Donald Trump selected US Senator Marco Rubio to be his secretary of state, the New York Times reported on Monday, putting the Florida-born politician on track to be the first Latino to serve as America's top diplomat once the Republican president-elect takes office in January. Rubio was arguably the most hawkish option on Trump's shortlist for secretary of state, and he has in years past advocated for a muscular foreign policy with respect to America's geopolitical foes, including China, Iran and Cuba. Over the last several years he has softened some of his stances to align more closely with Trump's views. The president-elect accuses past US presidents of leading America into costly and futile wars and has pushed for a more restrained fore...
A Shabbat of Comfort This past Shabbat in Jerusalem, I joined a gathering that words alone can barely capture. More than 50 bereaved families—bound not by choice but by tragedy—were invited by the "Menucha V'Yeshua" organization to find solace and strength in each other’s company. Among them were mothers, fathers, siblings, and children. I hadn’t known Liz Chalfon, but I met her mother and two of her sisters on Shabbat. Liz and her husband Meir were among those murdered at Kibbutz Chulit on the morning of Simchat Torah, leaving their 8-year-old daughter Adi to survive the horror. The Chalfon story is one of many; each family there carried a narrative, a legacy, and a fragile determination to keep moving forward. Rina Beilin is the mother of Oron who was murd...
President-elect Trump has chosen Rep. Michael Waltz (R-Fla.) to serve as his national security adviser, tapping the former Green Beret to fill a top White House post, multiple sources confirmed to The Hill. Waltz, 50, has served in Congress since 2019. He has called for Europe to do more to support Ukraine and for the U.S. to be more stringent with its support, aligning with a key foreign policy goal of the president-elect. He has also been a staunch critic of the Biden administration’s 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan. The Wall Street Journal first reported on Trump’s choice of Waltz. Waltz had been open about his willingness to serve in the administration and was considered a candidate to lead the Pentagon. The role of national security advise...
Republicans are projected to keep control of the House of Representatives, handing the party total control of Washington with former President Trump back in the White House in January. Decision Desk HQ projected the GOP would hold the House by winning its 218th seat on Monday, the number needed for a majority in the lower chamber. The result is a major win for Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), who skyrocketed up from obscurity to lead the House GOP not only legislatively, but had a large role in its campaign infrastructure. Republicans saved some of their most vulnerable incumbents, like Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) and Rep. David Valadao (R-Calif.), while defeating several vulnerable Democratic incumbents. State Rep. Ryan Mackenzie (R-Pa.) unseated Rep. Susan Wild (D-Pa.), while businessman Rob...

The Shin Bet, Israel's internal security agency, has successfully thwarted a planned assassination attempt against Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and his son, Shoval, who is currently training to be a pilot in the Israeli Air Force. Four Palestinians from the Hebron area, identified as having links to Hamas, were arrested before they could execute their plan.  The investigation revealed that the suspects had meticulously gathered intelligence on Ben Gvir's movements and studied the security measures protecting him. However, some of the Israeli victims of the pogrom have stated that there were police officers who participated in the hours-long attack on Israeli soccer fans, Channel 12 News reported. One such witness, Ariel, said that he got off the train with his friend at the end of the soccer match that evening. They encountered a migrant with a Palestinian flag who shouted at them but they ignored him and reached the main square on the way to their hotel. In the square, thousands of Muslims were waiting for them who shouted at them and cursed them, and after a few minutes, the crowd started running after them and after other fans. At one of the corners...
