(AFP). German data protection authorities on Tuesday said they had blocked Facebook from collecting subscriber data from its subsidiary WhatsApp, citing privacy concerns. Facebook and WhatsApp promised in the wake of the Silicon Valley giant’s 2014 acquisition of the messaging app that they would not share data, Hamburg’s Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information Johannes Caspar said in a statement. He added that Facebook would be required to delete any data already received from WhatsApp in Germany. “It has to be (the users’) decision whether they want to connect their account with Facebook,” Caspar said. “Facebook has to ask for their permission in advance.” WhatsApp announced in August that it would begin sharing dat...

Reporter Amir Bar Shalom of Israel’s Channel 1 television encountered Jonathan Pollard and his wife on the streets of New York and conducted an impromptu interview that aired on Erev Shabbos. Pollard said it would “take a miracle” for him to be able to live in Israel Pollard, convicted of spying for Israel, was released from prison in November after 30 years. New data show that murders in the United States rose 10.8 percent in the last year, following a two-decade decline. The FBI said the rise was the biggest single-year increase since 1971. The number of murders for 2015—15,696—was about the same total as in 2009. The total is still half what it was in 1991. “You lost 50 lb. You gained back a couple. You’re not fat,” said Jeffrey Butts, the director of the Research & Evaluation Center at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. “That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look at your behavior, because the trend is not good.” Select cities showed their own trends. New York City saw 352 murders last year, compared to 2,000 per year in the early 1990s. Los Angeles has seen fewer than 300 mur...
Yerushalayim mayor Nir Barkat met rabbonim and politicians of the chareidi Degel Hatorah party who felt that he was antagonistic to their needs and promised to upgrade chareidi schools as part of a general plan to enhance the city’s schools. Barkat also agreed to transfer a large section of the religious Zionist Harel School in Ramot to a local Bais Yaakov school and announced that three new kindergartens will be built for chareidim in the mixed Kiryat Yovel neighborhood as well as other improvements in mixed neighborhoods. Meanwhile, Jewish and Arab parents petitioned in court against the Education Ministry and Yerushalayim municipality, asking the court to demand an explanation why chareidi schools are 1,600 classrooms short and why 2,000 classrooms are missing in Arab...
Looking for a fun event to have at your company this year? How about offering your employees a chance to bring their parents to work. That’s what Amazon.com recently did. And, as reported by a local TV station, everyone seemed to have a blast. Millennials – defined as those between the ages of 18 and 34 – now make up more than half of the U.S. workforce. And as tough as they’d like us to think they are we all know they’re still young at heart. I always hear of the challenges faced by small businesses looking to attract and maintain good people from this generation. So here’s one good idea: what could make an employee more appreciative of where she works than by impressing her parents? In a twist of the decades-old “bring your son/daughte...

Rav Shmuel Auerbach, head of the Peleg Yerushalmi group which opposes yeshiva students even appearing at IDF induction centers to receive exemptions, instructed parents to remove their children from chadorim and schools sympathetic to the group and place them in the Peleg’s own institutions due to the interference of the Education Ministry in chareidi schools. Rav Shmuel warned of the importance “to guard the container of pure oil passed down from generation to generation.” Unlike most chareidi institutions, Peleg takes no funds from the government. Rav Aharon Teitelbaum of Satmar, who also opposes Israeli government funding of schools, praised Peleg’s policy at a recent tish. Due to the transfer, the number of boys learning in Peleg’s Tiferes Tzion Tal...

Lawmakers were skeptical last week when Mylan chief executive Heather Bresch said that the company made only $100 in profit for a two-pack of EpiPens. During a House hearing, Bresch repeatedly referred to a poster board showing how little of the $608 list price trickled back to the company. The incredulity was warranted: The profits Bresch told Congress about were calculated after factoring in the 37.5 percent U.S. tax rate, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission first reported by the Wall Street Journal. That tax rate is more than five times the overall tax rate the company actually paid last year and much higher than its actual U.S. tax rate, which tax specialists have pegged at close to zero. Before taxes, the EpiPen profit is actually $160 for a ...

Shortly after, while going on a big rant about what was done, all Sav...

NEW YORK (AP) — Everyone’s aware of the stakes for Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump during the first presidential debate, but there’s a third person in the equation who faces a different pressure: Lester Holt. The NBC News veteran is moderating his first general election debate, making him solely responsible for the questions asked each candidate and for steering the conversation. His performance will be closely watched, particularly in light of a dispute over the extent to which he should call politicians out for making untrue statements. Holt, 57, has kept quiet about his preparations. The NBC “Nightly News” anchor took over his job last year after predecessor Brian Williams was found to have lied about his role in news stories. Like the modera...
* Israeli firms sign deal to export gas to Jordan * 15-year deal expected to be worth $10 billion (Adds details on regional gas ties in paragraphs 2,7) By Ari Rabinovitch JERUSALEM, Sept 26 (Reuters) - Backers of Israel's massive Leviathan natural gas field signed a $10 billion deal on Monday to supply 1.6 trillion feet (tcf) of gas to Jordan's National Electric Power Company. The deal marks a significant step forward in Israel's efforts to exploit its offshore gas reserves, although it is still looking for a partnership with Egypt or Turkey, or both, which would give it far more export volume and the possibility of linking up with markets in Europe. "Subject to regulatory approvals from Israel and Jordan, sales ... are anticipated to commence," said Texas-base...
Holocaust survivor Joseph Harmatz, who led the most daring attempt by Jews seeking revenge against their former Nazi tormentors, has died. He was 91. His son, Ronel Harmatz, confirmed the death Monday. Harmatz was one of the few remaining Jewish "Avengers" who carried out a mass poisoning of former SS officers in an American prisoner-of-war camp in 1946 that sickened more than 2,200 Germans, but caused no known deaths. Still, the message echoed into a rallying cry for the newborn state of Israel — that the days when attacks on Jews went unanswered were over. Harmatz, who was born in Lithuania and lost most of his family in the Holocaust, spoke to The Associated Press shortly before his death and remained unapologetic for his actions and those of his group Nakam, Hebrew f...
Democrat Hillary Clinton has pulled ahead of Republican rival Donald Trump in the traditional battleground state of Florida, strengthening her position in the race for the White House, the Reuters/Ipsos States of the Nation project showed ahead of the pair's first presidential debate on Monday night. If the election were held on Monday, Clinton would lead Trump in the Electoral College by 259 to 191, with an 88 percent chance of reaching the 270 needed to win, according to the project's results. The project, based on a weekly online tracking poll of more than 15,000 Americans, estimates state-by-state results that will drive the voting in the Electoral College, the body that ultimately selects the president. The results marked the first upward swing in the proj...
