Baltimore, MD - Feb. 3, 2025 - The city of Baltimore filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration late Monday, joining a group of organizations challenging a sweeping executive order that rescinded federal funding for diversity, equity and inclusion programs. The lawsuit claims that the city has been left with a “quandary”: It relies on hundreds of millions of dollars in federal grants, many of which could be at risk under the executive order.“The uncertainty of federal funding leaves the city wondering whether it needs to start reallocating resources—and likely reduce support for other programs—just to sustain its critical municipal functions," the complaint reads.President Donald Trump signed the executive order on his first day in office. Washington, D.C. - Feb. 3, 2025 - The Department of Education announced Monday an investigation into five universities over reports of “widespread antisemitic harassment” in the aftermath of the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israelis. The five universities are Columbia, Northwestern, Portland State, the University of California Berkeley, and the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. “Too many universities have tolerated widespread antisemitic harassment and the illegal encampments that paralyzed campus life last year, driving Jewish life and religious expression underground,” said Craig Trainor, the department’s acting assistant secretary for civil rights. Today, the Department is putting universities, colleges, and K-12 s...

Annapolis, MD - Feb. 3, 2025  - Maryland was dubbed “most improved” in a new report grading state policies to combat tobacco use among residents, due in part to new laws that raised the state tax on cigarettes and included e-cigarettes in the state’s Clean Indoor Air Act last year. But there is still room to improve, according to the American Lung Association. “Maryland did a couple of really great and strong policy things last year,” said Aleks Casper, the association’s advocacy director for Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and Washington, D.C. “But the report highlights that there is more work to be done … That report is a snapshot, so we need to make sure to protect the progress that we’ve made.” The annual State of T...

US President Donald Trump spoke with reporters in the Oval Office on Monday afternoon about a variety of issues including Israel and the chances of the ceasefire holding. Based on a previous statement about Israel's size, the President was asked if he would support the annexation of Judea and Samaria by Israel. While he did not answer the question directly, he said: "It certainly is a small country in terms of land." He demonstrated how small Israel is compared to the rest of the region using his pen. "It's a pretty small piece of land, and it's amazing that they've been able to do what they've been able to do when you think about it. There's a lot of good, smart brainpower, but it is a very small piece of land," he added. Trump was also asked about the cha...

This comes as President Donald Trump and Sheinbaum earlier on Monday announced a deal to delay tariffs by a month after Mexico agreed to place the soldiers at the border. Sheinbaum also noted that the US, for the first time, has agreed to work together to prevent high-powered weapons from entering Mexico. “I believe this is a very important aspect of ...

The news came hours after Elon Musk, the world’s richest man charged with overhauling the federal government, said President Donald Trump had signed off on shutting the agency down. Rubio said that the “functions of USAID” must align with US foreign policy and that it is “a completely unresponsive agency.” Rubio said he is serving as acting administrator of USAID, but said he has “delegated the authority” to someone else with whom he is in touch. The acting USAID administrator had previously been Jason Gray – CNN has asked ...
Worries about President Donald Trump’s tariffs are sending U.S. stocks through sharp swings on Monday as financial markets worldwide drop on concerns about a potential trade war. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 99 points, or 0.2%, as of 11 a.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 1% lower. The U.S. stock market had been on track for a much worse loss itself, with the Dow down 665 points shortly after the start of trading, on worries about how much pain U.S. companies would feel because of the tariffs. Some of the sharpest losses hit Big Tech and other companies that could be hurt most by higher interest rates ...

Baltimore, MD - Feb. 3, 2025 - Baltimore’s top financial watchdog has long advocated for ways to change how the city spends its money. Now, he’s emphatic that the city has vested too much power in its mayor. “We’ve had this culture for now almost three generations of the mayor is just an absolute monarch,” City Comptroller Bill Henry told The Baltimore Sun. Henry referred to Baltimore’s Board of Estimates, which handles the city’s fiscal policy. The mayor effectively controls three out of five votes on the board: his own and those of his two appointees — the city solicitor and director of public works. The two other BOE members are the comptroller and City Council president, both elected citywide. While some say there are advantages to a &...

The delegates, both Democrats, wrote a letter to the chairman of the commission, Frederick H. Hoover, saying the cost of utilities was untenable for Maryland families. The commission approved a three-year, $408 million rate hike in 2023, yet BGE asked for another $150 million in price increases months later, the letter noted. “The magnitude of these price hikes can only be characterized as highly irregular, if not unprecedented,” the pair wrote, according to the release. &ldquo...
