Mexico will send 10,000 National Guard troops to its northern border to help reduce the flow of fentanyl into the US, reinforce the border, and help improve security in its own territory, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said. “For humanitarian reasons, we must help the United States address its fentanyl consumption crisis, which is leading to overdose deaths,” she said at her morning news conference Monday. This comes as President Donald Trump and Sheinbaum earlier on Monday announced a deal to delay tariffs by a month after Mexico agreed to place the soldiers at the border. Sheinbaum also noted that the US, for the first time, has agreed to work together to prevent high-powered weapons from entering Mexico. “I believe this is a very important aspect of ...
Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Monday that he is acting administrator the US Agency for International Development, confirming the de-facto takeover of the humanitarian agency by the State Department. The news came hours after Elon Musk, the world’s richest man charged with overhauling the federal government, said President Donald Trump had signed off on shutting the agency down. Rubio said that the “functions of USAID” must align with US foreign policy and that it is “a completely unresponsive agency.” Rubio said he is serving as acting administrator of USAID, but said he has “delegated the authority” to someone else with whom he is in touch. The acting USAID administrator had previously been Jason Gray – CNN has asked ...
Worries about President Donald Trump’s tariffs are sending U.S. stocks through sharp swings on Monday as financial markets worldwide drop on concerns about a potential trade war. The S&P 500 was down 0.7% in midday trading following worse losses for stock markets across Asia and Europe. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 99 points, or 0.2%, as of 11 a.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 1% lower. The U.S. stock market had been on track for a much worse loss itself, with the Dow down 665 points shortly after the start of trading, on worries about how much pain U.S. companies would feel because of the tariffs. Some of the sharpest losses hit Big Tech and other companies that could be hurt most by higher interest rates ...

Baltimore, MD - Feb. 3, 2025 - Baltimore’s top financial watchdog has long advocated for ways to change how the city spends its money. Now, he’s emphatic that the city has vested too much power in its mayor. “We’ve had this culture for now almost three generations of the mayor is just an absolute monarch,” City Comptroller Bill Henry told The Baltimore Sun. Henry referred to Baltimore’s Board of Estimates, which handles the city’s fiscal policy. The mayor effectively controls three out of five votes on the board: his own and those of his two appointees — the city solicitor and director of public works. The two other BOE members are the comptroller and City Council president, both elected citywide. While some say there are advantages to a &...

Annapolis, MD - Feb. 2, 2025 - State Delegates Adrian Boafo, of Prince George’s County, and Marlon Amprey, of Baltimore City, called on the Maryland Public Service Commission to “impose an immediate and indefinite moratorium on [utility] rate increases” in a joint news release Friday. The delegates, both Democrats, wrote a letter to the chairman of the commission, Frederick H. Hoover, saying the cost of utilities was untenable for Maryland families. The commission approved a three-year, $408 million rate hike in 2023, yet BGE asked for another $150 million in price increases months later, the letter noted. “The magnitude of these price hikes can only be characterized as highly irregular, if not unprecedented,” the pair wrote, according to the release. &ldquo...

