In an unprecedented move, the gedolim of Eretz Yisroel have launched Keren Olam HaTorah, the largest fundraising campaign in Jewish history. This monumental effort comes in response to devastating budget cuts by the Israeli government which have left yeshivos and kollelim facing a staggering $107 million deficit. As of April 1, Israel’s Supreme Court froze all funding for bochurim and yungerleit between the ages of 18-26, affecting over 50,000 bochurim and avreichim across more than 1,500 institutions. BOCHURIM AND AVREICHIM ARE STARVING The effect of these cuts was immediately felt. Yeshivos are rationing food, electricity, and the air conditioning, leaving bochurim hungry and sweltering in the Israeli heat. Kollelim have been forced to close down and thousands of avreichim...

We are often called the “People of the Book,” yet I think we would be better described as the “People of Miracles.” It is difficult to comprehend how after thousands of years of persecution and barbaric treatment, we are still here. Not only do we exist, but we continue to grow and thrive in both spiritual and material ways. Throughout our history God has provided us with national and personal miracles. These miracles have sustained and inspired us in times of joy and distress. Miracles usually fall into two categories. There are utilitarian miracles, which are miracles performed to remedy an immediate, necessary need (e.g., the splitting of the sea, manna in the desert ….), and there are “teaching miracles,” miracles which occur to teach us a les...

With less than four months until the election, new campaign finance reports show Angela Alsobrooks and Larry Hogan have each raised millions of dollars over the past three months. These are the first fundraising numbers released since the primary in May — and in that respect, Alsobrooks and Hogan are neck-and-neck. But UMBC associate professor of political science Ian Anson told 11 News Investigates there’s much more to the story leading up to November. “This was an incredibly expensive primary, one of the most expensive primaries that we’ve ever seen,” Anson said. The end result is Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks as the Democratic candidate for Senate, and former Gov. Larry Hogan is the Republican nominee. “This is somethin...

Access to Grand Central Terminal was restricted on Thursday due to pro-Palestinian protesters at the station. Police could also be seen moving into the area where protesters were beginning to congregate. Eyewitnesses said police blocked the main concourse, so commuters needed to walk the perimeter to get to their trains. Only a few entrances were open, and people were filing through security checkpoints to get in. Authorities advise travelers and commuters to follow guidance from MTA personnel or the police.  Commuters are also advised to use TrainTime to confirm departure times and tracks, as they are subject to changes.  Earlier in the day, NJ Transit announced that several trains will not operate on Thursday and Friday due to "heat-related rail equipment issue...
Baltimore, MD  - July 18, 2024  - A Baltimore Police Departmentsocial media post warns people about the code red extreme heat alert in the city this week. It's a warning that rings hollow for Rachel Dolcine. Her husband works in the Southwestern district, and his precinct hasn't had consistent working air conditioning. "He's been there about 2 years or so now and in the time he's been there, there's been issues with it,” Dolcine told WMAR-2 News’ Elizabeth Worthington. "There have been officers who have had to go home, officers calling out sick, and they're already short-staffed." FOP President Michael Mancuso tells us the problem isn't unique to the Southwestern precinct. He says 6 out of 9 district buildings have poor worki...

Baltimore, MD -  July 18, 2024  - With its refrigerated trucks and vast parking lot, the outside of the Tulkoff Food Products plant looks like every other business in the industrial park. But the 98-year-old business is anything but ordinary. The six-acre site Tulkoff occupies in Holabird was once part of an active Army base during World War II—it’s where they tested the iconic Willys Jeep—and now houses a football-field-sized room filled floor to ceiling and front to back with horseradish. You might think that a room filled with over two million pounds of horseradish root would make your eyes water, or at least your nose tingle, but instead it smells like the dirt that still clings to the root of the horseradish plants from when they were two feet i...

A federal appeals court on Thursday blocked President Joe Biden's administration from continuing to implement a new student debt relief plan designed to lower monthly payments for millions of Americans. The St. Louis-based 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals granted a request by seven Republican-led states to put on hold parts of the U.S. Department of Education's debt relief plan that had not already been blocked by a lower-court judge. That ruling last month by U.S. District Judge John Ross in St. Louis had blocked the department from granting further loan forgiveness under the administration's Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) Plan but had not blocked all of the plan. That plan provides more generous terms than past income-based repayment plans, lowering ...
Baltimore, MD - July 18, 2024  - President Joe Biden tested positive for COVID-19 Wednesday amid a national uptick in emergency room visits and hospitalizations. Hospitalizations in Maryland have remained low, but virus activity is very high, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. With fresh cases bubbling up, particularly the southwestern U.S., health officials are recommending that all Americans get a new vaccination this fall. CDC wastewater monitoring shows “very high” coronavirus levels in seven states and “high” rates in another 19. Maryland’s very high rate of transmission is based on tests conducted at nine wastewater treatment sites. “Outpatient visits to emergency departments have increased...
Anti-Israel groups are seeking to mobilize a heavy presence in Washington, DC for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s July 24 congressional address, threatening him with arrest. “Surround the US Capitol and issue a notice of citizen’s arrest for Netanyahu for crimes against humanity,” said the Shut It Down for Palestine coalition. Beyond the coalition’s main members, which include the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM), National Students for Justice in Palestine, the Act Now to Stop War and End Racism Coalition (Answer), the People’s Forum, and Al-Awda: The Palestine Right to Return Coalition, almost 200 groups have endorsed the rally next Wednesday. American Muslims for Palestine, the Arab Resource and Organizing Center, Code Pink, the U...
