Jerusalem, Israel - Oct. 2320, 16 - Amar'e Stoudemire, made a special appearance at the Inbal Hotel in Jerusalem, Hashana Rabba morning. Off the hotel lobby, the former US basketball star met with young and not so young fans, smiling for photos and selfies, and signing autographs. After being chosen NBA Rookie of the Year in 2003, and having played in six All-Star games, the 6-foot 10-inch former New York Knicks basketball player invested in the Hapoel Jerusalem basketball team and has moved to Israel. Former Baltimorean, basketball star, Tamir Goodman, who is also involved with Hapoel Jerusalem, told BJL, how impressive it is that "a celebrated athlete like Amar'e of the NBA, comes to play in Israel and embrace Israel and help out with charity causes as well." The event was c...

With overflowing gratitude to HaShem, we are overjoyed to announce the arrival of a beautiful little 8-pound baby boy this past Wednesday night. Both Mommy and Baby and are doing well, B”H, and were home for Shabbos. The following are some thoughts I expressed at the Shalom Zachar. Going through the mishnayos of Sukkah, there is some intriguing discussion relating to childbirth and early childhood, as they pertain to sukkah. In the Mishnah (2:8) discussing the exemption of children of the mitzvah, and the limitations of that exemption, it is mentioned that upon the birth of a grandchild, Shammai the Elder arranged a makeshift sukkah over the bed of his daughter-in-law on the baby’s behalf. This represents a more extreme view on the age at which children become required to eat ...

True, this is not quite Hamlet’s question, but it is one that is plaguing many a frum family. One of the general differences between Litvaks (Misnagdim) and Chassidim lies in what they do on the holiday of Shmini Atzeres regarding eating in the Sukkah. Chassidim have traditionally taken a more lenient view than their Litvak counterparts on the issue. It should be noted that each of the two opinions should be respected. Rav Tzaddok HaKohen, in his work Maishiv Tzedek, writes that those who do not eat in the Sukkah on Shmini Atzeres do have a basis in the Gemorah and the Yerushalmi. In this article, an attempt will be made to explain the halachic basis of each of the two customs. The Torah tells us that we must dwell in the Sukkah for seven days. The Torah further tells ...

Hacked emails reveal internal disagreement among top aides to Hillary Clinton about her determination to hold a Clinton Foundation summit in Morocco that later drew attention over its reliance on large financial pledges from foreign governments.   Clinton aide Huma Abedin bluntly wrote in the January 2015 email that "if HRC was not part of it, meeting was a non-starter" and then warned: "She created this mess and she knows it."   It was an uncharacteristic remark from a confidante known for her abiding loyalty to Clinton over the years.   The hacked email was among more than 4,000 messages posted Thursday on the website of the WikiLeaks organization. The emails were stolen from the accounts of John Podesta, Clinton's campaign chairman.   In Wednesday's...
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's former deputy chief of staff says she told him about plans for a traffic study on the George Washington Bridge a month before they began in 2013. Bridget Kelly is testifying Friday in her own defense while on trial on charges that she helped plot bridge lane closings for political revenge against a Democratic mayor who wouldn't endorse the Republican governor. She said she told Christie about a traffic study but did not testify that she told him it was actually to get back at the Fort Lee mayor as prosecutors allege. Kelly is on trial along with another former Christie ally whom prosecutors say launched the bridge closings as revenge against a mayor who wouldn't endorse Christie. After speaking to Christie, she sent an email to David Wild...
Senior Hamas official claims there is no proof Temples ever existed, no archaeological remnants have been found. Senior Hamas official and head of the Jerusalem Palestinian Parliament Ahmad Abu Helbiya praised UNESCO's declaration that there is no connection between Jews and the Temple Mount and called on the UN to investigate "Israeli war crimes" committed against Al-Aqsa mosque. At a Gaza news conference, Abu Helbiya called UNESCO's decision "brave," since it ignored the "Zionist narrative" proving that there was once a Holy Temple on the Temple Mount. He also called the Temple "imaginary" and claimed there have never been any remnants of a Temple found on the Temple Mount. As well, Abu Helbiya condemned UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for saying this decision was ...
Use Extra Caution Driving (October 21, 2016) – In the blink of an eye it can happen.  A deer darts out from the trees.  The natural instinct in drivers is to cut the steering wheel and slam on the brakes.  These actions could be deadly.  The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) is offering autumn driving tips to reduce the chance encounter with a white-tailed deer during the “rut,” or deer mating season. “This is the season that deer become extremely active and present significant danger to drivers and passengers,” said SHA Administrator Gregory C. Johnson, P.E.  “Some of the most serious crashes can occur when drivers swerve to miss deer crossing the road.” Here are some tips ...