The Qatari Al-Araby Al-Jadeed news outlet corroborates an earlier report from Hamas’s Al-Aqsa TV channel that Jordan is seeking to deport Sbarro pizzeria bomber Ahlam Tamimi. According to the outlet, Jordanian intelligence authorities informed Hamas earlier today that the terror group must either find a country willing to take in Tamimi by the end of the day, or she will be extradited to the United States, where she is wanted by the FBI for the murder of two US civilians in the 2001 Jerusalem pizzeria bombing. Tamimi was sentenced to 16 life sentences by Israel for orchestrating the August 9, 2001, Sbarro pizzeria bombing, but was released in 2011 as part of a deal with Hamas for the release of captive IDF soldier Gilad Shalit. The family of Israeli-American victim Malki Roth has ...
Baltimore, MD - Feb. 2, 2025 - Public health officials are warning that a “quad-demic” — a contagious combination of COVID-19, influenza, RSV and the nasty stomach bug norovirus — is putting pressure on Maryland emergency rooms and hospitals. Several deaths have been caused by the high flu spread, state officials said. Respiratory viruses are at high or very high levels across most of the country, according to the latest surveillance report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The agency said in an update Friday that nationally, wastewater surveillance shows viral activity is high for influenza A and moderate for RSV. COVID-19 levels are low, but coupled with norovirus, offer a quadruple threat. N...
The IDF's Rabbinical Corps has developed, in the course of the past months, in light of the fighting on a number of fronts, a number of revolutionary patents designed to assist the combatants in maintaining their faith, while in combat. One of the significant developments created by the IDF Rabbinate is a Holy Ark for the Torah scroll, which, at the touch of a button, becomes a table for the scroll. "As far as transporting a Torah scroll is concerned, an Ark is required because of the humidity that damages Torah scrolls", relates the Chief of Staff of the IDF Rabbinate, Col. Rabbi Shoham Orkabi. "The ark that is used now is not comfortable to carry and is not waterproof, so the IDF's Rabbinical Corps developed a Torah carrier with straps on both sides. This carrier is very com...
Most of the terrorists released in a November 2023 prisoner swap deal with the Hamas terror group have returned to terror, a senior military source said Sunday afternoon. According to data from Israel's defense echelon, at least two of the terrorists released in November 2023 have been eliminated in the IDF operation in Jenin, and dozens more have been arrested. The source said that around 82% of those released returned to terror. The source also said that thus far, the IDF has scanned 800 structures and destroyed 80 explosives factories. Earlier on Sunday, the IDF announced that the Bislach Brigade began operating on Saturday night in the village of Tammun in eastern Samaria as part of the Wall of Iron counterterrorism operation in the region. The ground operation comes after air...
Chag Tu B’shvat At first glance, Tu B’shvat, the Rosh Hashana for fruit trees,[1] seems to be of mere technical significance — a calendar marker for the yearly mitzvot that pertain to fruits.[2]  Surprisingly, we treat Tu B’shvat as a minor holiday; we skip tachanun[3] and avoid fasting.[4] What are we celebrating? It is also noteworthy that we celebrate only the new year of trees, as opposed to that of other plants or even tree saplings, whose year starts on a different date.[5] Why are trees more significant to us than other vegetation? The answer lies in the special relationship between trees and man in general and the Jewish people in particular. Our Relation to Trees Man Parshat Shoftim describes the relationship between trees and man whe...
Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, has called for a firm stance against Qatar’s ongoing financial and political support of Hamas, warning that the Gulf state cannot continue playing both sides in the ongoing conflict. While Qatar has positioned itself as a diplomatic mediator, it simultaneously provides financial aid and a safe haven for Hamas leadership, fueling tensions and violence in the region. The ambassador emphasized that Israel must send a clear message that this duplicity is unacceptable. He noted that while Qatar has played a role in negotiations, including the recent discussions on hostage releases, it cannot be allowed to fund and sustain the very terror group responsible for attacks on Israeli civilians. Israeli officials are reportedly ur...
In a significant move to uphold international justice, South Africa and Malaysia have initiated a campaign to reinforce the authority of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Criminal Court (ICC). This effort is part of a broader initiative by the nine-nation coalition known as the Hague Group, which includes countries such as Colombia, Bolivia, Chile, Senegal, and Namibia. The campaign aims to ensure compliance with international law and protect vulnerable populations, addressing global issues like the alleged genocide in Gaza and conflicts in Ukraine and the Mediterranean. South Africa has notably filed a genocide case against Israel, asserting that Israel's actions in Gaza constitute violations of international law. The Hague Group's formation undersco...
President Donald Trump has announced sweeping tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China, arguing that the move is necessary to safeguard American interests despite the short-term economic strain it may cause. The new tariffs impose a 25% levy on goods from Canada and Mexico, including a 10% tariff on Canadian energy exports. Additionally, a 10% tariff on Chinese imports has been implemented, aimed at countering unfair trade practices and addressing national security concerns. Trump defended the decision as a strategy to combat illegal drug trafficking and unauthorized immigration, stating that these trade restrictions will encourage new economic policies that prioritize American businesses and workers. However, he acknowledged that the tariffs could lead to higher prices on every...
