The new Syrian transitional government has been harassing Palestinian factions in Syria, causing them to pack their bags and leave. Numerous Palestinian terrorist groups, as well as other groups, have operated from Damascus for decades. These have included Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC), and others. Members of Hamas were also once hosted by Damascus. On May 3, reports said that officials in Damascus had detained Talal Naji, the head of the PFLP-GC. In late April, the new authorities also detained members of Islamic Jihad. These moves are seen as a way for Syria to crack down on pro-Iranian groups, because the Palestinian terror groups are often pro-Iranian. Iran backed the Assad regime, and Assad backed these Pal...

At one stage of the ensuing תוכחה — Admonition, the Torah describes how after being exiled from the land and scattered among the nations G-d will send timidity into their hearts in the land of their enemies and the sound of a rustling leaf will pursue them…and they will fall, ואין רודף — but there is no one pursuing them. This aspect of punishment, living in uncertainty, reacting to every sound of a rustling leaf as possibly an attacker approaching, can certainly wither our sense of security and instill crushing anxiety. But the concluding description of it being a mistaken fear, with only the wind blowing and 'no one pursuing' would seem to be a rather positive outcome. Better a false alarm than an actual fire! How is this detail then an eleme...
Jeruslaem, Israel - May 23, 2025 - Yakir Yerushalayim (Worthy of Jerusalem) is an annual honor awarded by the Jerusalem Municipality in the days leading up to Yom Yerushalayim, celebrated on the 28th of Iyar, this year Sunday night and Monday, May 25-26, 2025.  The award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the city and its residents in areas such as education, culture, social welfare, and community life. It reflects the spirit of Psalm 122:3—“Built-up Jerusalem is like a city that was joined together”—by celebrating those who help unite and strengthen the diverse fabric of Jerusalem.   This year, the gala event was held at the Tower of David on Thursday night, May 22, with Mayor Moshe Lion honoring the 12 wort...
A federal judge on Friday blocked the Trump administration from cutting off Harvard’s enrollment of foreign students, an action the Ivy League school decried as unconstitutional retaliation for defying the White House’s political demands. In its lawsuit filed earlier Friday in federal court in Boston, Harvard said the government’s action violates the First Amendment and will have an “immediate and devastating effect for Harvard and more than 7,000 visa holders.” “With the stroke of a pen, the government has sought to erase a quarter of Harvard’s student body, international students who contribute significantly to the University and its mission,” Harvard said in its suit. “Without its international students, Harvard is not Harvard...

Someone sent me a striking article that’s been circulating online (attributed to @AP_from_NY). It’s bold, and makes a powerful point. But as with many strong messages, it needs context. —----------- Did you ever notice how Orthodox Jews couldn’t care less what the world thinks of them? Not a little. Not secretly. They truly, completely, deeply don’t care. They’ll walk through an airport looking like they time-traveled out of 1850. Pray out loud in a hoodie or a hat while people whisper. The men grow beards, wear hats, let their tzitzit hang out, like from another world. And they’ll show up to your office two days late because it was a holiday no one’s ever heard of. And they won’t apologize. You can’t imagine what it&rs...

Baltimore, MD - May 22, 2025  - Can you believe that we are in the month of May?!   There’s around 17 days or so left until the end of the school year, but who’s counting? Of course the students, and admittedly yes, the teachers too. There’s no shame in that.  We all worked hard and are ready for that long-awaited summer vacation! It’s all about fun in the sun and precious recharging time for everyone.  Before we jump into all that, it is worthwhile to note that  this month of May is indeed a precious time for educators, and perhaps for parents as well.  It is an opportunity to take pause and make a mental accounting of the school year.  Almost like the cheshbon hanefesh that we do before Rosh Hashanah, this time of year is co...
Baltimore, MD - May 22, 2025  - At the start of the week, I allocated time to write down some thoughts and contemporary lessons from this week’s double Parshios of Behar/Bechukosai. Then our world changed. Last night, less than an hour’s drive from us, a young Jewish couple readying to embark on the greatest adventure of building a life together, were gunned down in our nation’s capital because they were Jewish. Jews were murdered in Washington DC – because they were Jews. Yaron Lichinsky and Sarah Lynn Milgrim were a sweet and devoted young couple. They believed in the Jewish people, they believed in peaceful coexistence, they were working on behalf of the Jewish State and her people. Yaron purchased an engagement ring and planned on proposing to Sarah next we...