Philadelphia will post prosecutors in the city on election day to handle voter intimidation claims. Authorities in Philadelphia will station prosecutors throughout the city on election day to respond to any reports of voter intimidation or other illegal activity after Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump claimed that polling might be “rigged” in this mostly minority city. Philadelphia is one of many U.S. municipalities wrestling with how to respond to Trump’s call for supporters to “watch” polling places, and corresponding promises from civil rights groups that they will send their own backers to the polls. “All of our election judges will be provided with cell phones that have direct access to the district attorney’s office of Phila...
Two fizzy drinks a day could double the risk of diabetes - even if they are diet versions - a Swedish study has found. Research by the Karolinska Institute on 2,800 adults found that those who consumed at least two 200ml servings of soft drinks daily were 2.4 times as likely to suffer from a form of type 2 diabetes. Many fizzy drinks are sold in 330ml cans, meaning that one and a half cans would be enough to double the risk. Those who drank a litre of such drinks saw a 10-fold rise in their chance of suffering from the condition. The increased risks were the same regardless of whether the drinks were sugary or artificially sweetened, the research published in the European Journal of Endocrinology found. Researchers said the sugary drinks may have induced insulin resistan...
"We have pledged to prepare an army of fighters by devoting our full abilities and energies to consolidate the option of armed struggle as the only means to liberate Palestine." — The armed wing of Fatah, Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, Martyr Nidal Al-Amoudi Division. The international community continues to perceive Fatah as the "moderate" Palestinian party with whom Israel should make peace. Yet Fatah is far from a single united bloc; many groups within the faction continue to seek the "liberation of Palestine" through armed struggle. Moreover, neither Abbas nor any of his senior Fatah loyalists have repudiated the war-set Fatah militias. Crucially, many of these Fatah militiamen continue to receive salaries from the Palestinian Authority. These Fatah gunmen who are prepa...
Washington (AFP) – A member of the US military was killed Thursday in a bomb blast north of Mosul, a senior US defense official said, as Iraqi forces in the region continued their push on the city. The official told AFP that the service member had died in what were likely “Mosul-related” operations, but did not provide additional details. More than 100 US troops are advising Iraqi security forces and Kurdish peshmerga as they advance toward Mosul, the Islamic State group’s last stronghold in Iraq, on multiple fronts. Officials did not immediately identify the service member and the US-led coalition fighting IS said further information would be released “as appropriate” — additional details often depend on when family members are notified of the ...
Sites across the internet had problems on Friday morning following a cyberattack on a major internet management company.    On Friday morning, Dyn — a company that hosts domain name systems — announced it has been the subject of a cyberattack that caused major problems for numerous websites. People reported issues with Twitter, Spotify, SoundCloud, Vox Media sites, Airbnb and numerous other sites. Domain name systems (DNS) are essentially the GPS of the internet, taking the text URLs you type into a browser and figuring out where those websites’ data is located on the back end. So when you type mashable.com in a browser, it shows you both the real Mashable and can quickly and easily locate the nearest server that hosts the site’s data.  The ...
Republican nominee Donald Trump recently sent shock-waves through the press by stating during Wednesday night’s debate that he would keep the nation “in suspense” regarding his acceptance of a possible Clinton victory. Senator John McCain spoke out against Trump’s position Thursday, saying that graceful acceptance of defeat is “the American way.” “In every previous election, the loser congratulates the winner and calls them ‘my president,’ McCain pointed out, according to NBC News Correspondent Hallie Jackson. “That’s not just the Republican way or the Democratic way,” McCain was quoted as saying. “It’s the American way. This election must not be any different.” The Arizona senator added that, whil...
