for people in the state, surpassing taxes and crime for the first time in history.
The state’s shortage of affordable housing units has nearly doubled in the last five years, according to Maryland Realtors president Cherly Abrams Davis, who puts the blame on local governments.
“Even after 2024’s landmark legislation, some local governments continue to drag their feet to open housing opportunities in their communities,” Davis said.
Realtors are pushing for alternative housing options like “Accessory Dwelling Units,” which are independent units built on existing properties like guest houses.
Davis said their survey found 8...
Senior Hamas spokesperson Sami Abu Zuhri spoke to Al Jazeera on Wednesday evening and stated that Hamas is "committed" to implementing the previously agreed schedule of the hostage deal and that they will not release "all" Israeli hostages on Saturday.
Abu Zuhri's comments likely came as part of a larger statement to Al Jazeera regarding Hamas's views towards the potential breakdown of the ceasefire agreement.
Earlier on Wednesday, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned that if Hamas does not release the Israeli hostages by Saturday, all hell will break loose.
This referenced US President Donald Trump when he said, "If all the Gaza hostages aren't returned by Saturday at 12 p.m., I would say cancel the ceasefire. Let all hell break loose; Israel can ov...
Hamas has reportedly instructed senior figures in the terror group to stop using cell phones amid concerns that the fragile ceasefire with Israel could fall apart, bringing with it a return of Israel’s military offensive.
Sources in Hamas told the London-based Asharq Al-Awsat outlet on Tuesday that the group’s military wing and senior leadership have instructed all senior political and military figures to stop using their phones, as many had returned to using the devices after the ceasefire began last month.
According to the sources, several senior officials have already stopped using their phones over fears of attempts by the IDF to track them via the devices and assassinate them.
The three-stage ceasefire agreement, reached last month, halted some 15 months of fighting tri...
Schools in Sderot will resume operations on March 3, the Education Ministry announced on Monday, a week after the southern city’s mayor joined his local counterparts in a protest demanding official confirmation from the government that residents who were evacuated from their homes due to the war in Gaza can safely go home.
The city of approximately 30,000 has been largely evacuated for over four months, due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, with residents living in hotels or other temporary conditions elsewhere in the country, mostly in Eilat.
The decision was made in conjunction with the Sderot municipality and with the approval of the Home Front Command, the ministry said in a statement. Residents who do not wish to return can remain outside the city until July with state support,...
Two Australian healthcare workers are being investigated after threatening to kill an Israeli man on camera, claiming they had previously killed Jews in their care.
The man and woman, who said they were doctors, spoke with the man via Chatrouletka, a website where strangers are matched internationally to have conversations.
After the Israeli man revealed his nationality, the female worker said "it's Palentine's country, not your country you piece of s---," according to the video.
As the Israeli man asked for peace, the conversation escalated, and the woman said "when the time comes, I want you to remember my face, so you can understand that you will die the most disgusting death."
The pair went on to say they would not treat the man and would kill him if he cam...
President Donald Trump said he had a "lengthy" call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, which included Putin agreeing to "immediately" begin negotiations over the war in Ukraine.
"We agreed to work together, very closely, including visiting each other’s Nations," Trump posted to Truth Social on Wednesday. "We have also agreed to have our respective teams start negotiations immediately, and we will begin by calling President Zelenskyy, of Ukraine, to inform him of the conversation, something which I will be doing right now. I have asked Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Director of the CIA John Ratcliffe, National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, and Ambassador and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, to lead the negotiations which, I feel strongly, will be successful....
The Russian co-founder of a popular bitcoin exchange will be released from U.S. custody Wednesday, a day after a deal between Washington and Moscow freed American Marc Fogel, a U.S. official said.

U.S. authorities have said BTC-e was a key platform used by cybercriminals to facilitate ransomware extortions, identity-theft schemes and narcotics distribution. Vinnik had been awaiting sentencing in the U.S. in late June, after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering. He had been detained since 2017, first in Gr...

Annapolis, MD - Feb. 12, 2025 - State regulators have fined the construction company that lost six workers when the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed last March, claiming the firm violated a safety rule that protects workers from falls, according to a report.
Regulators with Maryland Occupational Safety and Health fined Brawner Builders $2,100 following the conclusion of an investigation into the March 26, 2024 bridge collapse, the Baltimore Sun reported. According to the report, the construction firm violated an occupational safety standard designed to protect workers from falls.
Despite the fine, the report noted the violation did not cause or contribute to the deaths of the workers who were repairing potholes on the bridge when the cargo ship Dali lost po...
We have endured a year of hardship that has tested our emunah. The savage slaughter of our people and the painful aftermath have left us grappling with profound questions of belief. We have witnessed moments of euphoric victory during this war, yet we have also suffered deep and traumatic losses, our triumphs feeling incomplete as our enemies regroup, retool, and return to their murderous designs. This past week, our pain has been magnified. The images of our three hostages emerging from a year and a half of torture and deprivation sent shockwaves through our hearts and filled us with horror. The sight of gaunt prisoners being led from confinement evoked painful memories of the Holocaust. Watching our hostages return fills us with joy and jubilation, yet seeing their condition, imagining t...

Marc Fogel, an American teacher detained for more than three years in Russia, landed in the US on Tuesday night after the Trump administration secured his release in an “exchange.”
The deal to release Fogel, who was designated as wrongfully detained by the US State Department, was negotiated by President Donald Trump, Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff, “and the President’s advisers,” according to a statement from national security adviser Mike Waltz.
The statement did not provide any details about the “exchange,” other than to say it was “a show of good faith from the Russians and a sign we are moving in the right direction to end the brutal and terrible war in Ukraine.”
“We were treated very nicely...
Baltimore, MD - Feb. 11, 2025 - Marylanders might notice there isn’t as much salt on the roads as in the past.
This is part of the Maryland Department of the Environment’s efforts to reduce the use of road salt in favor of salt brine, which contains about 22% salt.
MDE is taking steps to reduce salt in rivers, streams and groundwater to control salt use and improve water quality.
According to MDE, sodium chloride, or salt, is effective, relatively inexpensive, readily available and easily stored, but it can destroy a soil’s structure and cause erosion, can damage and kill vegetation and can contribute to the corrosion of metal bridges and motor vehicles.
It can also seep into groundwater and run off into surface waters, contaminating wildlife habitat and potenti...
