An explosion at a home in the New York City borough of the Bronx on Tuesday killed a battalion chief, the city's highest ranking fire official to die in the line of duty since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, officials said.
Michael Fahy, a 17-year veteran of the fire department, died after he was struck in the head by building debris sent flying to the street, Fire Department Commissioner Daniel Nigro told reporters at New York-Presbyterian/Allen Hospital.
"We lost a hero today and our members are all saddened," said Nigro, who was visibly emotional. "He was a star, a brave man."
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said Fahy, whose father was a fire battalion chief with the city and a contemporary of Nigro's, leaves behind three children, ages 6, 8 and 11.

New York - You never know who you are going to meet walking down the streets of New York City and yesterday, a lesson that Jonathan Pollard learned on Monday as he bumped into Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat.
Arutz Sheva reported that the two men happened upon each other as Pollard and his wife Ester were enjoying the fall weather at an outdoor coffee ship in Manhattan located near a charitable event that Barkat was to be attending. It was the first time that Pollard, who was released from prison 322 days ago, has met with any Israeli officials, and the two man chatted briefly.
The Jerusalem municipality released a statement saying that Barkat was “excited” to meet with Pollard, noting that he had awarded Pollard an “Honorary Citizen of Jerusalem” medal....

Police and security forces deployed along main Jerusalem roads and checkpoints are being set.
Police forces were deploying in the Jerusalem district due to an intelligence alert. Security forces took stations throughout the main roads and thoroughfares and checkpoints were set.
After several hours of heightened alert, police released a statement saying the alert had been lifted and the checkpoints removed.
It should be noted that over the past two weeks, since the end of the Muslim Eid al-Adha ("Sacrifice Feast") holiday, the security situation has significantly worsened, especially in the Jerusalem, Hevron, and Gush Etzion areas.

A delegation of the World Jewish Congress (WJC) led by its president, Ronald S. Lauder, was received by Pope Francis at the Vatican on Monday evening.
In his address, the pope spoke about the challenge to promote peace in the world and about the refugee crisis.
Francis said: “Europe often forgets that it has been enriched by migrants. Europe is closing itself up. Europe is lacking creativity. Europe has a falling birth rate, and problems of high unemployment.”

Hillary Clinton won the first presidential debate last night, according to a wide-variety of polls taken immediately afterward.
Nate Silver at FiveThirtyEight has a good breakdown of these instant polls. First, there’s a CNN poll, which has 62% of voters saying Clinton won versus 27% saying Trump. Public Policy Polling might have a more reliable result, with 52% of voters saying Clinton versus 40% saying Trump.
Even a Breitbart poll had Clinton winning, though to significantly smaller numbers, 48% to 43%.
There were other signs that Clinton won as well, according to Josh Barro at Business Insider. Betting markets increased her odds of winning from 69% before the debate to 73% afterward. CBS and CNN focus groups of undecided voters both indicated she won.

Doctors for former Israeli President say his condition has declined significantly, two weeks after he suffered a stroke.
A dramatic deterioration Tuesday in the condition of former president Shimon Peres, who is hospitalized at the Sheba (Tel Hashomer) hospital in Ramat Gan since suffering a stroke nearly two weeks ago. Doctors now believe that his neurological situation is irreversible.
Peres's condition deteriorated despite daily improvements since he suffered the stroke.
Last week President Ruby Rivlin visited Peres. Rivlin went to the ward where Peres is confined and heard a detailed assessment of his condition from his doctors, hugged his children and talked for a long period with members of Peres' bureau.

Sources say a New York City firefighter has been killed on the scene of a gas explosion that rocked the Kingsbridge neighborhood in the Bronx this morning.
Fire officials say crews were first called to the scene around 6:22 a.m. at 305 West 234th Street to investigate a report of a gas leak.
Sources say it happened at a two-story private residence that possibly had a drug lab inside.
More than 100 firefighters have responded.
Fire officials say there are several other injuries.
The NYPD says four uniformed officers suffered minor injuries.
New York City Emergency Management says drivers should expect traffic delays and road closures in the area.
Con Ed crews have also been dispatched to the scene.

The Chicago Police Department are investigating an attempted kidnaping that took place this past shabbos in the west Rogers Park section of Chicago.
On Shabbos, September 24 at 9:20 a.m., two sisters ages 7 and 10 were on the way to a shul near the 2900 block of West Lunt Avenue when a light-blue 4-door sedan stopped, and an unknown driver motioned for the girls to come near the car. The driver then opened the door of the vehicle and began to exit. The children started to walk away but the driver continued to drive alongside them. The victims ran home to alert their families who called 911.

Jerusalem — Israel’s leader says American support for his country will remain strong regardless of who is elected president in November. Benjamin Netanyahu told his Cabinet Tuesday about his meeting in New York with both presidential candidates, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, and relayed their strong words of support for Israel. NEW YORK (Reuters) - A gas explosion in a private dwelling in the New York City borough of the Bronx injured multiple people on Tuesday, the city's fire department said.
The extent and number of the injuries was not immediately known, a department spokesman said.
Firefighters responded to the dwelling after someone called at about 6:20 a.m. EDT to report a possible gas leak, the spokesman said.
A spokesman for the New York City Police Department said its officers also responded to reports of an explosion at about 7:00 a.m. EDT.

BERLIN (AP) -- Two homemade explosive devices were set off outside a mosque and a conference center in the eastern German city of Dresden, police said Tuesday. Nobody was hurt.
Dresden police said in a statement that there was no immediate report on the extent of damage from the explosions late Monday.
"Even though we do not have a letter of confession, we must assume there's a xenophobic background," Police President Horst Kretschmar said.
German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere called the attacks "outrageous" and condemned them sharply.
"Aggression against people who are practicing Islam is increasing in Germany," he said. "Fortunately, people didn't get hurt, but we don't want these things to happen in Germany."

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Monument is closing indefinitely because of ongoing problems with its elevator, the latest in a series of woes for one of the city's most enduring tourist attractions.
The National Park Service announced Monday that the monument, which draws 600,000 visitors a year, will remain closed until its elevator control system can be modernized, a process expected to take up to nine months once work begins.
A start date for the $3 million project has not been determined.
The lone elevator carrying visitors to the top of the 555-foot obelisk has broken down frequently over the past two years, roughly since the monument reopened after being damaged in an earthquake.

The office of Israel’s State Prosecutor announced Monday that former leading officials in the Yisrael Beitenu party will be charged with corruption, according to Haaretz. 16 individuals are set to be indicted, including former Yisrael Beitenu MKs Stas Misezhnikov and ex-Deputy Minister Faina Kirschenbaum.
Misezhnikov, a former Tourism Minister, is facing charges of fraud, bribery, breach of trust, and using cocaine on the job, which he allegedly sent one of his advisers to purchase for him. Former Deputy Interior Minister Kirschenbaum is being charged with fraud, bribery, breach of trust, tax evasion, and money laundering.
