Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) is the latest district in Maryland to join a nationwide class action lawsuit against social media companies. The growing list already includes Anne Arundel, Charles, Harford, Howard, Frederick, Montgomery, Prince George's, St. Mary's and Wicomico County Public Schools. They claim social media is a "primary contributor to escalating mental health issues among students." Specifically the lawsuit names Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat and TikTok. Schools argue those platforms "intentionally designed their platforms to target children without providing adequate warnings to users and parents about the potential dangers of social media leading to increased rates of eating disorders, depression, anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts." ...

As we saw in the last piece, Pirkei Avot explains that the world was created for the glory of G-d. Though the whole universe proclaims this notion, man is uniquely able to appreciate and express it. After the failures and challenges of humanity’s first generations, Avraham Avinu emerged as the one who recognized this calling. His recognition is the backdrop to the purpose and unique mission of his descendants — the Jewish people. Our Purpose and Importance The Midrash[1] learns from a pasuk in Sefer Yeshayahu[2] (that appears in the same perek as the pasuk quoted by Avot) that the Jewish people were created in order to sing Hashem's praises.[3] The Midrash takes this further by asserting that the Jewish people themselves embody G-d’s glory and that one of the pu...
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with US President Joe Biden on Sunday in a phone conversation that lasted approximately 45 minutes. According to the White House, the President reaffirmed "our shared goal to see Hamas defeated and to ensure the long-term security of Israel and its people." In addition, the two discussed ongoing efforts to secure the release of all remaining hostages held by Hamas. Biden emphasized the need to capitalize on progress made in the negotiations to secure the release of all hostages as soon as possible. He also called for urgent and specific steps to increase the throughput and consistency of humanitarian assistance to innocent Palestinian civilians and reaffirmed his view that a military operation in Rafah should not proceed without a "credible and ex...
The IDF’s Arabic spokesman, Avichay Adraee, revealed that the IDF had found the laptop of a Gazan journalist in a Hamas base. According to Adraee, the laptop belonged to Muhammad Washah, a journalist for Al Jazeera. It was found several weeks ago in a Hamas base in northern Gaza. The IDF claims that the journalist also served as a senior commander in Hamas’s antitank missile system, and moved to the research and development department of its air force at the end of 2022. Investigation of the laptop revealed photos that connect Muhamed to Hamas' activities. Adraee commented: “Who knows how many other details we’ll soon discover about the presence of other terrorists dressed as journalists.”

Trip Led by Synagogue Initiatives Merges Community Values of Family and Support for Israel Participants of the OU Father-Son Israel Mission pose on the roof of the Hesder Yeshiva of Sderot with a menorah made of rockets fired from Gaza Like many Jewish community members who learned of the October 7 calamity, Binyamin Muschel of Boca Raton, Florida, felt driven to travel to Israel to support its citizens in person, rather than from afar. When a unique OU father-son Israel mission came to his and his wife’s attention, they jumped at the chance for Binyamin to participate with their 15-year-old son Sruli — even though it meant that the family would spend their Yeshiva Week winter vacation apart. “The Father-Son Israel Mission was an opportunity for us to transmit our valu...
British Airways announces that it will resume flights to Israel in April, having suspended them in October citing security fears after the October 7 massacre carried out by Hamas in Israel and the outbreak of the war in Gaza. The airline, which is owned by London-listed aviation conglomerate IAG, says it will “restart our flights on 1 April” to Tel Aviv. The route will operate four times per week but with smaller aircraft than before the outbreak of war, owing to expectations of weaker demand. Many airlines stopped flying to Israel after October 7, but several have since announced their resumption — including Air France, Lufthansa and Ryanair.
President Biden added a layer of scrutiny to U.S. weapons sales to Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan, issuing guidance on how they can be used and linking them to humanitarian assistance.  Under pressure from Senate Democrats critical of the civilian suffering in the Gaza Strip amid Israel’s war against Hamas, the president issued a memorandum Thursday night that outlined the new guidance. It requires the U.S. to receive assurances from those countries that weapons being used in an active conflict comply with international law, and that no efforts are made to obstruct the delivery of humanitarian assistance to civilians in a combat zone. The memorandum mirrors an amendment filed late last year by Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and supported by 18 Sen...
The Hamas government in Gaza has demanded that 1,000 trucks of humanitarian aid be given access to northern Gaza every day until the impact of the war on civilians has been reversed, Arabic-language media reports. The Hamas-run Government Media Office in Gaza claims that this amount of aid is required because “the famine in northern Gaza is worsening” as a result of American and Israeli actions, the reports state. “We immediately demand the entry of 1,000 trucks daily into northern Gaza until it recovers from the famine and its impact,” the report quotes Hamas as saying. There are an estimated 300,000 to 400,000 Palestinians still living in northern Gaza, which the IDF ordered be evacuated at the beginning of the war.
The commander of the IDF's Northern Command, Maj.-Gen. Ori Gordin stated that the IDF is determined to allow evacuated residents to return home safely during a meeting with the heads of local authorities in the North on Friday. He also told them the IDF is preparing to go on the offensive against Hezbollah, saying, "Our goal is to change the security situation in the north in a manner that will allow us to safely return the residents home to a sense of security." The meeting was held at command headquarters and as part of a dialogue with the heads of the local authorities. Additionally, he relayed to them the key points of the situational intelligence and operational assessments, as well as accelerating processes of heightened readiness for the continuation of fighti...
Security has been significantly increased at several Israeli embassies around the world after intelligence authorities uncovered plans to carry out terror attacks, Channel 12 reports. The Israeli embassies in the Netherlands, India and Sweden are among those determined to be at risk for terror attacks and have had their security upgraded accordingly. On January 31, police destroyed an explosive device discovered outside the embassy in Stockholm, in an incident labeled as an “attempted terror attack” by Israel’s ambassador.
